Max Dowman's behaviour jumps out as Arsenal wonderkid's character comes to light
Arsenal starlet Max Dowman's character stood out from his team-mates even during his early days at the club's academy. Dowman has been a breakout star during the Gunners' pre-season tour, despite being just 15 years old.
The attacking midfielder is the only one of the several unproven youngsters in manager Mikel Arteta's pre-season squad to have featured in all three of the side's friendlies. Dowman made his first team debut in a win over AC Milan before impressing against Newcastle United and earning the winning penalty.
He replaced Bukayo Saka in Arsenal's recent defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, apt considering Dowman's behaviour has drawn comparisons to the Hale End graduate. Former Arsenal academy coach Temisan Williams previously worked with Dowman and highlighted a moment that summed up his humble personality.
'When I left Arsenal, Max was one of the few players who personally said to me, 'Thank you for everything you've done for me, how you've helped me, what I've learned from you and I wish you all the best,'' Williams recalled to Sky Sports. 'I always remember this – and these behaviours are recognised by coaches in players.
'He was just a very measured young man, definitely mature beyond his years, even when you were talking with him one-on-one. Whenever you're talking to him, he'd look into your eyes and he'd really want to understand.
''What is it that you want me to know, what is it you want me to do, how are you going to help me, how is this going to help my development?''
Dowman has clearly heeded all advice from his coaches as he continues to excel above his age group, having been called up to train with Arteta's side in November. He scored 15 goals in as many league games for Arsenal's under-18s side last season, as well as becoming the youngest-ever goalscorer in the U19 UEFA Youth League, aged 14.
However, despite his eye for goal and talent for dribbling with the ball, Dowman's approach to his team-mates most impressed Williams, a quality that has likely helped him adapt during his step up into the first team.
'He was a brilliant team-mate,' Williams explained. 'I always look at when things are going wrong in development football – when things aren't coming off for players and they're maybe frustrated, losing, all that type of stuff.
'I'd look at Max's reaction, he would always be encouraging his team-mates. You'd never see him dig out a player in a very rash way or complain at players. I'm sure if you asked anyone who's trained and played with him through the academy, they'd probably echo the same sentiments.'
Arsenal boss Arteta showed willingness to integrate academy prospects into his title-chasing squad last season, with Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri becoming first-team regulars. Dowman is in the pre-season squad alongside 15-year-old Marli Salmon, 17-year-old striker Andre Harriman-Annous and other youngsters, becoming the latest academy stars on the verge of a breakthrough.
Discussing Dowman's display against Newcastle, Arteta said: 'It is special. What he's done today against this team in the time that he had on the pitch, it is something certainly not common to witness for a 15-year-old. We are extremely happy to have him.'
It remains to be seen whether Dowman will continue to link up with the senior side once the season gets underway, given his lack of experience at Premier League 2 level. However, his former coach Williams has little doubt about the levels Dowman could reach in the future.
' Champions League, World Cup, Premier League,' Williams concluded. 'He's got all the capabilities; he's got the mentality. Mikel Arteta wouldn't bring him into the fold at that age if he didn't.'

How much every Premier League club charge for shirts as eye-watering prices rocket
Premier League clubs, including Manchester United and Arsenal, are charging a staggering £85 for their latest kit, with fans facing another hike - and families hit hardest Millions of football fans are facing a hike in the cost of replica shirts this season - with families hardest hit. Premier League giants including manchester -united-fc> Manchester United and Arsenal, are charging a staggering £85 for their latest kit. The mega wealthy clubs have both slapped £5 on to the price of their shirts, amid calls to stop pushing fans' loyalty. Man City, Newcastle Utd, Liverpool and Aston Villa have also increased prices by the same amount, the equivalent of six per cent. Tottenham froze its shirt price at £85, while Chelsea froze prices at £84.99. In total, 11 clubs have hiked prices of adult shirts this season, according to official club websites. Everton, Brighton, Brentford and Crystal Palace raised prices by £5, while Wolves added a modest £2 to their shirts. Wolves and Premier League new boys Burnley and Sunderland are charging fans the lowest amounts for shirts, all priced at £60. Everton, Tottenham and Chelsea are selling the most expensive kids' shirts. Everton increased the junior price by £10, taking the cost to £65, the equivalent of an 18 per cent price rise. Tottenham froze prices at £65, while Chelsea froze this season's child shirt price at £64.99. Arsenal, Aston Villa, Man Utd, Leeds United and Crystal Palace have all increased prices by £5. At the other end of the spectrum, Brentford and Wolves have the cheapest shirts, priced at £45. The average price of a Premier league kids shirt has reached £56.25 .Inflation-busting price rises are fuelling a black market in fake shirts. They are sold openly via social media, including one site called DHGate. Newcastle Utd fan James Smith, 37, of Consett, Co Durham, was at St James Park with children Freddie, 10, and Elsie, eight, this weekend. He said: "I don't know many people who are willing to pay £70 or £80 for a shirt when you can get a fake one for £15. "I think most fans would be prepared to pay £50 for a shirt and maybe £35 for a junior kit. Many people get the retro shirts these days but even more are going to DHGate. They are selling them for £15 and there is still a margin for profit for them. "The only way you get a genuine one these days is as a gift for Christmas or birthdays. They are just too much for ordinary fans, especially if you have kids. People also buy the away or third choice kit as they don't change as often." Claire Nicholl, a university education manager, has just bought the new Newcastle United kit for her son Jack, 17. Both are loyal season ticket holders but Claire said: "You pick them up and think 'I am not paying that'. If you get a name of a player on the back then it is even more. "But we have done that before and it is no good when the players are sold. We are true Newcastle supporters and season ticket holders. It would be different if the money for the shirts was going to the club to improve the stadium, or to sign players. But it is not." Brentford's new kit has a one year-cycle, after previously running a two-year cycle, the only club in the Premier league to do so. This year, the club's home kit celebrates 100 years of red and white, and the club's partnership with front of shirt sponsor, Hollywoodbets, will end after 2025/26, in line with the Premier League's voluntary ban on front-of-shirt gambling sponsors. It is understood the club intends to return to a two-year cycle, to keep their kits affordable and sustainable, subject to partnership agreements. Stadia Agency, a sports digital PR company, has spent months researching the black market in football shirts for Casino Kings, betting partners of Wigan Athletic and Hartlepool Utd. They found the average discount is 82.7 per cent on this season's adult shirt, or £62 off, and 76.1 per cent or £43 on the kids' version. Several clubs, including Man City Newcastle, now sell the version of the shirt worn by players on the pitch; it costs £120 for the Toon top. It costs another £38 for the shorts, and £20 for the socks in the official Newcastle Utd club shop. The Magpies' green away shirt with the Premier League badge added is £95; it is £111 with a player's name on the back; the women's team replica shirt is £85. One seller told would-be buyers on DHGate: "Only £14. Don't pay Spurs £85!" Fake Manchester United shirts were being offered online for 15 US dollars, the equivalent of £11.63. One fan posted a Red Devils shirt with the name on the back, selling for £140. He told his followers: "And you wonder why people go to other sites." Newcastle is donating £5 from every adult shirt sold via official channels before the end of August to the Newcastle United Foundation, to boost grassroots and social impact initiatives across the North East. The Premier League has no control over pricing at individual clubs; their spokesperson declined to comment as did a spokesperson for Newcastle United. ‘Not funny': Sex toy tossed on WNBA court for second time this week
A sex toy was tossed onto the court during a WNBA game for the second time this week. Video showed the sex toy out of bounds under a basket after a whistle was blown to stop play during the third quarter of the Golden State Valkyries' 73-66 victory over the Chicago Sky. An official then kicked it aside before it was picked up and removed. 'It's super disrespectful,' Sky center Elizabeth Williams said in the postgame press conference. 'I don't really get the point of it. It's really immature. Whoever is doing it needs to grow up.' A similar incident occurred Tuesday during the Valkyries' 77-75 victory over the Atlanta Dream in College Park, Georgia. Weird but true 🧐: The Golden State Valkyries 🟣⚫️⚔️ are now 2-0 when a bein green dildo has been thrown on the court 'I mean, first of all, it was super dangerous,' Valkyries forward Cecilia Zandalasini said after Tuesday's game. 'And then when we found out what it was, I guess we just started laughing. I've never seen anything like that. I'm just glad we worked through that situation. We stayed locked in, we stayed concentrated.' New York Liberty forward Isabelle Harrison commented on social media about the situation Friday. 'ARENA SECURITY?! Hello??!' Harrison said on X. 'Please do better. It's not funny. Never was funny. Throwing ANYTHING on the court is so dangerous.' Among the other players to address the safety risk was Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, who said: 'stop throwing dildos on the court… you're going to hurt one of us.'
