KUCHING (June 21): The Ministry of Transport Sarawak (MOTS) plans to increase the number of traffic parks across the state under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) as part of efforts to strengthen road safety education among school students, said its Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.
He said there are currently six traffic parks in Sarawak, which are maintained and upgraded using government funds allocated to local councils.
'We will increase the number of these traffic parks so that every part of Sarawak has a traffic park,' he told the media after officiating the Sarawak Traffic Games (STG)- Kuching 2025 at Kenyalang Traffic Garden today.
On the STG, Lee said the revival of the competition serves as an effective platform to educate and raise road safety awareness, especially among the younger generation.
He explained that the goal is to reduce road accidents by teaching participants about traffic rules and safe driving through a simulated learning environment.
'Based on the feedback we received, many participants who participated in this competition over 40 years ago still remember the rules they learned to this day,' he said.
Lee added that the simulated road environment used in the games had a deep and lasting impact on the participants.
'There is a traffic police presence, and if any offence occurs, a summons is issued immediately. Some participants even cried after being summoned.
'I see this approach as an impactful and very effective method, so my ministry takes the initiative to revive this program,' he explained.
The competition, formerly known as the Shell Traffic Games, was first introduced in 1963 through a strategic collaboration between the Sarawak government and Shell Malaysia. It was last held in 2015 and has since been rebranded as the Sarawak Traffic Games in 2024.
Meanwhile, the STG – Kuching edition saw the participation of more than 200 students from 10 schools around Kuching including SK St Teresa, SK Kenyalang, SMK Green Road and SMK Pending.
STG 2025 officially began in November 2024, with Miri hosting the first leg of the series.
The competition will run until November 2025 and will be held at existing traffic parks in Kuching, Sri Aman, Sibu, Bintulu, Miri, and Sarikei, which were specifically developed for road safety simulations.
Meanwhile, Kuching South mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said said the return of the competition to Kuching after a 10-year hiatus holds great significance.
'The last time we hosted this programme was in 2015. Many in our community have fond memories of it—and today, we are delighted that those memories can now be passed on to a new generation,' he said.
He added the Kenyalang Traffic Garden itself has over 50 years of history.
'The revival of STG here is more than just symbolic—it reflects a renewed commitment to educating our children in the most engaging and impactful ways possible.' Lee Kim Shin ministry of transport sarawak road safety traffic parks

MAA Calls For Consistent Policies Under 13MP To Boost Automotive Industry

REGION - CENTRAL > NEWS KUALA LUMPUR, July 16 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) has called for consistent, transparent policies under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) to ensure the long-term competitiveness of Malaysia's automotive industry, particularly in the transition toward electric and green mobility. MAA president Mohd Shamsor Mohd Zain stated that policy consistency is crucial for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to invest and plan effectively. bootstrap slideshow 'I think the plans that the government is looking at in terms of new green energy and so on are something that it is looking forward to as part of the national energy roadmap. 'In terms of the country's growth, we need to enhance our technology and implementation. (Thus), things like solar, hydrogen and (others) are probably also being considered (in the 13MP),' he said. Mohd Shamsor said this after the Review of Motor Traders and Manufacturers' Performance for the First Half of 2025 event held here today. Meanwhile, MAA vice-president (manufacturing) Sarly Adle Sarkum said that one of the key concerns for OEMs in Malaysia is the consistency element in the 13MP. 'When the government implements the 13MP, what we want is consistency. Consistency is very important for any OEM to plan a long-term programme or any models. 'At the end of the day, if you decide within the five to 10 year period and then suddenly you change, that changes the whole ball game for the whole industry,' he said

MyLesen B2 gives 663 Miri students safer ride to school

Lee (eleventh left) poses for a photo with JPJ officers, driving academy representatives and students. MIRI (July 13): A total of 663 secondary school students from 18 schools across Miri have successfully participated in the MyLesen B2 Programme, organised by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) Miri at Dewan Dato Permaisuri in Permyjaya here. The special programme enabled eligible students to undergo the required tests and obtain a B2 motorcycle licence at a subsidised fee of only RM250 – a significant reduction from the original cost of RM750, with RM500 covered by the government. Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, who officiated the event, said the programme was initiated out of concern for the students' safety- especially those who ride motorcycles to school without a valid licence or proper safety gear. 'I am deeply worried when I see students going to school on motorcycles without a licence or safety equipment. This endangers both themselves and other road users,' said Lee, who is also the Senadin assemblyman. 'That's why I brought this issue to JPJ at both the state and federal levels to find a solution,' he added. Lee also reminded students of the serious risks involved in traffic accidents and urged them to prioritise road safety. 'Everyone wants to be safe – who doesn't? When you follow traffic rules and ride carefully, you are not only protecting yourself but others as well,' he said, emphasising the importance of both theory and practical training in the licensing process. Students were given a traffic regulation briefing and required to sit for a theory test, and those who passed would proceed to practical motorcycle training and a final test conducted by JPJ. Lee noted that the programme is also open to B40 community members and others without a motorcycle licence. He added that the Ministry is evaluating the possibility of expanding the initiative to other areas if demand continues to grow. 'A driving licence is more than just a document; it symbolises awareness and responsibility. I truly appreciate the cooperation of JPJ, schools, and parents in making this programme a success,' he said. The MyLesen B2 Programme is part of a wider national effort to enhance road safety and reduce the number of unlicensed and underage motorcyclists on Malaysian roads. Also present at the event was JPJ Miri chief enforcement assistant Abdillah Mohamad, who represented Miri JPJ chief Fifi Suhesty Asmuni. lead miri motorcycle MyLesen B2 Programme students
