Bangladesh to hold election by April next year: Chief Adviser Yunus

Dhaka, Jun 6 (PTI) Bangladesh's Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus on Friday announced that the national election will be held in the first half of April next year, according to a media report.
'There is immense public and political interest regarding the timing of the election. As I've said before, it will be held between December and June. The government is working to ensure an environment conducive to a credible election within this timeframe,' he said.
Yunus, who took charge after the toppling of the former premier Sheikh Hasina's Awami League government in August last year, said that the government's key responsibility is to hold a clean, peaceful, festive, and inclusive election.
'Our goal is to prevent future crises. That requires institutional reform. Without ensuring good governance in the institutions directly linked to the electoral process, all the sacrifices made by students and citizens will be in vain,' the 84-year-old Nobel Laureate said.
He reiterated that the current administration was formed with three mandates: reform, justice, and election.
'We believe that by the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr, we will reach a broadly acceptable position on reforms and justice — particularly in addressing crimes against humanity, as part of our collective duty to the martyrs of the July uprising,' he said.
On May 28, former premier Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) intensified pressure on the Yunus-led interim government as tens of thousands of youths staged a massive rally demanding elections by December.

Delhi prepares for its first-ever artificial rain to combat air pollution: Here's how it will work
In a first for the national capital, Delhi is set to witness artificial rain with a goal of reducing air pollution in the city. The flight plan for the cloud seeding operation has been submitted by IIT Kanpur to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Pune for technical coordination and set to be implemented between July 4 and 11, PTI reported. Pollution control effort Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa announced on Saturday that the "conditions are not suitable for cloud seeding until July 3, but a flight window has been proposed between July 4 and 11." He added that a proposal has also been sent to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), requesting the trial to be conducted at a later date. Addressing political accusations Earlier, AAP Delhi chief Saurabh Bharadwaj claimed that BJP and the Centre hindered the city's pollution-control efforts and mocked the proposal for artificial rain during peak winter pollution. Waqf law protest likely to draw large crowd today
1 2 Patna: Patna is set to witness a major mobilisation on Sunday as Muslims from across the country are expected to gather at Gandhi Maidan to voice strong opposition to the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. The event, titled 'Waqf bachao, dastoor bachao conference', is being organised by Imarat-e-Shariah, which operates in Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha. The newly enacted waqf law by the NDA-led central govt is currently under legal scrutiny in the Supreme Court. Critics argue it undermines religious autonomy, infringes upon fundamental rights and violates established legal principles and Supreme Court judgments. "The aim of the conference is to raise a united and dignified voice against the recently enacted Waqf Act, 2025, which is widely seen as trampling upon the Islamic principles of waqf," said a press note issued by the organisers. Fazle Rahma Rahmani, media convener of Imarat-e-Shariah, said, "We cannot give an exact number, but the mobilisation teams have estimated a turnout of around 10 lakh. People are coming not because of prominent personalities, but to register their absolute rejection of the Act." He added that the headquarters of the Imarat-e-Shariah at Phulwarisharif, Patna, is coordinating the effort. "Maulana Ahmad Wali Faisal Rahmani is the chief organiser. Separate mobilisation teams were formed for Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha," he added. Participants began arriving in Patna from Saturday morning. Arrangements have been made for their accommodation in mosques, dharmashalas and community halls across the city. Volunteers will assist with crowd movement and logistics throughout Sunday.
