Couldn't preorder a Switch 2? No worries, Playdate has big news coming this week
While everyone's scrambling after Switch 2 preorders, Panic's beautiful little Playdate console could be a fun low-fi alternative – and new games are coming!
The company says it's sold 70,000 devices since the Playdate console was launched, along with almost 290,000 game units. On Thursday (17 April), it will announce Playdate Season 2, a second series of games for the minimalist device.
We can expect to learn pre-order information, price and the release date for the first week of Season Two games (also see our pick of the best retro game consoles).
Designed by the app developer and video game publisher Panic in collaboration with Teenage Engineering, Playdate is a very unique-looking handheld games console.
Sure, it doesn't have the graphics or interactivity of the Switch 2, or Joy-Cons that work as mice. But it's bright yellow, fits in your pocket and it has a beautiful black and white screen. And it has a crank: a unique flip-out rotating analogue controller.
This week's showcase airs one day from the third year anniversary of Playdate's original launch and two years since the launch of Playdate's online store for games, Catalog. Since then, Panic says it's raised over $1m for developers.
Indie devs working with Panic have been enthusiastic about the model. 'Making games for Playdate has been an incredible experience — it's taken me places (both digital and physical!) that I honestly never thought I'd reach,' says Rae, Playdate game developer of Rowbot Rally.
'This community is super helpful and always willing to share tips and resources freely so any game turns out the best it can be, and I've received so much support from them not just in problem-solving but also sheer hype.
"With the Playdate SDK, it's super easy to iterate on an idea and turn it into a fun game; and the amount of players willing to take a chance on even a small silly game in Catalog is incredible. In fact, earnings from my Playdate titles have very directly resulted in me buying my first car! [insert the funniest car horn noise here] Big thanks to Panic, and the rest of the Playdate community (I know you're reading this!), for all you do.'
"Developing Playdate games has been such a perfect starting point for me as a first time game dev!' says ToadleyUnderControl, Playdate game developer of Reel-Istic Fishing.' Playdate is available to order for $229 and refurbished units are also now available at shop.play.date for $179. The Playdate Update showcase will air on April 17 at 10am PT/ 1pm ET / 6pm UK time.

Nintendo (NTDOF) is in hot water with regulators and fans over issues with the Switch 2. However, regulators argue that the clause in its terms and agreements is unlawful, removing a product and service paid for by the consumer. The complaint requests that Nintendo remove the feature. Nintendo has 20 days to provide a legal response to this complaint. The Switch 2 brick issue came after some owners complained about it. That includes one case of a console sold at Walmart (WMT) being bricked, as well as secondhand customers getting bricked consoles from private sellers. Nintendo Switch 2 Overheat Complaints The next problem Nintendo faces is complaints of the Switch 2 overheating. Several gamers have highlighted the issue on social media, noting it can happen during play of both highly detailed and less strenuous games. According to some of these posts, the issue is tied to the dock, which can't keep the Switch 2 cool enough during gameplay. Nintendo's official solution is to ensure proper airflow, but that might not be enough in some cases. Even with these issues, NTDOF stock was up 0.14% as of Wednesday afternoon. The stock has also rallied 58.21% year-to-date and 65.59% over the past 12 months. Is Nintendo Stock a Buy, Sell, or Hold? Turning to Wall Street, the analysts' consensus rating for Nintendo is Moderate Buy, based on eight Buy, two Hold, and a single Sell rating over the past three months. With that comes an average NTDOF stock price target of $93.76, representing a potential 1.77% upside for the shares.

Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Issues? It Might Just Be Your HDMI Cable
As the Switch 2 continues to sell in the millions for Nintendo, it shouldn't be a surprise that there'd be some issues with the console. It appears, however, that one problem Switch 2 owners are facing is actually just a matter of using the wrong cable. Reddit users have posted about their Joy-Cons disconnecting when they're playing on their Switch 2 while it's docked, an issue spotted earlier by IGN. It does appear that, luckily, the issue can be resolved by using the included HDMI cable for the Switch 2 rather than an older, slower one -- including the cable that came with the original Nintendo Switch. Nintendo laid out the solution on its support page for when the Joy-Con 2 starts disconnecting from the console: Confirm that you're using an "Ultra High Speed" HDMI cable to connect the dock to the TV. If it's not Ultra High Speed, your console won't perform as expected when docked. If you're using a different cable than the one that came with the console, it should have printed on the cable that it's "Ultra High Speed." The HDMI cable that came with the Nintendo Switch is not "Ultra High Speed" and should not be used with the Nintendo Switch 2 dock. Nintendo didn't immediately respond to a request for comment about the source of this issue. Since the Switch 2 launch, many gamers have come to realize that Nintendo's new console is very picky about what cables are connected to it. This goes for the HDMI cable as well as the power cable. While the new and old Switch share the same name, they don't share the same components. The Switch 2 is a huge upgrade in graphics power over the 2017 console, which means it needs the appropriate power supply. Not providing the Switch 2 with sufficient power could likely cause some issues, especially if the system has to do a lot of work to run a game.

Whether you're a fan of the Legend of Zelda franchise or are simply looking for a thrilling open-world game to sink your teeth into on your fancy new Switch 2, you can rest assured that 2023's Tears of the Kingdom can provide a hell of a good time. This is a dense, lengthy title that can keep you busy for weeks or longer. But if you like to plan ahead or are just curious about just how long it takes to beat Link's massive second Nintendo Switch outing, let's take a look. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is an enormous adventure that begs players to devote a lot of time to uncovering all of its incredible mysteries. But with a game so expansive, it's hard to say exactly how long it'll take you to do so. Due to the open-ended nature of the experience, each playthrough will be unique, after all. That being said, the average playthrough of just The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom's campaign will take the average player around 50 hours. This would be ignoring a lot of optional content, however, therefore skipping some of the game's best moments. A playthrough of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom focused on completing all of the shrines, side-quests, and so forth can run upwards of 100 hours, especially if you're taking your time and checking out all the sights or spending countless hours creating all sorts of weird contraptions and vehicles with Link's Ultrahand ability. This is probably the best way for the general completionist to experience the game, as it allows you to see most of the important content without becoming exhausting. But true completionists who can stomach the process of tracking down all one thousand korok seeds, collecting every item and armor piece, and clearing every single spot on the map, can look to spend in the vicinity of 200-250 hours with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
