The First of its Kind Collaboration with Imperial College London in the Region - Economy
Ushering through a strategic partnership to drive global sustainability solutions, Mentors Gate Development, a leading consultancy group working on SME and innovative entrepreneurship development across Africa and the Middle East, have joined hands with Imperial College London (ICL), ranked 1st in the UK and Europe; 2nd in the world in QS World University Rankings 2025, to officially launch a groundbreaking Industrial Wastewater Treatment Program, powered by ICL's WICKED Acceleration Labs, marking a critical step in advancing Egypt's environmental, industrial and economic goals.
The initiative, unveiled during a high-level event in Cairo, aims to accelerate innovative, scalable solutions for industrial water treatment, aligning with Egypt's Vision 2030, UN Sustainable Development Goals, as well as the ongoing efforts for increased partnerships with the UK and EU countries towards creating viable opportunities for economic development in Egypt and the region.
At the heart of this program is a commitment to driving real-world, sustainable impact. Industrial wastewater treatment has emerged as a global and national priority, with challenges pertaining to cost, infrastructure, regulations. The initiative targets not only technical innovation but also practical deployment, ecosystem engagement, and investment readiness.
The launch event brought together a distinguished group of speakers on top of whom was Cristobal Garcia, Co-Founder of Wicked Acceleration Labs, Bassel Rahmy, MSMEDA Executive Director, Ambassador Magdy Amer, Former Egyptian Ambassador to China, FAO Communications Expert Rawya El Dabi, and ILO Project Manager Martin Ostenmeier. Respected guests included representatives of the UK Embassy in Egypt, the EU, as well as representatives from the Federation of Egyptian Industries (FEI), government entities, research institutions, and private sector leaders. Some of Mentors' Gates strategic partners have also joined the launch, most notably Orange Digital Center and Track 3 Consulting.
Key highlights of the multi-day launch-visit included site tours in Alexandria's industrial zones, discussions at the City of Scientific Research and Technological Applications, and workshops that fostered dialogue between major players in Egypt's innovation ecosystem and lab representatives.

Meanwhile, Dr. Mohamed El-Sery, Founder and CEO of Mentors' Gate Development, clarified that "Egypt is at a pivotal moment, and we believe this program can catalyze long-term change by merging innovation with industrial and environmental imperatives. This program builds on the success of the Wicked Accelerator's previous global efforts, most notably with Imperial College London's Zikomo Initiative in Zambia - where Mentors' Gate played a key a role in the initiative - significantly reducing milk spoilage through solar refrigeration technology and increasing farmers' profit by 30-60%.
The Egypt edition of Wicked Acceleration Labs seeks to replicate such impact by tackling Egypt's most pressing challenges and capitalize on increased call for sustainable, safety-ensuring and efficient practices, particularly as it comes on the heels of the UK and Egypt's announcement of a pledged $500 M fund towards Egypt's 'green growth' and decarbonization,

Egypt Secures Strategic Membership at ARSO
Taarek Refaat In a notable diplomatic achievement, Egypt has been elected to both the Board of Directors and the Standards Management Committee (SMC) of the African Organisation for Standardisation (ARSO), reinforcing its position as a regional leader in quality infrastructure and industrial development. Represented by the Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality (EOSQ), the country secured the prestigious seats during ARSO's 31st General Assembly, held this week with participation from 34 African nations — the largest attendance in the organization's history. The elections were fiercely contested, with only 12 countries earning seats on the Board and six selected for the influential Standards Management Committee. Egypt now joins an elite group of nations, including Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Rwanda, Uganda, and Zimbabwe, in shaping the continent's standardization roadmap through the SMC. Meanwhile, the Board of Directors now includes Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Zambia, and others. "This victory reflects the deep trust our African partners place in Egyptian expertise and our long-standing commitment to advancing quality systems across the continent," said Eng. Khaled Sofy, Head of EOSQ, following the announcement. Sofy credited the achievement to strategic national support, particularly from Vice Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, Gen. Kamel El-Wazir, noting that 'Egypt's voice in regional and international quality platforms continues to grow stronger thanks to sustained government backing.' The General Assembly also saw several key milestones: The election of Botsile Kebapetse as ARSO's new President for the 2025–2028 term, succeeding Prof. Alex Dodoo. The admission of The Gambia as ARSO's 44th member state, signaling growing continental cohesion around unified quality standards. Egypt's new roles in ARSO are expected to enhance its influence on policy-making related to industrial standardization and technical regulations. Officials say this will play a pivotal role in accelerating intra-African trade, reducing technical barriers, and supporting the goals of Agenda 2063 — the African Union's blueprint for inclusive and sustainable development. 'Being at the heart of ARSO's leadership allows us not just to contribute but to help steer regional industrial policy in line with global standards,' Sofy emphasized. Zohr gas field output increases after well redrilling - Energy
Egypt's Zohr gas field has increased its natural gas output by 60 million cubic feet per day following the successful redrilling of the Zohr-6 well, the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources announced on Friday. The redrilling was carried out using the deepwater drilling rig "Saipem 10000," after it returned to the Zohr gas field in January to resume operations per the approved development plan. Following the completion of Zohr-6, the rig carried out its scheduled tasks. It began drilling at the "Zohr-13" well, which engineering studies estimate will add 55 million cubic feet of gas per day. The drilling operations mark a significant step toward strengthening the natural gas supply system. They will further enhance domestic production levels and confirm earlier predictions by the Ministry of Petroleum. Furthermore, these efforts align with the ministry's strategy to boost domestic production, ensure energy availability, and provide petroleum products to various sectors while meeting citizens' needs. In a statement, the ministry further highlighted its successful partnership with Italian company Eni, operator of the Zohr Field, resulting in the implementation of previously agreed development plans. It highlighted the Egyptian government's full support of its operations to encourage investment in the petroleum sector, maximise domestic output, and ensure energy security and resource sustainability.
