Woolworths cancels The Spectator

Spectatora day ago
The Spectator has thousands of readers in South Africa, many of whom get their weekly magazine from Woolworths, the country's upmarket retailer. Not any longer. Woolworths has taken the bizarre decision to stop selling The Spectator. The apparent trigger? Gareth Roberts's 'End of the rainbow' cover story.
Does Woolworths really think its shoppers can't cope with encountering such an image on their weekly grocery shop?
The issue featuring that article hit newsstands at the end of May, on the eve of Pride month – just as Woolworths launched its own storewide rainbow campaign. It seems that Roberts's piece, in which he argues that Pride's fall can't come soon enough, prompted a review of Woolworths's decision to stock The Spectator. The retailer appears to have decided that stocking the magazine is incompatible with its Pride campaign – and it has removed The Spectator from its shelves.
Roberts, who is gay, wrote that: '2025 is the year the genderist movement finally started to break apart. It has been a mad, wild ride. I'm sure there's more to come, but after many false alarms it feels like a corner has finally been turned. The collapsing of Pride under the weight of its own internal contradictions is a sure sign that the jig is up.'
The piece was accompanied by an illustration featuring the 'intersex-inclusive Pride flag' – a kaleidoscope of rectangles, triangles and even a circle in thirteen different shades – being painted over. Does Woolworths really think its shoppers can't cope with encountering such an image on their weekly grocery shop? If so, it's quite an assumption about the moral values of its customers.
The Spectator asked Woolworths about its recent decision to delist the magazine. It didn't respond. Whatever the reason for the store's decision, it's a shame that some South African readers weren't offered the chance to pick the issue up and learn how iterations of Pride are collapsing under the weight of their contradictions.
For readers in South Africa, The Spectator is still available in Exclusive Books stores nationwide or you can subscribe from as little as R49

EastEnders' Ben Mitchell's 'return imminent' as Callum cheats with unlikely pal

Amongst all the drama with Bernie and Felix's exit in tonight's EastEnders, fans were left in shock when Johnny and Callum shared a passionate kiss - despite his marriage to Ben In tonight's EastEnders, Felix Baker was left in tears after spotting his boyfriend Johnny Carter share a kiss with Callum Highway, despite him still being married to Ben Mitchell. During Pride celebrations in The Albert, Johnny was seen apologising to Callum after berating him for putting his life on hold while Ben serves time in prison in America. ‌ "You are a young, hot man with a life, a job, a future. When is your life going to be about you?" Johnny questioned before the two shared a passionate kiss. ‌ A devastated Felix decided to pack his bags and leave, and although Callum is still married to Ben, spoilers for next week confirm things will go one step further between the pair, as they're set to spend the night together. It's been rumoured that Max Bowden will be reprising his role as Ben Mitchell, and now fans think is return is sooner than we think. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one fan penned: "I bet this will be a actual affair between Callum and Johnny and it's funny they have Callum hooking up with someone when Ben is about to come back." Another Ballum fan penned: "I know I'm late to the conversation but I only have this to say regarding Johnny/Callum - it's unfortunate but irrelevant. Ben is coming back so drama was inevitable. I'm not worried." Earlier this year, it was reported that Max Bowden, who played Ben Mitchell, would be back for a brief stint in the show later this year, with a possibility of it becoming full-time. However, this has not yet been confirmed by bosses. ‌ A source told the Sun of the reported return: 'Ben [Wadey] had a list of characters he wanted to bring back, and Ben Mitchell was one. It's taken a little while to sort out, but Max will be back filming on Albert Square later this year.' 'Ben wanted to meet Max and see where his head was at," the source continued, revealing that the new boss went to see the actor in the musical Midnight Cowboy. ‌ 'Things hadn't ended particularly well, and Ben wanted to assure him this could be his fresh start," the source continued. They then revealed that Max had "agreed to come back for a short stint" after Ben pitched a comeback storyline for the character. Ben was last seen on screens in 2023 after being arrested for an international crime. He's currently in prison in America but the character is mentioned regularly by his father Phil and husband Callum. Will we be seeing his return in the near future?

EastEnders fans fume as 'underused' characters axed from soap after eight years

It was an emotional night in EastEnders tonight as Bernie Taylor and Felix Baker said goodbye to Albert Square following announcement of their departures earlier this year EastEnders fans were left in tears during tonight's episode, as cousins Bernie Taylor and Felix Baker said goodbye to Walford. However, fans were left disappointed that the two had been "underused" as characters prior to their exit announcements, despite being big characters when they first joined. ‌ Bernie, who arrived in 2017, was part of a hard-hitting surrogate storyline where she suffered a tragic miscarriage. She also played a huge part in the The Six storyline during Christmas 2023. ‌ Felix was brought in as the soap's first show's first regular drag queen character in 2022, although fans hadn't seen much of him, or Tara before the lead up to his exit. Tonight, fans were left fearing for Bernie, after it was revealed she had been stealing from the Panesars business accounts - but luckily, she managed to escape for Spain before Ravi got to her. Although Felix initially planned to stay in Walford with his boyfriend Johnny, he was left heartbroken when he caught him kissing Callum in the Albert. He then confronted him about Keanu Taylor's murder, in which he admitted he knew his mum Linda was the one to end Keanu's life. It all got too much for Felix, as he ran to join Bernie in the taxi dressed as drag queen alter-ego Tara Misu. "Tara's too big for this town," he said. Bernie's departure also signalled a seeming end for EastEnders ' The Six storyline, as Suki asked her to give the money she had stolen from her family back before leaving. However, Kathy, Denise and Linda persuaded Suki to let her go, after they were involved in the death of her brother Keanu. "And you have got it all. Everything that you ever wanted. You can be who you are with the woman that you love. This money is a drop in the ocean to get away with what you did, to move on, to finally let me, my mum, my family, to be finally free of this," Bernie could be heard telling Suki and The Six. ‌ Bernie and Felix then headed off in a taxi in the midst of the Pride celebrations as the tune Proud played in the background. Ravi was seen attempting to run after the taxi - but it seemed like he was too late. However, fans were left disappointed that it was Ravi who got the 'duff duff' not Bernie and Felix. After the episode aired, fans took to X, formerly known as Twitter to express their sadness over Felix and Bernie's departure. "A beautiful episode and exit for Bernie. A real force of nature who'll be missed so much. I wish she was given a better exit storyline and I really wanted Bernie to have another relationship. I miss the Taylor family," wrote one. ‌ Another wrote: "Phenomenal performances from @clair_norris + @matt_james_morr this wk - am so sad this is how it all ended for the Taylor-Bakers, such a brilliant family + such a waste to lose them all - but they've both been amazing to the end + should be so proud of themselves," as a third dissapointed fan penned: "It's a bit disappointing that Bernie and Felix didn't get the duff duff for their final episode." "Bernie and Felix were absolutely brilliant today - they've been so underused really, but I'm glad Clair and Matthew got time to really shine this week," said a fourth. Clair took to social media to address her exit today, as she wrote: "My last ep airs tonight, and with that comes a flood of memories. ‌ " EastEnders was my first audition, and my first job. Having come from college & having no experience in this industry, Julia, Wayne & Sean all took a chance on me to play Bernadette Taylor & for that, I can't be thankful enough. 8 years later and honestly this job, has changed my life. "It's true what they all said at the beginning, Eastenders is one big family & I'm so lucky to have met and worked with some amazing people," she continued. "I will always have an attachment to Bernie, she represents so many girls out there who wear their heart of their sleeves and don't quite fit in…no offence to anyone who wear purple coats. …I have adored playing her and she will forever hold a special place in my heart. This has been the best first role ever!"

EastEnders' Ravi Gulati's next victim 'sealed' - and it's not who you think

EastEnders fans think they've worked out who Ravi Gulati's next victim is after tonight's dramatic episode, saw Bernie get away with his money as she left the Square for good It was a dramatic night in EastEnders tonight as Bernie Taylor (Clair Norris) and Felix Baker (Matthew James Morrison) said goodbye to Albert Square for good. Bernie's lucky escape came just before Ravi found out she'd been stealing from his business - but it was Suki Panesar who let her leave for Spain. ‌ Throughout the week, Bernie has been trying to convince the Panesars it was Vicki stealing from their accounts, not her. However, at the end of tonight's episode, Vinny's spyware revealed that Bernie was the thief after all, with a livid Ravi out to get her. ‌ However, he was too late as he was seen chasing after her taxi and screaming her name as she left with cousin Felix. It was Suki who let Bernie go with the money, and her secret of The Six's involvement in her brother Keanu Taylor's murder. Although Ravi is oblivious to what really happened with Keanu, earlier in the episode, we saw him ask Suki what Bernie had over her. As Bernie and Felix made their getaway, Ravi was seen looking over at Suki during the Pride festivities, as it was obvious she had seen her leave. Bernie may have escaped the danger of Ravi - fans don't think Suki will be so lucky, as they fear he'll turn on his own family. It wouldn't be surprising, as viewers, and Albert Square know how ruthless Ravi can be. In tonight's episode, he was seen locking Joel in the Walford East freezer, in an attempt to get a confession out of Vicki. And that's without him finding out Joel had secretly recorded himself sleeping with Ravi's daughter Avani... ‌ Taking to Reddit after watching the eventful episode, and witnessing Ravi's 'death stare' towards Suki at the end, one fan penned: "Ravi will come after Suki now." Another agreed: "I see a potential splitting/ feud between the Panesars when Ravi inevitably finds out that Suki gave away the money. That was so good. It was a sweet ending, especially for Suki and Bernie." Spoilers for next week reveal even more trouble for the Panesars as they scramble to try and save the business. With Bernie's theft, a desperate Ravi goes to Nicola to get a drug contact, but of course, things end up going south. It's the week of Avani's 16th birthday - but will Ravi be able to give her the celebration she deserves? And how will the family recover from the crisis? EastEnders airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
