With their franchise-tying home losing streak in the past, the Kansas City Royals now get to focus on taking a series from the reigning World Series champions.
The Royals can post their first winning home series in nearly two months with a second consecutive victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday afternoon.
One day after losing 5-4 to match the club-record 11-game home losing streak, Kansas City rapped out 14 hits, highlighted by a three-run homer and two-run double from Vinnie Pasquantino, to defeat Los Angeles 9-5 on Saturday.
Desperately in need of offense, the Royals scored one more run than they totaled while losing their previous six games.
'A day we've been waiting for,' Pasquantino told FanDuel Sports Newtork after his five RBIs. 'We need to do it more often.'
'(Saturday) felt like a nice step,' he added. 'Just keep moving forward.'
Kansas City is 4-18 at home since last winning consecutive contests there as part of a four-game winning streak from May 5-9.
Bobby Witt Jr. and Jonathan India each had four hits on Saturday, and Seth Lugo struck out eight over 5 2/3 scoreless innings despite allowing four hits and five walks against the potent Dodgers, who didn't threaten until a four-run ninth.
Scheduled Kansas City starter Kris Bubic (6-5, 2.18 ERA) will hope for similar run support on Sunday. He owned a 1.45 ERA through his first 11 starts of 2025 but has a 4.37 ERA while going 1-3 since then.
The left-hander did manage a quality start Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Rays, when he yielded four runs (two earned) and eight hits while striking out eight without a walk in six innings of a 5-1 defeat.
'He was good,' Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. 'His command wasn't quite as sharp early in the game. But he competes like crazy and gives us a chance.'
Though this will be Bubic's first appearance versus the Los Angeles Dodgers, superstar Shohei Ohtani is 3-for-4 with a home run, double and two RBIs against him.
Ohtani, who threw two scoreless innings in his third 2025 start on Saturday, went 0-for-4 at the plate, striking out three times. In the series opener on Friday, he was 2-for-3 with a triple, home run and two RBIs.
Teammate Freddie Freeman, who is batting just .200 in June after a .410 clip in May, went 3-for-3 with two walks Saturday, including his first home run since May 11. However, Freeman is expected to have a planned day off Sunday but likely will be available late, if needed.
Saturday's defeat snapped a five-game winning streak for Los Angeles, which has not lost back-to-back contests since June 6-7 at St. Louis.
'It never feels good to lose a game, but (Ohtani's pitching and Freeman's offense are) silver linings,' Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. 'We got to make the plays we're supposed to make.'
The Dodgers have not officially named a starting pitcher for this rubber match. Regardless, their staff must again deal with Witt, who is batting .340 with six doubles in the past 12 games. He's also 15-for-45 (.333) with one home run and seven RBIs in 11 career games against Los Angeles.
Meanwhile, the Dodgers' Max Muncy had two hits with an RBI on Saturday after hitting a two-run homer in the series opener. He's 9-for-20 with 16 RBIs in the last five games.

Ryne Nelson retires 16 straight as Diamondbacks knock off Royals

Field Level Media 06 Jul 2025, 04:49 GMT+10 (Photo credit: Rick Scuteri-Imagn Images) Ryne Nelson retired the first 16 batters he faced, Randal Grichuk homered and the host Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Kansas City Royals 7-1 on Saturday. The Diamondbacks snapped a three-game losing streak and evened the three-game series. The Royals had won three of their last four. Nelson (5-2) allowed a run and four hits over seven innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out five. Freddy Fermin's looping single to right center broke the spell of 16 consecutive batters retired with one out in the sixth. Jonathan India lined a single to center one out later to send Fermin to third. Bobby Witt Jr. followed with a run-scoring single to right to put the Royals on the board and make the score 4-1. Nelson got help in preventing further damage in the inning when centerfielder Alek Thomas made a sliding catch coming in on Vinnie Pasquantino's liner with two out and runners on first and third. Kansas City starter and loser Michael Wacha (4-9) gave up four runs and four hits in four-plus innings with four walks and four strikeouts. Arizona took a 2-0 lead in the third on RBI singles by Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suarez. Lourdes Gurriel's two-run double in the fifth doubled the lead to 4-0 and James McCann's RBI double in the seventh made it 5-1. Grichuk added his two-run homer in the seventh. The drive to right-centerfield was originally called an inside the park home run. But replays showed the ball actually went over the fence, hit a chair and ricocheted back onto the field. It was Grichuk's fifth home run. Diamondbacks right fielder and leadoff man Corbin Carroll returned after being out since June 18, when he suffered a chip fracture of his left wrist. He went hitless in five at-bats. --Field Level Media

Nelson retires first 16 Royals, Carroll returns in Diamondbacks' 7-1 victory

PHOENIX — Ryne Nelson retired the first 16 Kansas City batters and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Royals 7-1 on Saturday to end a three-game losing streak. Nelson retires first 16 Royals, Carroll returns in Diamondbacks' 7-1 victory Nelson , who moved into the rotation full-time when Corbin Burnes was sidelined for the season by elbow surgery, gave up four hits and one run over seven innings. The right-hander threw 86 pitches, walked none and struck out five. Freddy Fermin's sharp single to center with one out in the sixth ended Nelson's perfect-game bid. Fermin scored on Bobby Witt Jr.'s two-out single. Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suárez had RBI singles in the third off Michael Wacha , and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. doubled in two runs in the fifth for Arizona. Gurriel also tripled in the seventh off Taylor Clarke and scored on James McCann's double. Wacha lasted four-plus innings, giving up four hits and four runs. He threw 97 pitches, walking four and striking out four. Randal Grichuk hit an inside-the-park homer in the eighth. With a man on base, he hit a long fly to right-center that bounced away from outfielders Jac Caglianone and Kyle Isbel and into center field as Grichuk scored standing up for his fifth homer of the season. Before the game, the Diamondbacks activated outfielder Corbin Carroll from the injured list. The 2023 National League Rookie of the Year, who has 20 homers and a major league-leading nine triples, was 0 for 5 in his return. He had been sidelined since June 18, when he sustained a chip fracture in his left wrist when he was hit by a pitch in Toronto. Utilityman Tim Tawa was optioned to Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move. Gurriel's two-out, two-run double off reliever John Schreiber made it 4-0 in the fifth. Nelson is 3-0 with a 2.01 ERA in his last five starts. Royals RHP Michael Lorenzen opposes Diamondbacks RHP Anthony DeSclafani on Sunday the series finale. Phillies' Ranger Suárez gets a shorter start as the ace left-hander's workload grows

PHILADELPHIA — Ranger Suárez has piled up enough pitches and innings this season for the reigning NL East champion Philadelphia Phillies to fit the modern definition of a workhorse. Phillies' Ranger Suárez gets a shorter start as the ace left-hander's workload grows On Saturday, it was time for a break. Or at least time to shorten the left-hander's outing against Cincinnati to give him some rest and try to prevent wear and tear on a body that broke down at the end of last season. Suárez was pulled after just five innings and 80 pitches, the fewest of each since his first start of the season in early May. Suárez earned a no-decision but did his part — along with home runs from Alec Bohm, Kyle Schwarber and Edmundo Sosa — to help the Phillies beat the Reds 5-1. Manger Rob Thomson said because of a recent heavy workload, Suárez entered on an 85-pitch limit. Suárez had pitched at least seven innings in each of his last five starts and thrown at least six in all but his first start of the year, when he allowed seven runs in 3 2/3 innings. Suárez has been superb since then. He made six June starts and threw at least 94 pitches in all of them, and he has a 1.22 ERA over his last 11 starts. 'We went into today just trying to pull back a little bit,' Thomson said. 'I don't really concern myself with because he pitches and that's what he did today. He threw strikes, first-pitch strikes.' Suárez said he agreed with Thomson's decision to play it safe with his left shoulder and back. Suárez has not allowed more than one earned run since June 7 at Pittsburgh, and he's permitted one or zero earned runs in nine of his 12 starts. Even though he missed April as he recovered from a back injury, Suárez's numbers are strong enough to merit consideration for a second straight All-Star nod. Thomson stumped for his star pitcher — who's eligible for free agency at the end of the season — along with fellow starters Zack Wheeler and Cristopher Sánchez to represent the NL on July 15 in Atlanta. He'll find out Sunday if he's on the team. 'When the season starts, one of the goals you have as a player is to go to the All-Star Game,' Suárez said through an interpreter. 'On that end, I'm a little hopeful. If that happens, I'm excited about it. But I think the main thing for us right now is to focus on just finishing the season as healthy as possible.' The Phillies have reason to be cautious with Suárez as they chase their fourth straight playoff berth and first World Series title since 2008. Suárez went 10-2 with a 1.83 ERA in 16 starts last season through June 25 before a bad back stuck him on the injured list and he tailed off with a 2-6 mark and a 6.54 ERA over his last 11 starts. Suárez also missed time with a back injury in 2022. The Phillies need Suárez healthy and at his best in October, even if pitch counts cost him a win in July. 'If we have to do it again," Thomson said, 'we'll do it again.' MLB: /mlb This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.
