A pair of youths were out on an afternoon joyride in two allegedly stolen vehicles when they were caught by police.
Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said police were called about a pair of teenagers who had stolen two vehicles and taken them on joyrides around the city.
Starting in the late afternoon on Friday, the pair first entered a hardware store in Andersons Bay and allegedly stole a screwdriver.
They headed to Bridgman St, Kensington, where the teens stole a Nissan Tiida.
The pair allegedly took the Tiida on a city-wide joyride, before dumping the car and stealing a Toyota Vitz from the Green Island area.
After driving around in the Vitz, they dumped it in the Andersons Bay area, Snr Sgt Bond said.
Police were called and located the pair at about 5.45pm.
''They've been spoken to and followed up with by Youth Aid due to their ages,'' Snr Sgt Bond said.
At midnight on Saturday, police arrested a 32-year-old man in Maitland St and charged him with unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, receiving stolen property and driving while disqualified.
He received a stolen Honda Civic on April 17, and stole a second Honda Civic on April 24.
The man would appear in Dunedin District Court this morning.

Eight cars stolen as youths lead police on high-speed chase up coast

Two teens and their 11-year-old friend spent their Sunday going on an almost 190kmh crime spree up and down the Otago coast, where they stole eight cars and evaded police spikes. The trio allegedly stole cars and dumped them, before eventually taking one on a joyride from Dunedin to Palmerston. On that leg they repeatedly dodged police road spikes, Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said. The alleged crime spree started when 16-year-old and another 15-year-old both made their way from the Christchurch area to Oamaru, at some point during the weekend, and linked up with their 11-year-old associate. Once arrested, the 16-year-old passed himself off as a 12-year-old and made it all the way back to Rolleston before his ruse was uncovered and he was charged. At 9.15am on Sunday, police were notified of a Subaru being stolen from an Oamaru address — allegedly by the three youths — and was later found dumped in Pine Hill, Dunedin. Over the course of Sunday, the trio allegedly stole three further cars from the Pine Hill area, one from the Opoho area, another from the Andersons Bay area, and they attempted to steal another but failed to do so. They also conducted a drive-off from an Andersons Bay Rd petrol station where they stole $150 worth of petrol. At about 1.20pm on Sunday, the three youths stole a Toyota Mark X from Gladstone Rd, Dalmore, and took it joyriding north up State Highway One. The vehicle was spotted by officers on patrol, who signalled for the car to pull over. However, the three youths took off down Coast Rd, on the way to Karitane. The trio were speeding in the vehicle, reaching speeds between 130kmh and 150kmh, conducting dangerous overtaking, and driving dangerously. Police did not pursue the vehicle due to the manner of driving, but attempted to set up road spikes at different points. At about 1.30pm, police attempted to stop the vehicle using road spikes near the Karitane township, however, the teenagers evaded police and the spikes and headed north again up State Highway One. The trio went through Palmerston and police again attempted to spike the vehicle at Shag Point. The teenagers spotted police and spikes, turned around, and headed back to Palmerston, where more road spikes had been set up. They again evaded the spikes and headed up the back roads around the Palmerston township. The vehicle was later found crashed in the area. A member of the public eventually located the three, picked them up, and dropped them off in Palmerston where they were arrested by police. When back at the station, the 16-year-old — who allegedly was the driver — gave police false details and claimed he was a 12-year-old. ''We didn't initially charge him because you can't charge those under 14 unless it's really serious offending, so we have dealt with him as a 12-year-old,'' Snr Sgt Bond said. Police also do not keep photographs or fingerprints of 12-year-olds on file, he said. The 16-year-old was returned to Otago Oranga Tamariki custody. However, because they were Dunedin social workers, they did not have his details and could not verify his age. He was eventually returned to Rolleston, where he was identified by a Canterbury social worker as a 16-year-old. He was then arrested, Snr Sgt Bond said. The 16-year-old would be appearing in Christchurch Youth Court and the 11-year-old was being followed up with by youth aid. The 15-year-old was arrested and has initially been charged with unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle. He would appear in Dunedin Youth Court on July 31. ''We are interested in any dashcam footage for motorists that were travelling along State Highway 1 yesterday and any CCTV from in and around the locations that the cars were stolen or recovered,'' Snr Sgt Bond said.

Christchurch man jailed for years of sexual abuse, exploitation

By Al Williams, Open Justice reporter Warning: This story contains details of sexual offending against a child and may be upsetting A teenager with a head injury who suffered years of sexual abuse says he is angry and hoped the man responsible will be jailed for 'a long time'. This month, the teen and his father confronted Shane Bell in court, telling him that other young people should not have to go through what the teen had. 'I find it hard at times to express myself,' the teen told the court. 'I am angry with him, with what he did to me.' He said Bell's actions had made him feel insecure. 'I could not trust other men, I thought they would do the same. I think he should go to jail for a long time - other teenagers should not have to go through this.' Bell, 49, sat expressionless in the Christchurch District Court as the teen and his father, flanked by supporters, struggled to contain their emotions at times during the sentencing hearing. The boy's father said he had a lot of trust in Bell being around his son. 'I don't have any trust in him now after what he has done to my son. I don't even like talking about him, as it makes me angry, what [he did] to my son. 'It has made me mindful of who I allow around my other kids, as I don't want this to happen to any of them. It has become a very traumatic experience.' He added that the experience 'has made me closer to my son, which I am grateful for'. The boy's father said the abuse had taken a toll on his family as they had to deal with residual trauma. The court heard the victim was extremely vulnerable, with a head injury, and Bell had taken advantage of him. A pre-sentence report indicated Bell was at high risk of reoffending, with distorted thinking and no display of remorse. Alongside charges of sexual connection with a young person and indecent acts with a young person, Bell faced charges of possessing hundreds of objectionable publications and making an objectionable publication that involved the victim. He would look after the victim, who would often spend time at Bell's house and stay overnight. Over 18 months, he performed sex acts on the boy and told him not to tell anyone. The victim was too scared to reveal what was happening. The boy told Bell it was illegal and tried to get away from him once, but Bell held him down. The victim believed Bell had committed the sex acts on him about 50 times. Bell also supplied the boy with cannabis and alcohol. Bell came to the attention of Polish authorities via a cellphone that had received child exploitation material, and in early 2023 the information was passed on to New Zealand police, who executed a search warrant on his home, seizing several devices. More than 1000 files were found on his laptop and cellphone, images involving young boys in a variety of sexual acts and a large array of animals being sexually violated. Bell's web history showed more than 100 searches for child exploitation material and bestiality. Also on his phone were photographs and videos of Bell and the victim. Judge Gerard Lynch described the offending as deplorable, vile and degrading. The judge said Bell had told authorities that if the victim had been unhappy with the offending, he would not have visited his home. Bell's main concern while in custody was with the wellbeing of his cats, Judge Lynch said. Bell was at high risk without treatment, and it had been noted that an intensive sexual treatment programme would be vital. Judge Lynch did not accept Bell's apology and sentenced him to six years and three months' jail. Bell was also placed on the Child Sex Offenders Register as part of his sentencing.
