Group of young people arrested over arsons in Canterbury

Police were alerted to three separate reports of arson around the Rolleston Reserve area over the past week. The group were taken into custody following police enquiries and a review of CCTV footage. They have all been referred to Youth Aid.

Photo: supplied Three Dunedin teenagers and an 11-year-old driving the wrong way on the motorway had allegedly spent almost 12 hours joyriding in stolen cars and committing petrol drive offs. The four were stopped travelling the wrong direction in the northbound lane of the motorway near Saddle Hill at 12.14am this morning, Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said. They had earlier come to the attention of police after an alleged a petrol drive off from Z Andersons Bay. The group, which included an 11-year-old boy, two 16-year-old girls and a 15-year-old girl, had been spotted by police in Victoria Rd in a Mazda Demio reported stolen from an Opoho address earlier in the day. When they were stopped near midnight, the 15-year-old girl was driving, and all four were taken to the station. While speaking to the young people with parents and nominated people present, police discovered the crew had also allegedly stolen a Mazda Familia from the Golden Centre Carpark at about 2.50pm yesterday. The 15-year-old was the driver in both the stolen cars. They had allegedly committed another petrol drive off earlier in the day from the same petrol station, Snr Sgt Bond said. The two 16-year-olds were charged with unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle, and the 11-year-old was charged with unlawfully taking a motor vehicle. All three were referred to Youth Aid. The 15-year-old received two charges of unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, two charges of theft, and underwent breath testing procedures. She recorded a breath alcohol level of 150mcg. She would appear in Dunedin Youth Court on Monday.

Person arrested after Napier Pharmacy break-in
Life Pharmacy in Napier. Photo: Google Maps Street View Police have arrested one person after a Napier Pharmacy was broken into for a third time in just 10 weeks. Police said two offenders used a weapon to break into the store at 2.30am on Monday and took several items, including expensive perfumes. Officers found a vehicle shortly after the incident which contained the stolen items. Pharmacy owner Peter Bailey has worked at the store for 45 years. He said he's had to replace the shopfront three times since the break-ins, costing him an estimated $30,000. "Our insurance company isn't going to be very happy, I can see our premiums going through the roof - it just makes it tougher in a tough environment." He said the thefts left him "a bit stressed and emotional", but was thankful for the Napier community that had supported him and other staff members. "We had a gentleman drop in a $50 coffee voucher for the staff." A young person was referred to Youth Aid and the items had since been returned to the store. Youths take joyride in allegedly stolen vehicles
Photo: File A pair of youths were out on an afternoon joyride in two allegedly stolen vehicles when they were caught by police. Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said police were called about a pair of teenagers who had stolen two vehicles and taken them on joyrides around the city. Starting in the late afternoon on Friday, the pair first entered a hardware store in Andersons Bay and allegedly stole a screwdriver. They headed to Bridgman St, Kensington, where the teens stole a Nissan Tiida. The pair allegedly took the Tiida on a city-wide joyride, before dumping the car and stealing a Toyota Vitz from the Green Island area. After driving around in the Vitz, they dumped it in the Andersons Bay area, Snr Sgt Bond said. Police were called and located the pair at about 5.45pm. ''They've been spoken to and followed up with by Youth Aid due to their ages,'' Snr Sgt Bond said. At midnight on Saturday, police arrested a 32-year-old man in Maitland St and charged him with unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, receiving stolen property and driving while disqualified. He received a stolen Honda Civic on April 17, and stole a second Honda Civic on April 24. The man would appear in Dunedin District Court this morning.
