600 mangrove trees planted along Sejingkat coastline in conservation effort
KUCHING (July 6): A total of 600 mangrove trees were planted along the Sejingkat Power Station's coastline yesterday in conjunction with the month of International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem.
The initiative, jointly undertaken by the state Forest Department and Sarawak Energy Berhad's (SEB) subsidiary, Sejingkat Power Corporation, is part of the ongoing partnership between the two parties.
'Since the collaboration in 2022, a cumulative total of almost 3,000 mangrove trees has been planted along the Sejingkat coastline, demonstrating a shared commitment to coastal conservation and environmental sustainability,' said the department in a statement.
The planting programme also aligns with SEB's Sarawak Energy Tree Planting, Protection and Habitat Restoration Campaign 2021-2030, in support of the Greening Sarawak Campaign led by the department.
Adopted by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) in 2015, the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem is celebrated on July 26 every year.
The observance aims to raise awareness of the importance of mangrove ecosystems as 'a unique, special and vulnerable ecosystem' and to promote solutions for their sustainable management, conservation and use.
As the authority responsible for the management, conservation and sustainable development of Sarawak's forest resources, the department said it will continue to play a key role in protecting coastal ecosystems.
'Through collaborative efforts such as this, we aim to safeguard biodiversity, combat erosion and strengthen the resilience of natural habitats against climate change,' said the department. coastline lead mangrove trees planted Sejingkat Power Station

Sapura Energy to convene EGM for shareholders' approval of regularisation plan
KUALA LUMPUR: Sapura Energy Bhd (SEB) will convene an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) on July 30, 2025, for shareholders to vote on its proposed regularisation plan aimed at restoring the company's financial health and exiting Practice Note 17 (PN17) status. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia today, SEB outlined four key components of the plan, which include capital reconstruction, debt restructuring, fundraising, and a proposed exemption for Malaysia Development Holding Sdn Bhd (MDH) and its partners from making a mandatory general offer. SEB said the capital reconstruction exercise involves a 99.99 per cent reduction and a 20-to-1 share consolidation, but neither exercise will affect the percentage shareholding of existing shareholders. The company also plans to reduce its borrowings from RM10.8 billion to RM5.6 billion under the debt restructuring proposal, which is expected to cut annual interest costs by 60 per cent or more than RM500 million. Meanwhile, MDH will subscribe up to RM1.1 billion in redeemable convertible loan stocks (RCLS) to help settle outstanding vendor payments in the local oil and gas ecosystem. The final component of the plan seeks to exempt MDH and its persons acting in concert from making a mandatory offer should they fully convert their RCLS. SEB said a dedicated shareholders' help desk will be set up from July 15 to assist with queries regarding the proposed regularisation plan. With shareholders' approval, the company aims to strengthen its equity position, improve liquidity and contract execution, restore market credibility, and eventually apply to exit its PN17 status upon recording two consecutive quarters of profit post-restructuring. Group chief executive officer Muhammad Zamri Jusoh described the proposals as a decisive step in shaping the company's future and determining whether it can transform into a resilient, profitable enterprise. "By addressing legacy liabilities, enhancing our equity base and securing strategic support, we are rebuilding the foundation for future profitability and shareholder returns. "We recommend that all shareholders vote in favour of these proposals and support SEB's recovery and value creation journey,' he added. - Bernama

Peace returning to Manipur as our volunteers mediate Meitei-Kuki talks: RSS
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) volunteers are making efforts to reduce tension in Manipur by promoting dialogue between the Meitei and Kuki communities, the RSS has said. The Sangh asserts that peace is gradually returning to the state, which has been embroiled in ethnic violence since May 2023. RSS national publicity and media department head Sunil Ambekar said delegates, who attended a three-day meeting of the 'prant pracharaks' here, shared information on the current situation in Manipur and 'positive' developments unfolding in the state. 'People from all over the country had come to attend the meeting. They also shared information on how 'swayamsevaks' (RSS volunteers) are trying to establish harmony there as quickly as possible, establish peace,' the senior RSS functionary told reporters on July 7, briefing on the outcomes of the meeting which concluded on Sunday. 'For this, they (RSS swayamsevaks) are promoting talks between their Meitei and Kuki communities, and all the people, so that there is a good atmosphere among them. They are trying for this,' he said. Ambekar said that the situation in Manipur has improved compared to last year. 'Many positive things came to light from their (delegates') experience. It will take some more time (for the situation to return to complete normalcy). But some positive news has been received through them (delegates who attended the RSS meeting),' he added. Replying to a question on the opposition's claim that there is no normalcy in the state, Ambekar said, "When conditions worsen anywhere, it does not get better in a day. But definitely, if we compare it with the previous years, peace has started returning to some extent. "The peace process has begun. The dialogues happening between the two sides will progress.' In a statement later, Ambekar said RSS volunteers are talking to 'both sides' (Meitei and Kuki) in their bid to restore normalcy in Manipur. 'Owing to this, positive changes can be seen on the ground,' he said. More than 260 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in ethnic violence between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups since May 2023. The Centre imposed President's rule in Manipur on February 13 after the then-chief minister, N Biren Singh, resigned. The state assembly, which has a tenure until 2027, has been suspended. On the issue of "secular and socialist" words added to the Preamble of the Constitution during the Emergency also figured in the RSS 'prant pracharaks' meeting, Ambekar said that RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale recently expressed his views on the issue, recalling atrocities carried out on the 'people in jails and the Constitution' during Emergency. "The new generation should know about this," the senior RSS functionary said. The dialogues happening between the two sides will progress. 'The circumstances under which the Constitution was amended were not right. There was no democratic situation then. Therefore, there is no closed chapter in democracy. A debate should happen on issues. It's every generation's right," he told reporters. Key Takeaways RSS volunteers are actively promoting dialogue between conflicting communities to reduce tensions. The situation in Manipur has shown signs of improvement compared to previous years. Engagement and communication are crucial steps towards restoring normalcy in conflict-affected regions.
