"Visionary whose thoughts still guide BJP, country": Dharmendra Pradhan pays tribute to Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his death anniversary
New Delhi [India], June 23 (ANI): Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Monday paid tribute to Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee on his 72nd death anniversary, remembering him as a visionary whose principles continue to shape the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the country.
Highlighting Dr Mukherjee's role in advocating for a unified India, Pradhan reflected on his 1953 protest against dual systems in the country, which led to Mukherjee's brave entry into Jammu and Kashmir.
'For the BJP and the Jan Sangh, Syama Prasad Mukherjee was a visionary whose thoughts still guide the Bharatiya Janata Party and the country. Seventy-two years ago, in 1953, he raised an important issue while protesting that there cannot be two systems within one country. He believed that if India had two separate laws or systems, it could not truly be called united or independent. To prove his point, he risked his life and entered Jammu and Kashmir. That moment became a part of history,' Pradhan said.
He further emphasised that it took 72 years to fulfil his sacrifice, with the historic abrogation of Article 370 by the government in 2019, a tribute to Mukherjee's enduring legacy.
'If we compare both dates, it took almost 72 years to fulfil Syama Prasad Mukherjee's sacrifice. It was the privilege of the Prime Minister to make his dream come true. On August 5th, 2019, the government made a historic decision to abrogate Article 370, honouring Dr Mukherjee's vision,' Pradhan said.
Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta, BJP MPs from Delhi, Delhi assembly speaker Vijendra Gupta and other senior members of the Bhartiya Janata Party accompanied him.
Syama Prasad Mookerjee was the founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the ideological parent organisation of the BJP. He also served as the Minister for Industry and Supply in Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's cabinet.
According to the BJP's official website, on the Delhi Pact with Liaquat Ali Khan issue, Mookerjee resigned from the Cabinet on April 6, 1950. Later on October 21, 1951, Mookerjee founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in Delhi and became its first president.
Mookerjee went to visit Kashmir in 1953 and was arrested on May 11. He died in detention on June 23, 1953. (ANI)

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)'s Poorvanchali wing Monday staged a protest outside the office of Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa in Rajouri Garden, for allegedly calling those whose houses have been demolished as 'Rohingyas.' On Sunday, the AAP launched a massive protest against the demolitions taking place in Delhi. After the AAP's leaders and former ministers protested at Jantar Mantar Sunday, Sirsa told reporters, 'I want to tell Kejriwal ji that you can stand up for the Rohingya and Bangladeshi people as much as you want, but they will not be allowed to stay in the country under any circumstances. Arvind Kejriwal ji, if you have so much love and affection for them, then why don't you take them to your home and make them live with you?' A day later, the AAP leaders reached outside the minister's office in Rajouri Garden, demanding a public apology, saying his remarks were an insult to the migrant community from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Pawan Kalyan, Annamalai and others booked for violating court conditions at Lord Murugan conference in Madurai
A criminal case was registered late Monday against Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, former Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai, and key organisers of the Lord Murugan Devotees Conference held in Madurai on June 22. The case, filed at the E3 Annanagar Police Station, cites violations of the Madras High Court's restrictions on political and religious rhetoric during the high-profile spiritual event. According to the Madurai police, the complaint was filed by S Vanjinathan, an advocate and coordinator of the Madurai People's Federation for Communal Harmony. He alleged that the speeches and resolutions presented at the event incited communal hostility and violated conditions laid down by the Madras High Court, which had permitted the event with strict limits on religious and political messaging. The case — Crime No 497/2025 — was registered under sections 196(1)(a), 299, 302, and 353(1)(b)(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The named accused include Kadeshwara Subramaniam, president of the Hindu Munnani, S Muthukumar, its state secretary, Pawan Kalyan, Annamalai, and unidentified organising members of the RSS, BJP, Hindu Munnani, and allied Sangh Parivar groups. Police sources said the content of speeches and electronic communications during the event included language that 'promoted enmity between groups based on religion, race, and region' and 'outraged the religious feelings' of other communities. The FIR also alleges that public remarks and actions at the venue were 'intended to provoke disharmony under the guise of spiritual assembly.' Held amid much fanfare on a stage flanked by replicas of the six sacred abodes (Arupadai Veedu) of Lord Murugan, the event had seen a massive turnout, with Hindu Munnani claiming over one lakh devotees in attendance. Though the Madras High Court had explicitly barred political content at the conference, several speakers, including Pawan Kalyan, made political remarks wrapped in a spiritual narrative. Dressed in a green veshti traditionally worn by Murugan devotees, Pawan Kalyan took direct aim at what he termed 'fake secularists' and atheists. 'Secularism has become a shield for some to denigrate Hindu gods,' he said. 'I respect Christianity and Islam, but don't disrespect Hindu Dharma.' He called Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar an 'incarnation of Lord Murugan' and criticised political leaders for questioning why a Murugan conference was held in Tamil Nadu. The conference also passed six resolutions, including one urging Hindus to vote en bloc in the upcoming Assembly elections, and another demanding the DMK government stop 'treating temples as revenue sources.' Former BJP state chief Annamalai, also named in the FIR, declared that the conference's success showed that 'people have chosen 'Swami' over 'Nidhi' — a veiled jab at political rivals. Although the BJP's ally, AIADMK, officially remained silent on the event, four of its senior leaders, including R B Udhayakumar and Sellur K Raju, attended the conference.
