Bangladesh to hold election by April next year: Chief Adviser Yunus

The Print06-06-2025

During a televised address to the nation, Yunus said the Election Commission will provide a detailed roadmap in due course, the Dhaka Tribune newspaper reported.
The announcement comes amid recent protests by the former premier Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) demanding elections by December this year.
Dhaka, Jun 6 (PTI) Bangladesh's Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus on Friday announced that the national election will be held in the first half of April next year, according to a media report.
'There is immense public and political interest regarding the timing of the election. As I've said before, it will be held between December and June. The government is working to ensure an environment conducive to a credible election within this timeframe,' he said.
Yunus, who took charge after the toppling of the former premier Sheikh Hasina's Awami League government in August last year, said that the government's key responsibility is to hold a clean, peaceful, festive, and inclusive election.
'Our goal is to prevent future crises. That requires institutional reform. Without ensuring good governance in the institutions directly linked to the electoral process, all the sacrifices made by students and citizens will be in vain,' the 84-year-old Nobel Laureate said.
He reiterated that the current administration was formed with three mandates: reform, justice, and election.
'We believe that by the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr, we will reach a broadly acceptable position on reforms and justice — particularly in addressing crimes against humanity, as part of our collective duty to the martyrs of the July uprising,' he said.
On May 28, former premier Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) intensified pressure on the Yunus-led interim government as tens of thousands of youths staged a massive rally demanding elections by December.
'The national election must be held by December. Preparations must begin immediately,' BNP's acting chairman Tarique Rahman said as he joined the rally through a virtual platform from London. PTI GSP GSP

Nitish betrayed socialist ideals: RJD state chief

Madhubani: During his first visit to home district after assuming charge as the RJD state president, Mangani Lal Mandal on Saturday launched a scathing attack on CM Nitish Kumar and his govt. Addressing a large gathering of party leaders, MPs, MLAs and supporters at a reception event held near Rampatti Jail on Saturday, Mandal accused the Nitish-led govt of betraying the ideals of socialist icons such as Ram Manohar Lohia and Karpoori Thakur over the past two decades. He alleged that the govt had reduced marginalised communities, including mahadalits, dalits and extremely backward classes (EBCs) to mere vote banks, using deceptive policies and schemes while denying them dignity and rights. Mandal criticised the govt for rising crime, corruption and administrative oppression, claiming that the voices of ordinary people were being silenced and the issues of the poor overlooked. Praising RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav , Mandal commended his efforts to unify society and bring marginalised groups into the mainstream. He accepted the party's mandate as a challenge, vowing to form a govt in 2025 that would represent the poor, labourers and oppressed communities. He added that the new administration would focus on employment, education, healthcare and the empowerment of weaker sections.

Delhi prepares for its first-ever artificial rain to combat air pollution: Here's how it will work

In a first for the national capital, Delhi is set to witness artificial rain with a goal of reducing air pollution in the city. The flight plan for the cloud seeding operation has been submitted by IIT Kanpur to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Pune for technical coordination and set to be implemented between July 4 and 11, PTI reported. Pollution control effort Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa announced on Saturday that the "conditions are not suitable for cloud seeding until July 3, but a flight window has been proposed between July 4 and 11." He added that a proposal has also been sent to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), requesting the trial to be conducted at a later date. Also Read | Rain lashes parts of Delhi, IMD forecasts more showers in next 2 hours "Our aim is to give Delhiites clean air," Sirsa emphasised, asserting that it's the most basic right of every resident, and the government is exploring every possible solution to achieve it. "That's why we're taking this bold step of artificial rain. We are hopeful it will bring meaningful change," he added. Addressing political accusations Earlier, AAP Delhi chief Saurabh Bharadwaj claimed that BJP and the Centre hindered the city's pollution-control efforts and mocked the proposal for artificial rain during peak winter pollution. Responding to those allegations, Sirsa clarified, "We were the ones who signed the MoU first, made all the payments to IIT Kanpur, and applied for the necessary approvals because we want to take real action." That's why, within just four months of forming the government, we are at the stage of finalising the date for Delhi's first artificial rain," he added. How does artificial rain work ? The project, titled 'Technology Demonstration and Evaluation of Cloud Seeding as an Alternative for Delhi NCR Pollution Mitigation', will involve five aircraft sorties. Each sortie will last around 90 minutes and cover approximately 100 square kilometres over low-security air zones in northwest and outer Delhi. This unique formulation, developed by IIT Kanpur consists of silver iodide nanoparticles, iodised salt, and rock salt, designed to catalyse artificial rain by accelerating droplet formation in moisture-rich clouds which will effectively wash away pollutants from the environment. Waqf law protest likely to draw large crowd today

1 2 Patna: Patna is set to witness a major mobilisation on Sunday as Muslims from across the country are expected to gather at Gandhi Maidan to voice strong opposition to the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. The event, titled 'Waqf bachao, dastoor bachao conference', is being organised by Imarat-e-Shariah, which operates in Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha. The newly enacted waqf law by the NDA-led central govt is currently under legal scrutiny in the Supreme Court. Critics argue it undermines religious autonomy, infringes upon fundamental rights and violates established legal principles and Supreme Court judgments. "The aim of the conference is to raise a united and dignified voice against the recently enacted Waqf Act, 2025, which is widely seen as trampling upon the Islamic principles of waqf," said a press note issued by the organisers. Fazle Rahma Rahmani, media convener of Imarat-e-Shariah, said, "We cannot give an exact number, but the mobilisation teams have estimated a turnout of around 10 lakh. People are coming not because of prominent personalities, but to register their absolute rejection of the Act." He added that the headquarters of the Imarat-e-Shariah at Phulwarisharif, Patna, is coordinating the effort. "Maulana Ahmad Wali Faisal Rahmani is the chief organiser. Separate mobilisation teams were formed for Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha," he added. Participants began arriving in Patna from Saturday morning. Arrangements have been made for their accommodation in mosques, dharmashalas and community halls across the city. Volunteers will assist with crowd movement and logistics throughout Sunday. "The conference represents a peaceful, democratic and constitutional expression of the community's collective will to demand the rollback of the draconian legislation," the organisers said, adding that the event also carries significant political messaging.
