NHAI to carry out feasibility of 2 new links to declog central Delhi
NEW DELHI: Anticipating that the completion of Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Dehradun expressways in the near future would result in more traffic passing through NDMC and Central Delhi areas, Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari has directed NHAI to carry out feasibility studies for two new links, a tunnel or elevated stretch from Sarai Kale Khan to the proposed INA-Nelson Mandela Marg elevated corridor and a tunnel from Gyarah Murti or Talkatora Stadium to the elevated corridor.
The minister has directed that these corridors be 'incorporated' into the bids for the elevated corridor from INA to Mahipalpur Nelson Mandela Road in Vasant Kunj, as per the minutes of a meeting that Gadkari chaired on June 4 and that was attended by Delhi Lt governor V K Saxena and CM Rekha Gupta, among others.
The national highways authority of India (NHAI), which had earlier invited bids for the INA-Nelson Mandela Marg link, has received bids from consultancy firms for preparing a detailed project report (DPR).
'We can incorporate the provision of carrying out the feasibility studies Nitin Gadkari for the two proposed links in the same. A comprehensive detailed report would be more helpful for better management of traffic,' said an official.
On June 5, TOI had first reported that NHAI would carry out a technical study to explore the possibility of a tunnel from Gyarah Murti to the proposed elevated road extending from INA to Nelson Mandela Marg in Vasant Kunj.

The CM's office had said a feasibility study would be carried out for a tunnel connecting Sarai Kale Khan to IGI airport.
As per the minutes of the meeting, when the INA-Nelson Mandela Marg link proposal came up for discussion, Gadkari 'expressed concerns' that this project would not fully resolve traffic congestion in NDMC and Central Delhi areas. At present, the Delhi-Meerut and Delhi-Dehradun expressways terminate near Sarai Kale Khan on Ring Road.
The DND-Sohna link of Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will also open by the end of this year.
The minister stressed that with all these roads becoming fully operational, there would be more traffic flow in the 'already congested NDMC area and Central Delhi', since the Ring Road faces huge traffic snarls through the day. It was in this context that he directed that feasibility studies be carried out for two new links.

PM will bow before Trump deadline on trade deal: Rahul; Goyal hits back
Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Saturday targeted PM Narendra Modi over the proposed trade deal with the US and claimed that the PM will 'meekly bow' before the tariff deadline set by the Trump administration as Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal asserted that India negotiates from a position of strength and not under deadlines. Goyal also accused the Congress of 'negotiating and signing agreements that were not in the national interest' during that party-led UPA government's tenure. On Saturday, Goyal said, 'India does not negotiate under deadlines. We negotiate keeping national interest in mind, and national interest is paramount in all our engagements across the world.' Piyush Goyal slams Siddaramaiah over Covid vaccine remarks, demand public apology
BENGALURU: Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal hit out at Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for suggesting that the Covid-19 vaccine may have been linked to heart attack deaths, calling the remarks an insult to Indian scientists, startups, and the country's pharmaceutical strength. He demanded a public apology, stating that Siddaramaiah's comments undermined the people who worked tirelessly during the pandemic. Speaking at IIT Madras Sangam 2025 event on Saturday, Goyal said it was unfortunate that such a statement had come from the CM of a state, in a country known as the 'pharmacy of the world.' He said: 'Our scientists and startups worked day and night, conducted experiments, and built two vaccines when developed nations were struggling. India didn't just protect its own people but also supplied vaccines to 150 countries, giving them free to over 100 countries.' Goyal added: 'Now, when the world is thanking India for saving lives, Siddaramaiah is insulting those efforts. Is he siding with countries that have an agenda against the Indian government? What is he trying to say? He owes a public apology.' Referring to the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, Goyal pointed out how India faced a severe shortage of PPE kits and vaccines. 'In just days, Indian startups and enterprises developed PPE kits locally and we became the second-largest producers in the world,' he said. 'When we tried to buy vaccines from abroad, we were pushed to the back of the line. Developed countries hoarded expensive vaccines. But India developed its own. Even today, people across the world thank India for saving lives,' he said, adding, 'And yet, the Chief Minister finds this a matter of shame?'
