‘Willing to work with India': China foreign minister at SCO meet in Beijing; echoes Jaishankar's points
China is willing to work with India to handle conflicts and differences properly, the country's foreign minister Wang Yi reportedly said in a conversation with India's S Jaishankar in Beijing on Monday during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Foreign Ministers' Meeting. China's foreign minister Wang Yi spoke of the need for mutual trust with India.(AP File) Wang Yi was speaking as Jaishankar also stressed at the meeting that 'differences should not become disputes, nor should competition ever become conflict'. The Chinese minister expressed his country's willingness to 'safeguard the multilateral trading system' and thus ensure 'stability of the global production and supply chain with India'. Besides, of course, the last few years' hostilities between India and China, Wang Yi's comments come also in the backdrop of US President Donald Trump's aggressive tariff policies for his 'America First' approach. Wang Yi said of India and China that both sides should 'trust rather than suspect each other; cooperate rather than compete with each other', news agency Reuters reported. He added that the essence of the India-China equation lay in mutual success. He also reportedly told Jaishankar that both countries should make long-term plans. 'China and India should adhere to the direction of good-neighbourliness and friendship, and find a way for mutual respect and trust, peaceful coexistence, common development and win-win cooperation,' the Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported. Long-term vision in focus Earlier, India's external affairs minister S Jaishankar met Wang Yi and said the relationship requires a 'far-seeing approach'. He said that ever since Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Russia's Kazan October 2024, the ties between the countries have improved. Jaishankar said representatives of the two countries have met each other at international events and he expects that such meetings can take place in India and China itself. Both the countries have completed 75 years of diplomacy with each other, he underlined. Jaishankar brings up border issue Jaishankar also brought up the border issue, a long-standing point of contention between the two countries, during his opening remarks at the meet. He said ties between India and China have improved in the last nine months as a result of the 'resolution of friction along the border'. 'This is the fundamental basis for mutual strategic trust," he added. Jaishankar said that 'stable and constructive ties' between India and China will benefit the whole world, not just the two countries.

After a video showing eggs hurled at a rath yatra procession taken out in Canada's Toronto surfaced online, the ministry of external affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal called the incident 'regrettable' and 'against the spirit of festival'. Devotees celebrating Rath Yatra in Canada were attacked with eggs (Instagram/@DMBlSMRulis) He added that India has 'strongly' taken up the matter with Canadian authorities to hold the people responsible for the act accountable. 'We have seen reports regarding disruption created by mischievous elements during the Rath Yatra procession in Toronto. Such despicable acts are regrettable and are against the spirit of festival, which seeks to promote unity, inclusivity, and social harmony,' Randhir Jaiswal said in a statement. 'We have strongly taken up the matter with Canadian authorities to hold the perpetrators of the act accountable. We hope the Canadian Government will take necessary action to protect the religious rights of people,' he added. An Instagram user named Sangna Bajaj shared a video on Sunday showing that eggs were hurled at a rath yatra procession she was a part on in Canada's Toronto. In the video, Bajaj is seen singing and chanting devotional songs during the procession, however, as the procession moves into a less crowded area, several broken eggs can be seen scattered on the street. Bajaj claimed in the video that people from a nearby building threw the eggs on them. She added that if the intention was to stop the procession, it failed. 'We were stunned. Hurt. But we didn't stop. Because hate can never overpower faith,' she said. Bajaj attributed the incident to racism in Canada and said that it left her feeling hurt but was unable to stop the procession. 'We didn't stop. Because when Lord Jagannath is on the streets, no hate can shake us,' she wrote in the caption of her post. The video has been seen around 1.7 lakh times so far. Bajaj was part of ISKCON's 53rd annual Rath Yatra when the egg-hurling incident left participants shaken but undeterred. By ISKCON's own description, the Rath Yatra is a loud festival, where devotees gather on the streets to sing and chant bhajans.

Currency watch: Rupee ends 12 paise lower at 85.92 against dollar; FPI outflows continue
The rupee weakened by 12 paise to close at 85.92 against the US dollar on Monday, hit by rising global crude oil prices and a firm greenback, even as the Reserve Bank of India stepped in to limit losses. The domestic unit had ended at 85.80 per dollar on Friday. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 85.96 and moved in a tight band of 85.92 to 86.05 during the day before closing at 85.92. The local unit briefly slipped past the 86 mark but recouped some ground later in the session, PTI reported. Forex traders attributed the rupee's weakness to persistent foreign fund outflows, a stronger dollar index, and lack of progress in the proposed India-US bilateral trade agreement (BTA). A fresh round of BTA talks began in Washington on Monday and will continue till Thursday. 'The Indian rupee again fell as India-US trade deal was yet to be seen, while US President Donald Trump applied tariffs on the EU and Mexico, two of its biggest trading partners. The dollar index was up 0.03% at 97.82. Bhansali added, 'The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) was present to protect the rupee while FPIs, who were sellers of equity on Friday, were dollar buyers, keeping the rupee well bid for the whole day without any major correction. We expect the rupee to move between 85.75 and 86.25 on Tuesday as we await US CPI data.' On the domestic equity front, the BSE Sensex declined 247.01 points to 82,253.46 while the NSE Nifty shed 67.55 points to close at 25,082.30. Data from the commerce ministry showed wholesale price inflation (WPI) turned negative for the first time in 19 months, falling 0.13% in June on account of softening food and fuel prices and easing costs of manufactured products. Meanwhile, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) pulled out Rs 1,614.32 crore from Indian equities on Monday, as per exchange data. India's forex reserves declined by $3.049 billion to $699.736 billion in the week ended July 4, according to RBI data released on Friday.
