Marvel Hits Pause on "Nova," "Strange Academy," & "Terror, Inc." TV Series

Marvel Television has paused development on three projects: "Nova," "Strange Academy", and "Terror, Inc."
Sources said that these projects were never officially greenlit, and may still come to fruition at some point. The studio has simply shifted its priorities at the moment.
The decision is also reflective of a new model for producing television that's emerged at Marvel in recent years.
Marvel initially approached series development in much the same way it handled features: a slate was announced, and what was teased was more or less what got made.
A couple of years ago, senior leadership decided to retool the development process, as they were also revamping their new Daredevil series, Born Again.
Marvel's new approach to TV development is more traditional, with many more projects being developed than will ultimately be made, and showrunners being brought in to oversee each. Shifting to a more typical greenlight process made sense, as the studio looked to maintain audience engagement amid new realities facing the industry.
In addition to the prospect of superhero fatigue and content oversaturation, there was the reality of a market contraction, which led the studio to pull back significantly on the amount of projects released each year.
Marvel has spoken publicly about the overhaul of its development strategy, as in a Screen Rant interview published last August with Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios' Head of TV, Streaming, and Animation.
'We're developing more than we make now, so we're actually have a few different things brewing that we might see through to at least a pilot script to see if we want to make it,' said Winderbaum. 'But, there's a lot of opportunity out there, it's hard to choose favorites… We're really being careful about what we choose to do next.'
Originally, Marvel turned to Sabir Pirzada to pen an adaptation of "Nova", as we revealed in 2022. Boasting multiple aliases — the original and most famous being Richard Rider — Nova is a character created by Marv Wolfman and John Romita Sr., a cosmic-powered hero and last survivor of the intergalactic military and police force known as the Nova Corps, who wields the Nova Force to protect the universe.
The character first appeared in Nova #1 in 1976. Marvel was active on the project as recently as this past December, announcing then that Criminal Minds alum Ed Bernero had been hired as the writer and showrunner for the series, replacing Pirzada.
If Nova was the most concrete of the three projects put on pause, "Strange Academy", and "Terror, Inc." were also rumored for some time to be in development as a series for Disney+.
"Strange Academy" would have been an adaptation of the eponymous comic book series, created by Skottie Young and artist Humberto Ramos, which debuted in March 2020.
Set in New Orleans, it centers on a school founded by Doctor Strange to educate young individuals with magical abilities.
The show was expected to focus on Wong, portrayed by Benedict Wong, and his leadership of the school. Amy Rardin, who wrote on Echo, was working on the show.
Launched in 1992, the comic book series "Terror, Inc." centers on an antihero by the name of Terror, who possesses the ability to incorporate the body parts of others into his form, gaining their memories and abilities.
Created by Dan Chichester, Margaret Clark, and Klaus Janson, the character first appeared under the name Shreck in St. George #2 in August 1988 before being reintroduced as Terror in the 1992 series. No word on who was involved with development.
Up next for Marvel Television is "Daredevil: Born Again" on March 4.
Elsewhere, live-action series coming up for release this year include "Ironheart", on June 24, and "Wonder Man", which is expected to debut this December.
On the film side, the studio launched "Captain America: Brave New World" on Valentine's Day and has so far seen the film pull in over $204M globally. "Thunderbolts" is next up on May 2, with "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" following on July 25.

Jeremy Renner Addresses MCU Return, "Hawkeye" Season 2

Yara Sameh Jeremy Renner is ready to return to the MCU. In a recent interview with Empire , Renner said he's ready to reprise his role of the bow-wielding Avenger, Hawkeye. He added that he's open to whatever Marvel has planned, whether that be a second season of the 'Hawkeye' Disney+ series or an MCU blockbuster. 'I'm always happy to be in that world, man. I love all those guys, I love the character,' Renner said. 'I'm sure we'll end up doing Season 2 [of 'Hawkeye'], and do other things. And I'm happy to do it. My body's getting ready for something like that. I don't know if anybody wants to see me in tights, but my body will look good in the tights.' He added that he's recovered 'more than 150%' from his near-fatal snowplow accident in 2023, and is ready for the stunt work required for a Marvel vehicle. 'Having health and wellness be such a central part of my life, that's what's gotten me back,' Renner explained. 'And even as I age, I just feel stronger than I've been. I have some issues, and tendon issues and certain limitations of flexibility and mobility, but I spent a lot of time on getting better and stronger, and I wouldn't if I didn't get crushed.' This isn't the first time Renner spoke out about his potential MCU comeback. In May, 'The Hurt Locker' star said Marvel asked him to come back for 'Hawkeye' Season 2, but offered him 'half' of his salary from the first season. Renner speculated that his incident, which left him with eight ribs broken in 14 places, a broken right knee and ankle, a broken left leg tibia and ankle and a broken right clavicle and shoulder, had something to do with the reduced offer. He said at the time, 'I'm like, 'I'm sorry? Why? Did you think I'm only half the Jeremy because I got ran over? Maybe that's why you want to pay me half of what I made on the first season.'' read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

"Buffy" Reboot Adds Kingston Vernes to Cast

Yara Sameh Kingston Vernes (The Survivor) has been cast in the highly anticipated Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, which has a pilot order at Hulu. He will be a guest star in the pilot, with the character envisioned as a major recurring if the project goes to series. Ryan Kiera Armstrong stars as the new slayer — an introverted high-school student named Nova — in the untitled Buffyverse offshoot, which Sarah Michelle Gellar executive produces in addition to reprising her iconic role as Buffy Summers. Vernes will play Carson, a Junior Olympian and popular student at New Sunnydale Academy who is the object of Nova's (Armstrong) crush and starts noticing her after a life-changing event. In addition to Armstrong and Gellar, Vernes joins previously cast series regulars Faly Rakotohavana, Ava Jean, Sarah Bock, Daniel Di Tomasso, and Jack Cutmore-Scott. Oscar winner Chloé Zhao is directing the pilot, written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman. No additional information has been provided about the project, referred to as the next chapter in the Buffyverse, which comes from 20th Television and Searchlight TV. In a promising sign, a writers room is opening to work on additional scripts, with a March start eyed if the pilot is picked up to series. Vernes was most recently seen in HBO Films' "The Survivor", directed by Barry Levinson and starring Danny DeVito, Ben Foster, and Peter Sarsgaard. He previously played young Mank in David Fincher's Netflix film "Mank" and also appeared in Paul Schoulberg's "So Cold the River". read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

Marvel's Future Plans: "Black Panther 3" and a New "X-Men" Cast to ‘Keep the Cost Down'; "Blade" and "Deadpool 4" Are Less Priorities

Yara Sameh Could have been worse, but could have been better — that's the collective takeaway on Marvel Studios' latest venture, 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps,' that has pulled in $218 million globally following its July 25 bow. But as with 'Superman' two weeks prior, the superhero movie's overseas haul — $100 million, including an anemic $4.5 million from China — offers a stark reminder of how much things have changed since pre-coronavirus days and where the tripwires lie for the Disney-owned studio, which has ambitious plans for two 'Avengers' movies in 2026 and 2027, followed by an 'X-Men' reboot further out on the horizon. By contrast, 'Avengers: Endgame' nabbed $614 million from the Middle Kingdom alone in 2019. 'There's a reset of what a hit is, and I don't see them consistently hitting $1 billion as before — without China, with Disney+ exposure, post-COVID, without megastars,' says one top agent who represents several clients in the Marvel universe. 'China used Marvel, Disney and the U.S. film industry to seed their own.' Adds an insider of the lost China windfall: 'We are never going to have those days again.' That reality has changed the calculus at Marvel, led by Kevin Feige, when it comes to making a movie like 'X-Men.' 'Thunderbolts' helmer Jake Schreier is set to direct the tentpole, with the studio fine-tuning Michael Lesslie's script. Casting will begin soon, and the field is wide open. But Marvel is looking for younger talent, rather than A-listers, to 'keep the cost down,' says another agent. Feige also indicated he is looking to focus on the next-gen aspects of 'X-Men' during a recent conversation with the press. Marvel is holding July 23, 2027, on the release calendar for an unnamed film, but sources say it won't be filled by 'X-Men.' While Matt Shakman's 'Fantastic Four' features a bona fide TV star in Pedro Pascal, who has made his mark on the small screen in everything from 'The Mandalorian' to 'The Last of Us,' he hasn't yet scaled the same big-screen heights as the 'Endgame' ensemble. And that helped keep the 'Fantastic Four' budget manageable. Disney hasn't given a precise figure on the film's budget, only pegging it at somewhere north of $200 million. 'Avengers: Doomsday' will feature at least one mega-payday for Robert Downey Jr., who is returning to the Marvel fold as villain Doctor Doom. Sources say Downey Jr. has earned between $500 million and $600 million throughout seven Marvel movies and three cameos and won't be working at a discount on 'Doomsday'; neither will Chris Hemsworth, who's returning as Thor. As for who will be the star of the film, sources say Pascal is not the centerpiece, but does have an integral role. Regardless, the tentpole is on schedule to open December 18, 2026. Wall Street is keeping close tabs on Marvel as elements of its expanded portfolio fall into place, including the integration of 20th Century Fox assets like 'Fantastic Four,' 'X-Men' and last year's runaway hit 'Deadpool & Wolverine,' which earned $1.34 billion worldwide. 'Marvel is a critical piece to Disney's overall premium IP. And the stronger Marvel is, the better it is for the overall company,' says Wall Street analyst Robert Fishman at MoffettNathanson. 'The recent studio momentum has allowed Disney to help drive subscriber growth at Disney+ and see the overall Disney flywheel start to accelerate again.' There won't be much to analyze for the next year. The next Marvel movie to hit theaters is 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' on July 31, followed by 'Doomsday' in December and 'Avengers: Secret Wars' in December 2027. Amid an industrywide pullback on superheroes, the Marvel brain trust is feeling no sense of urgency on the long-gestating 'Blade' reboot or even a new 'Deadpool' outing, sources say. However, ideas are percolating on a Ryan Coogler-helmed 'Black Panther 3,' creating excitement internally. Ultimately, Marvel is thrilled that it has brought 'Fantastic Four' — a tricky property that proved vexing in the past — back from the grave: Fans have embraced the effort, giving the film an A- CinemaScore. The two previous incarnations found a tepid response from audiences, with diminishing returns. Tim Story's 2005 version earned $334 million, while the drama-plagued 2015 version took home $168 million amid a public bashing from director Josh Trank, who complained of studio interference from Fox. (Actor Toby Kebbell corroborated Trank's version of events.) This time around, the only minor blip came via a behind-the-scenes battle over screenwriting credits, with the WGA stepping in to make a determination. The union awarded final screenwriting credit to Josh Friedman, Eric Pearson, Jeff Kaplan, Ian Springer and Kat Wood. For superhero watchers, good is the new great, as the genre finds its footing after a cold streak that included recent Marvel misfires — 'Thunderbolts' and 'The Marvels' — as well as a batch of duds from DC that predated the James Gunn-Peter Safran regime. Says analyst Shawn Robbins of Box Office Theory: 'I think as an industry we've become very obsessed with opening-weekend results, in particular with both ['Superman' and 'Fantastic Four']. Because word of mouth is so strong for both, I think the story is not fully obvious yet. Yes, 'Fantastic Four' is good enough in terms of it exceeded what Disney expected. So that's a positive. And it's tough to compare it to any other Marvel films because we simply live in a different time now for the superhero releases.' read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results
