Politics of division creeping into Kerala society: Minister Saji Cherian
Speaking at a function in Alappuzha on Wednesday, Mr. Cherian said that while one group was opposing zumba dance, another was deliberately targeting the film JSK – Janaki vs State of Kerala.
Terming the Christian Association and Alliance for Social Action (CASA) 'a communal outfit', the Minister said it was spreading anti-Muslim propaganda. 'CASA has the backing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Their aim is to create division in society,' Mr. Cherian said.
'Communal agendas'
He said the actor in the film JSK is a BJP leader. 'Janaki is the name of a deity. Films with this title have been released in Kerala in the past without sparking any controversy. But now, those currently in the censor board are promoting communal agendas,' the Minister said.
He questioned whose interests the Opposition was seeking to protect in Kerala. 'Whatever indecent or communal statements someone makes, the Opposition in Kerala is turning them into political weapons to gain support from communal forces,' Mr. Cherian said.
He also alleged that the Congress party was increasingly being overshadowed by the Indian Union Muslim League.

One Maoist has been killed by the security forces in an ongoing anti-Maoist operation in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, said the police on Saturday (July 5, 2025). Earlier, said the officer, based on the intelligence received about the presence of a large cadre of Maoists in the National Park area of the Bijapur district, a search operation was started by joint teams of security forces. 'During the operation, intermittent encounters are going on between security forces and Maoists since yesterday, 04/07/2025. In the search operation so far, the body of one male Maoist has been recovered from the encounter site along with weapons,' he said. A police statement added that since the operation was still going on, more information was 'not being shared keeping in mind the safety of the soldiers involved in the operation'. In his recent visit to Chhattisgarh late June, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had said that in a departure from, the past anti-Maoist operations would continue in the Bastar forests in monsoon this year. Traditionally, the operations are halted during the rains because sustained rainfall and floods hamper any action inside dense forests.

‘Jihadi, anti-Hindu': How BJP described Raj, Uddhav Thackeray's reunion at joint rally
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray and MNS head Raj Thackeray appeared together publicly for the first time in 20 years. They united in opposition to what they called the Maharashtra government's alleged enforcement of the Hindi language in the state, reported PTI. Following their reunion, a few leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party have called out the joint rally, stating that it is a measure for 'public appeasement' and an 'anti-Hindu gathering.' Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shelar criticised Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena for their joint rally in Mumbai on Saturday, calling it a "public appeasement" campaign aimed at elections rather than a genuine event for language issues. Ashish Shelar, in a post on the social media platform X, condemned the Shiv Sena (UBT), saying, "This isn't about language... It's a public appeasement campaign for elections! With the municipal elections approaching, the panicked Ubatha Sena (a mocking term for Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena) has suddenly remembered 'brotherhood.' He further added, "Today's so-called family get-together in Worli was a public appeasement event for the very brother they once threw out of the house. There is no real love for language involved here... and they've never truly cared for it anyway! This is nothing but a desperate scramble to regain power in the municipal corporation, so they can once again loot Mumbai. Mr. Uddhav Thackeray's handshake with Raj Thackeray is nothing but 'Trying to win the family truce because they know they'll lose the election!' Meanwhile Minister Nitesh Rane slammed both Raj and Uddhav Thackeray for the joint rally in Mumbai, terming it as a "jihadi and anti-Hindu gathering" aimed at dividing society and weakening the state. 'We are Hindus and also proud Marathi. The way jihadis attempt to divide our society, these people are doing the same. Be it (banned) Popular Front of India (PFI) or Students' Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) who work against the idea of a Hindu Rashtra, these two (Thackerays) are no different. They are trying to weaken the state,' PTI quoted Rane while he was speaking to the reporters on Friday. The BJP leader said, 'The Worli meeting is aimed at dividing Hindus and Marathi people. It can be equated with the rallies of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), PFI or SIMI. It will cause the biggest damage to Hindus in the state. It is an anti-Hindu rally."

Donald Trump face backlash for using antisemitic slur ‘shylocks' during Fourth of July rally speech
US President Donald Trump is facing sharp criticism after using the term ' shylocks ' during a speech in Iowa on Thursday(July 3) a word long condemned as an antisemitic stereotype rooted in centuries-old prejudice. Speaking at a patriotic Fourth of July rally touting the passage of his sweeping domestic 'mega bill,' Trump praised provisions aimed at protecting family farms. But while criticizing lenders who impose what he called 'predatory' terms, Trump said: 'No death tax, no estate tax, no going to the banks and borrowing from, in some cases, a fine banker, and in some cases, shylocks and bad people. They destroyed a lot of families, but we did the opposite.' The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), a prominent Jewish civil rights group, condemned the remark on Friday, calling it 'very troubling and irresponsible.' Live Events 'The term 'Shylock' evokes a centuries-old antisemitic trope about Jews and greed that is extremely offensive and dangerous,' the group said in a statement on social media . Asked by reporters about the comment after returning to Washington, Trump claimed he was unaware of the term's antisemitic history. 'I've never heard it that way,' he said. 'To me, Shylock is somebody that's a money lender at high rates. You view it differently than me.' What's the word's history? The term 'Shylock' originates from Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, where a Jewish character named Shylock demands a 'pound of flesh' from a debtor. Over time, the name came to symbolize exploitative lending, but also became a painful antisemitic caricature of Jews as greedy or ruthless with money. The controversy isn't new in US politics. In 2014, then–Vice President Joe Biden used the same word in a speech about military loan scams. He later apologized, calling it a 'poor choice of words.' Pattern of comments Trump has repeatedly been accused of invoking antisemitic tropes despite portraying himself as a strong supporter of Israel. He faced criticism in 2022 after hosting white supremacist Nick Fuentes for dinner, and has made remarks questioning the loyalty of Jewish Americans who vote for Democrats. Democratic Rep. Dan Goldman, who is Jewish, slammed the Iowa comment as 'blatant and vile antisemitism ,' adding that Trump 'knows exactly what he's doing.' 'When words with violent histories are used carelessly, it emboldens hate,' said Amy Spitalnick, CEO of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs. 'Leaders must do better.'
