Jordan's cabinet approves framework to boost green hydrogen projects
AMMAN – The Cabinet on Wednesday approved a "comprehensive" framework aimed at accelerating the development of green hydrogen projects across the Kingdom. The newly endorsed mechanism outlines a strategic vision to position the Kingdom as a "regional" hub for green hydrogen production, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, said. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources prepared the framework, which emphasises Jordan's natural and regulatory advantages, and presents the Kingdom as an 'attractive' destination for investment in this "emerging" sector. The ministry described the framework for developing green hydrogen projects as a "strategic step towards positioning Jordan as a regional centre for green hydrogen production." The ministry said that the framework outlines a comprehensive national vision that leverages Jordan's "abundant renewable energy resources, particularly solar and wind power, as well as the country's vast, unutilised lands suitable for green hydrogen development." The concept paper, prepared by the ministry, highlights Jordan's natural and regulatory advantages, noting that they make the Kingdom an attractive destination for investment in the emerging green hydrogen sector, according to Petra. The approved mechanism includes a "detailed" plan to facilitate investment in the industry, and designates strategic sites in southern Jordan for renewable energy production and allocate an "industrial zone" within the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority for establishing green hydrogen plants and water desalination facilities. The plan entails the development of shared infrastructure in Aqaba, including desalination units, green ammonia storage facilities, export terminals and other critical logistics needed for project implementation. The mechanism offers a package of incentives backed by current legislation to attract investors, including the Investment Environment Law and the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Law. It also establishes a "contractual" pathway for investors, from signing memoranda of understanding and conducting feasibility studies to securing land-use agreements and finalising investment contracts. The government has formed a national green hydrogen committee comprising relevant stakeholders. The committee will oversee implementation of the strategy and coordinate related investments in line with Jordan's broader vision for strengthening food security, increasing exports, and transitioning to a sustainable, green economy. The government last week approved two land-use agreements, one with Jordan's Philadelphia Solar and the other with Germany's Enertrag, to conduct feasibility studies for green hydrogen production projects. "These are part of the government's broader strategy to position Jordan as a regional hub for green hydrogen," the statement read. With these agreements, the number of approved land-use deals for hydrogen development has reached six, out of 13 MoUs previously signed with leading energy companies. The six firms have completed preliminary feasibility studies and technical reports and are now advancing to the land allocation stage, the statement said. During this phase, companies will carry out "detailed" measurements of renewable energy sources to prepare "final" feasibility studies. Investment decisions will be based on these outcomes, the statement said. © Copyright The Jordan Times. All rights reserved. Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. (

Gulf Cooperation Council to Launch Unified Tourism Visa for Member States
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is set to introduce a unified tourism visa, as announced by GCC Secretary General Jassem Al Budaiwi on Wednesday (July 2). According to The Gulf News, Al Budaiwi commended the collaborative efforts of the Gulf states in progressing the initiative, which aims to facilitate easier travel across the region. Once implemented, the single visa will allow tourists to move freely between the six GCC member countries: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. 'The unified visa reflects the vision of our leaders to strengthen integration and cooperation,' said Al Budaiwi. He added that the move aligns with broader plans to modernise the region's travel infrastructure and to support economic growth through tourism. The new visa, officially named the GCC Grand Tours Visa, was approved in November 2023 during the 40th meeting of GCC interior ministers in Oman. The initiative draws parallels to the Schengen visa in Europe and represents a notable step in the Gulf's efforts to diversify its economies, attract international visitors, and encourage intra-regional tourism. Although the final details have yet to be confirmed, the visa is expected to allow travel to all six member states with a single application. It will reportedly be valid for tourism and family visits, available exclusively through an online portal, and offered with a validity period likely ranging from 30 to 90 days. Applicants may also have the option to apply for a visa covering a single country or all six. The scheme is expected to reduce the cost and administrative burden compared to applying for separate visas for each country. Requirements for applicants will likely include a valid passport with at least six months' validity, a completed online application form, a recent passport-sized photograph, proof of accommodation such as hotel bookings or an invitation letter, travel insurance that includes medical coverage, evidence of sufficient funds such as bank statements, and a return or onward travel ticket. Once launched, applicants will be able to submit their information through an official website, select their visa type, upload the required documents, pay the relevant fees online, and receive their e-visa via email. A printed or digital copy will be needed for airport procedures.

Look: Indonesia President performs Umrah, prays inside Kaaba
Dressed in simple white garments and barefoot, Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto concluded his visit to Saudi Arabia on Thursday by performing the Umrah pilgrimage. Subianto also prayed voluntarily inside the Holy Kaaba, in a gesture that holds profound spiritual significance for Muslims, as it represents the holiest site in Islam and the centre of the Islamic world. Performing prayers inside the Kaaba is also considered an exceedingly rare and deeply honoured opportunity. Since Muslims around the world face the Kaaba during their daily prayers (Qibla), entering and praying within it is seen as a moment of intimate connection with the divine. Commenting on the visit, Subianto said: "After holding a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Jeddah, I continued my journey to the city of Makkah to perform the Umrah pilgrimage together with several ministers of the Red and White Cabinet." "Upon arriving at the Grand Mosque, I had the opportunity to meet and greet Indonesian pilgrims who were performing their worship in the holy land," added the president who shared photos of his religious journey on X. Indonesia is the world's largest Muslim-majority nation, with Muslims comprising 90% of its 270 million people. During Subianto's trip, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia signed several deals and memorandums of understanding worth around $27 billion between private sector institutions in fields including clean energy and petrochemicals, Saudi state news agency SPA reported on Wednesday. Trade between the two countries amounted to around $31.5 billion in the last five years.
