Fix accountability, identify traitors: JMM to Centre

Ruling JMM on Thursday claimed that the
Pahalgam terror attack
was not "just a coincidence but an experiment by some traitors", calling for an impartial high-level probe. The party further said the entire nation is with the govt and it must take concrete steps against the attack.
The central general secretary of the party, Supriyo Bhattacharya, said "some traitors" were active behind the scenes and trying to divert public attention whenever the country faced any sensitive issue or there was a visit from some international leaders.
"We saw this during the Pulwama attack of 2019 when out of a large number of buses carrying soldiers, one was non-bulletproof and the RDX-laden jeep collided with it selectively, resulting in the death of 40 soldiers. Such a targeted attack was not possible without inside information, but we failed to identify the conspirator yet," he said.
Drawing parallels between the Pulwama and the Pahalgam attacks, Bhattacharya said the attack happened when the country was facing various contentious and sensitive issues, and soon after the incident, correlated propaganda started.
"Even when there is a small political protest, police deployment is there, but in Pahalgam, where it is the peak tourist season with thousands of tourists arriving every day, there was no security apparatus in place. What makes the situation more suspicious is that our home minister Amit Shah visited the area merely 10 days ago on a three-day visit to review the security arrangements, and still, such a heinous incident happened," he argued.
Posing questions to the home ministry, he asked why no one was arrested even after 48 hours of the incident when the country has such a huge internal security budget.
"A handful of people, whose sketches have been issued by the govt, come and go easily after carrying out the massacre without being intercepted. How can this be explained?" he further said, stressing that putting the Indus Waters Treaty on hold was not a solution and the govt must come forward with concrete steps as the entire nation is standing with the govt.
"Kashmir is our crown and the people there are among the best hosts. Be it Amarnath pilgrims or tourists visiting Dal Lake, it is the Muslim residents who operate their mules and boats to assist the pilgrims. Our enemy nation wants to target that communal harmony," he pointed out, criticising an Army general and an MP without taking their names for issuing communal statements and trying to divide society on religious lines.
Bhattacharya also argued, "Unless the Pulwama terror attack probe is completed, we cannot expect a thorough and genuine probe into this attack as well. No one knows where that DSP vanished who was suspected to be the black sheep during the Pulwama attack. Even this time, someone must have facilitated the entry and exit of the terrorists."
JMM also asserted that holding the Amarnath Yatra successfully would now be a challenge for the people of Kashmir and the entire nation. "The govt must ensure adequate security measures so that the annual pilgrimage proceeds smoothly," Bhattacharya added.

‘Some BJP MPs backing our Waqf stand': Top Muslim body chief on eve of Patna rally

After holding scores of protest meetings against the amended Waqf law across Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal, Imarat-e-Shariah, one of the country's leading Muslim organisations, is set to hold a mega rally in Patna's Gandhi Maidan on Sunday to keep the heat on the BJP-led Centre over the row. Imarat-e-Shariah, headquartered in Patna, has rejected the Waqf amendment legislation, calling for its withdrawal. The legislation was passed by Parliament in April. In May, after hearing multiple petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Waqf Amendment Act, 2025, the Supreme Court reserved its decision on the prayer for interim directions. Speaking to The Indian Express, Imarat-e-Shariah head Faisal Rahmani said: 'Though we have been protesting against the draconian Waqf Amendment Bill right from the start, we want to keep the pressure on the Centre. We have been creating awareness among public about how the Centre's Waqf amendments are against several provisions of the Constitution and Supreme Court rulings. It is nothing but a bid to take away our places of worship and heritage buildings. This law undermines the spirit of brotherhood in the country.' Rahmani said: 'We accept the 1995 Waqf law. Going by the amendments to it, how can one disallow Hindus to donate their land for a good cause? Our records show that there are thousands of educational, medical and social organisations and institutions being run on Waqf land, some of which even have more Hindu beneficiaries in comparison to Muslims. Take for example Maulana Mazharul Haque University in Patna, which has 88% Hindu students in courses.' He said, 'The Centre summarily rejected our more than 300 representations against the Waqf Bill – we are also rejecting their amended Waqf law.' Calling the Waqf law 'irrational', the Imarat-e-Shariah chief also said: 'What will happen when someone asks for proof of Ashokan pillars or a whole lot of our historical monuments cutting across religions? This law aims at creating enmity among citizens… Public is a great force. It had made the NDA-led central government withdraw three farm laws. Patna rally is just the beginning, we will keep the pressure on the Centre.' Asked about timing of the Imarat-e-Shariah's protests ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly polls, Rahmani said they have been seeking support from all parties. 'We are getting calls of solidarity from various political parties. In fact, some BJP MPs have also been supporting our Waqf stand,' he claimed. The Muslim community accounts for over 17% of Bihar's population. Santosh Singh is a Senior Assistant Editor with The Indian Express since June 2008. Former SIMI activist from Padgha Saqib Nachan dies in Delhi hosp

Mumbai: Sixty-three-year-old former SIMI activist Saqib Nachan, who was arrested by NIA in the ISIS Maharashtra module case, died on Saturday morning while receiving treatment at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. He was under treatment for six days following a brain haemorrhage. Nachan, convicted twice earlier in terror cases, was arrested in Dec 2023 for allegedly running ISIS modules in Delhi and Maharashtra's Padgha village. Following Saqib's demise, authorities deployed over 200 police personnel in and around Padgha as a security measure. After his release on completion of sentence in 2017, in 2023 he had come under the NIA's scanner once again as the agencies started their crackdown in the 'Delhi-Padgha ISIS terror module' case. According to the NIA, Nachan and his associates were being instructed by foreign handlers and were involved in terrorist activities, including the fabrication of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) aimed at furthering ISIS' agenda. The module declared Padgha village as a "liberated zone" to motivate vulnerable Muslim youths to relocate to the village, the investigation showed. In 2023, NIA arrested Nachan and his son Shamil, along with some others, in the ISIS module case. In November 2017, Saqib Nachan was released from the Thane jail after completing his 10-year jail term. Nachan was released five months before the actual term. The period was given to him as remission for his good behaviour. Nachan had then surrendered in the 2002 Mumbai Central, 2003 Vile Parle and 2003 Mulund train blast cases. While 14 people were killed, over a hundred were left injured in these three blasts. All the cases were clubbed together and tried under the now-defunct Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA). Termed as the mastermind by the prosecution, the court found him guilty of illegally possessing an AK-56 rifle and sentenced him to 10 years in jail in 2006. Nachan's two sons are Shamil, currently imprisoned in the ISIS module case, and Aaqib (elder son), who was recently questioned and released by NIA. Nachan's first arrest came in 1992 under the now-repealed TADA Act, in connection with Operation K2, a shadowy alleged plot backed by ISI to ignite Khalistani and Islamic insurgencies in India. He was convicted alongside Khalistani militant Lal Singh and sentenced to life, but the Supreme Court later commuted his sentence to 10 years. He walked free in 2001.
