Prep talk: Math & College Science Prep is competing for a state title
Math & Science College Prep, which is located on the former grounds of Frederick Douglass elementary school in Los Angeles, plays Diamond Ranch on Tuesday in the Southern California Division V regional final. The winner advances to Sacramento.
Coach Christopher White is 27 years old and a former St. Monica assistant who played at Lawndale and for Tim Floyd at Texas El Paso . The team is 25-7 and won the City Section Division III championship. The Sharks start four guards _ Bryan Ruiz, Adan Martinez, Sidney Scott and Sterling Keyser.
School enrollment is close to 550, and academics is big. One of White's players, Aldo Rojo, was born in Mexico and takes five Advanced Placement classes with Spanish as his primary language. Last year White had a player with a 4.8 grade-point average.
The Sharks were the No. 7 seed, with Diamond Ranch the No. 5 seed. The winner will play in the state Division V final on Friday at noon at Golden 1 Center. ...

White's first homer of the afternoon gave Atlanta a 3-1 lead in the second inning at the historic racetrack. The ball hit the safer barrier after clearing the outfield wall and the track itself. He added his sixth homer of the season on a leadoff shot in the seventh. Cincinnati went 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position and left 12 on base. Brent Suter (1-2) got the loss. Atlanta came in having clinched the season series, winning four of the first six games. The teams split the first two in Cincinnati before coming to Bristol. The game was scheduled for Saturday, but it was suspended in the first inning because of persistent rain. Hurston Waldrep (1-0) was on the mound for Atlanta when play resumed. The right-hander was brought up from Triple-A Gwinnett and traveled about 250 miles to Bristol Motor Speedway early Sunday morning. He pitched 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball for his first career win. The Braves will begin a series against the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday, with RHP Erick Fedde (3-11, 5.33 ERA) taking the bump for Game 1. Celtics point guard Derrick White hosts annual basketball camp in Colorado
Boston Celtics point guard Derrick White hosted his annual basketball camp in conjunction with Hillside Connection, a group founded by Terrell Brown that was created to promote the sport in Colorado Springs, this past Saturday (Aug. 2). The Celtics floor general took some time out of his offseason schedule to host nearly 100 youths at the camp at Sierra High School, per the Gazette's Marcus Hill. White leaned into NBA defense and the principles he conducts himself with while playing it to a rapt audience, but the Colorado native isn't just there to teach another generation of prospective players how to elevate their individual games at this stage of their engagement with the sport. "Coming back to the Springs where it all started for me is special," said the Celtics floor general. "Camps like this are a great way to play basketball and have fun or meet a new friend. You might learn a new technique you can take home and show your friends. " "It's a great way to get out here and meet new people and have fun while doing it," suggested White. "I'm from Colorado, and they can see a kid from Colorado made it and say, 'Why not me?'," asked the University of Colorado - Boulder alum rhetorically. "I saw Chauncey (Billups) do it and I know it's possible. Hopefully one of these kids sees me and what I've managed to accomplish, and they'll think it's possible to reach their dreams, whatever that might be."
