Bangladesh tribunal sentences former PM Sheikh Hasina to 6 months in prison in contempt of court case
A three-member tribunal led by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder gave this order. Earlier, A Y Moshiuzzaman, a senior lawyer, was appointed as amicus curiae (friend of the court) by the ICT for a full hearing of the contempt of court case.
The Chief Prosecutor filed a contempt of court complaint against Sheikh Hasina and Awami League leader Shakil Alam Bulbul on April 30, in light of their statements regarding the case related to the July mass uprising incident.
The formal charges stated that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was the mastermind behind the inhumane acts, such as crimes against humanity, murders, and the burning of bodies across the country during the movement to overthrow the government in 2024. These crimes were organised on her orders.
'There are 227 cases against me, so I have a license to kill 227 people', Sheikh Hasina said in an alleged audio clip that went viral a few months ago. Later, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police conducted a forensic examination of the conversation and found its authenticity. After that, a contempt of court application was filed with the tribunal.
The prosecution said that Sheikh Hasina did not appear in person or provide an explanation through a lawyer even after the notice was published in the newspaper. In this situation, the tribunal can now punish those involved by the law.
Earlier in the day, anti-national and anti-independence forces had staged a mock trial against Sheikh Hasina in a kangaroo court formed to implement their political objectives in Bangladesh, the Awami League said in a statement.

Kerala: Youth Congress workers stage protest over Kottayam building collapse
Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], July 5 (ANI): A group of Youth Congress workers staged a protest march outside the official residence of Kerala Health Minister Veena George in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday, demanding her resignation over the building collapse at the Kottayam Medical College. Police used water cannons to disperse the workers of the Youth Congress and detained them. This comes after a building block collapsed at the Government Medical College Hospital in Kottayam, claiming an individual's life and injuring two others on July 3. Earlier on Friday, a group of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) youth wing workers also staged a protest march outside the Kerala Health Minister's residence in Thiruvananthapuram. BJP workers also held a protest on Friday, demanding Minister George's resignation over the issue. Minister for Ports, Cooperation, and Devaswoms, VN Vasavan, described the Kottayam Medical College building collapse as an 'unfortunate' incident and announced that the Kerala government would provide immediate financial assistance of Rs 50,000 to the affected family. He said, 'CM visited the spot yesterday itself. Rs 50,000 will be given as immediate help to the family. The State Cabinet will discuss and decide on financial help for the family. Kottayam Medical College is one of the best-performing hospitals in India. The incident is unfortunate.' He further clarified that there was no lapse from the government side and added, 'Did not ask to stop rescue operation, it was for making way to let the Hitachi excavator enter. Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], July 5 (ANI): BJP MLA Sankar Ghosh on Saturday doubted if West Bengal's Higher Education authorities would fully enforce the High Court's order shutting down student union offices in colleges and universities. He called them 'spineless' before the ruling TMC. 'Without student union elections, how can a union room function as a component of the college or university? All these issues are well known to the college or university authorities... They are spineless in front of the ruling party, TMC,' Ghosh told ANI. 'Now, the High Court has passed an order. But after such an order is passed, who will execute it? The principal governing body, run by the TMC party office, holds executive authority. They likely won't close the union room permanently, just temporarily for show. The main issue is that West Bengal's entire administrative system is broken,' he added. The Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed the West Bengal Higher Education Department to ensure that the union rooms in all colleges and universities in the state remain locked till the time the students' union elections in those institutes are conducted and the results declared. The Court passed the order in the case of a law student's alleged rape in the student union room of the South Calcutta Law College. Earlier, the High Court sought a response from the West Bengal Government on three Public Interest Litigations (PILs) regarding the alleged gangrape. The Court also questioned why the governing body of the college was not included in the case. On July 2, Kolkata Police stated that the Detective Department of the police force would take over the investigation in the alleged gang rape case. Earlier, BJP's fact-finding committee member Manan Kumar Mishra stated alleged that the police were 'hiding' the family of the rape survivor and not allowing anyone to meet the security guard, who is the fourth accused in the incident. He further alleged that there was an attempt to 'tamper' with the First Information Report (FIR) to change the name of the accused. (ANI)
