AIMPLB temporarily halts Waqf Act protests following Pahalgam terror attack

Hans India23-04-2025
New Delhi: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) on Wednesday announced a temporary halt to its protest campaign against the amendments to the Waqf Act in the wake of the terrorist attack in Jammu & Kashmir's Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of at least 26 people and left 17 others critically injured.
In a statement, the AIMPLB expressed its deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the families of the victims.
'As a mark of solidarity with the bereaved families, the Board has decided to suspend its campaign against the amendments to the Waqf Act for three days,' the statement read.
Dr S.Q.R. Ilyas, National Convener of the Majlis-e-Amal for the Protection of Waqf under the AIMPLB, strongly condemned the attack, calling it a 'deeply tragic and inhuman act of terror.'
He added that such violence not only devastates families but also disrupts social harmony and peace.
"In light of this tragedy, the Board is observing a three-day mourning period by pausing all protest activities under the Waqf Protection Campaign," Dr Ilyas said.
A circular has been issued to all state and district-level conveners of the campaign, instructing them to suspend protest programmes and public mobilisations during this period.
Dr Ilyas emphasised that the suspension is temporary and the campaign will resume once the mourning period concludes.
The terror attack -- the deadliest in the Valley since the 2019 Pulwama strike -- occurred on Tuesday at Baisaran, a scenic meadow in Anantnag district accessible only on foot or by pony. A group of tourists visiting the area was targeted.
The Resistance Front, a shadow outfit of the banned Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility for the attack. An official government confirmation is awaited.
Condemning the attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who cut short his Saudi Arabia visit to return and take stock of the situation, said those behind this 'heinous act will be brought to justice and will not be spared.'

Accused No 27: ‘Transported 50 kg gold' and more, what chargesheets against Nirav Modi's brother Nehal say

Born and raised in Belgium's Antwerp, Nehal Deepak Modi is a high-profile diamond merchant, a global citizen fluent in English, Gujarati and Hindi, and fugitive fraudster now arrested in the US on India's request. Nehal Modi, 46, is a Belgian citizen, seen here in an image from some years ago.(X/@SunilKu94764515) He is also Accused Number 27 in a chargesheet by India's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) that accuses him of destroying evidence to cover up a criminal conspiracy. At the core of this conspiracy is his brother Nirav Modi, who is in jail in the UK, and over ₹13,000 crore in fraudulent loans taken from the government-run Punjab National Bank (PNB). Also read: Who is Nehal Modi, arrested in US? His loan-and-pawn diamond fraud runs wide US authorities have arrested Nehal, 46, eight years younger to brother Nirav, on extradition pleas by India's Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), officials said on Saturday. His next hearing is on July 17, when he may seek bail, which is expected to be opposed by US prosecutors, officials said, according to news agency PTI. In the proceedings in the US, two charges are primary: of money laundering and criminal conspiracy. The investigation agencies say Nirav Modi had, through his companies, embezzled ₹6,498 crore from PNB, while the remaining amount was misappropriated by his uncle Mehul Choksi in a similar modus operandi. 'Forced directors to lie, relocate' Nehal laundered the proceeds of the crime on behalf of Nirav through a web of shell companies and offshore transactions, as per the ED. He transported 50 kg of gold and 'substantial' cash from Dubai, the chargesheet says. In a supplementary chargesheet submitted by the CBI, he is 'accused number 27' for destroying evidence in Dubai. The CBI says Nehal Modi intimidated directors of Dubai-based shell companies used by Nirav Modi to 'give a veneer of legitimacy' to a fraudulent trade, PTI has reported. These 'intimidated' people, employees of Nirav Modi's companies, were 'coerced' into relocating from Dubai to Cairo, during which their phones, laptops and computer servers were destroyed to erase evidence.

Court declares arms dealer Sanjay Bhandari 'fugitive economic offender'

A Delhi court on Saturday officially declared UK-based arms dealer Sanjay Bhandari a "fugitive economic offender". This was done in response to a plea by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), according to a report by the Press Trust of India, quoting officials. The ruling was made under the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act (FEOA), 2018. The FEOA was introduced in 2018 by the Modi government to deal with economic offenders who flee the country after committing financial frauds involving sums over ₹100 crore. In February 2017, the ED registered a money laundering case against Bhandari and others. This was based on a charge sheet earlier filed by the Income Tax department under the Black Money (Undisclosed Foreign Income and Assets) and Imposition of Tax Act, 2015. A formal charge sheet was later submitted by the ED in 2020. Bhandari, aged 63, left for London shortly after the I-T department raided his premises in Delhi in 2016. The ED's case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) followed soon after. Alleged links to Robert Vadra Investigations have also focused on Bhandari's alleged ties to Robert Vadra, husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. In a supplementary charge sheet filed in 2023, the ED claimed Bhandari bought a house at 12, Bryanston Square, London in 2009 and renovated it 'as per the directions of Robert Vadra and the funds for renovation were provided by Robert Vadra'. Vadra has strongly denied any involvement, saying he has never owned any property in London, directly or indirectly. He described the allegations as a 'political witch-hunt' and stated he was being 'hounded and harassed' for political reasons. Last month, he received fresh summons in relation to the ED's 2023 charge sheet. Accused of hiding overseas assets Bhandari, who was considered a tax resident of India in 2015, is accused of concealing foreign assets, using backdated documents, and misleading Indian tax authorities by claiming he held no assets abroad. However, he has denied all such allegations. Opposing the ED's plea to label Bhandari a fugitive, his lawyer argued, 'Client's stay could not be called illegal in the UK as he has a legal right to reside in the UK and the GOI is bound by the judgment of the UK court... Bhandari is legally living there, and declaring him a 'fugitive' in that scenario is legally wrong.' The ED has attached Bhandari's assets worth around ₹21 crore under the PMLA. 16th declared fugitive economic offender With this declaration, Bhandari becomes the 16th person to be named a fugitive economic offender by Indian courts. Others on the list include Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi.

UK arms dealer Sanjay Bhandari declared fugitive by court in money laundering case

A Delhi court has declared UK-based arms dealer and defence consultant Sanjay Bhandari a Fugitive Economic Offender (FEO) under the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act, 2018. The declaration comes on the basis of a plea filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a high-stakes black money and money laundering opposed the ED's application, arguing that his continued stay in the United Kingdom was lawful and protected, citing a decision by the London High Court that denied India's extradition request. His legal team contended that in light of this ruling, he could not be classified as a fugitive under Indian law. However, the Delhi court rejected his arguments and ruled in favour of the ED, paving the way for the confiscation of his assets in India and a controversial figure in India's defence and arms lobby circles, is also accused in a money laundering case involving Robert Vadra, the son-in-law of Congress leader Sonia Gandhi. The case pertains to alleged kickbacks and illicit overseas property transactions, which the ED claims were part of a complex web of financial crime. He lived in India till 2015 and allegedly fled to England after legal actions were initiated against him for owing a large amount of Income Tax. Bhandari first came under the scanner in 2016 after Income Tax raids at his premises revealed classified defence documents and evidence of undisclosed foreign assets. Subsequent probes linked him to a series of offshore entities and unaccounted wealth, with alleged connections to defence procurement deals. He reportedly acted as a middleman and consultant for various foreign arms manufacturers seeking contracts with the Indian the court now declaring him a fugitive economic offender, the ED is expected to intensify efforts to attach and seize Bhandari's known properties and financial interests. The ruling is also likely to strengthen India's diplomatic and legal arguments in any future appeal or extradition review proceedings in the UK.- Ends
