MSEDCL
during the monsoon, warning that power grid failures could trap trains inside tunnels.
Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd managing director Santosh Kumar Jha said, "The CM has taken the matter seriously and directed MSEDCL to act accordingly.
"
The entire KR route was electrified in 2022, and trains now operate on 25 kV electric traction. KR is on high alert with the monsoon timetable in effect from June 15 to Oct 20 — the duration has been reduced by 15 days compared to previous years. Sectional speeds are adjusted to ensure safety during this period of challenging weather.
KRCL has intensified pre-monsoon measures, including extensive cleaning of drains and cuttings and execution of geo-safety works to prevent boulder falls and soil slips.
ha said that 24x7 control rooms are operational in Belapur, Ratnagiri, and Madgaon throughout the monsoon. Medical teams are positioned at Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Verna, Madgaon, Karwar, and Udupi to handle any emergencies. Over 630 trained personnel will patrol vulnerable zones, supported by RMVs at nine key locations and excavator-mounted wagons at strategic points.
Accident Relief Medical Vans with OTs are deployed at Ratnagiri and Verna.
An Accident Relief Train (ART) is also stationed at Verna for rapid response. LED signals, self-recording rain gauges at nine stations, flood alert systems at key bridges, and anemometers at viaducts and major bridges help monitor rainfall and wind. Walkie-talkies, satellite phones, VHF sets, and 1-km interval EMC sockets ensure seamless communication.

Medical aspirants, parents write to Maharashtra govt; oppose EWS quota in private medical colleges
Days after the Maharashtra government's decision to extend the 10 per cent Economically Weaker Section (EWS) reservation to private medical colleges came to light, medical aspirants and their parents have started sending emails to Maharashtra Medical Education Minister Hasan Mushrif, requesting him to revoke the decision. The content of the letters is more or less the same, with the mailers citing Supreme Court rulings that stated seats can be reserved for the EWS category without affecting seats of any other category. '…there was a commitment by (the) Central Government to increase seats by 25 per cent to implement this 10 per cent EWS quota. So how is your Government not complying with the Central rule and Supreme Court verdict?' the letters stated. The letters further said, 'Students have to burn midnight oil to crack these entrance exams and sometimes have to repeat multiple times to reach that score of a suitable seat. This decision of yours puts the middle-class general category students at a disadvantage, who are unable to obtain (an) EWS certificate due to various reasons.' Aspirants and parents claimed that the reduction in the number of merit-based seats due to the implementation of the EWS quota will result in a steep increase in cut-off scores. The emails, with the subject line – 'Request to Revoke 10 per cent EWS in Private Medical Colleges of Maharashtra' – will also be sent to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and both Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, among others.

CM Fadnavis directs formation of committee to explore use of solar power in textiles sector
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday directed the establishment of a committee comprising the textiles and energy departments to explore the use of solar power in the textiles sector to solve the power supply-related problems. Further, he instructed that a uniform criterion should be set for providing financial assistance to new cooperative spinning mills under the Social Justice, Tribal Development and Other Backward Classes Welfare Departments, saying that each department should make additional provision for the spinning mills under their jurisdiction. He chaired the review meeting of the textiles department, which was attended by Textiles Minister Sanjay Savkare, Legislative Council member Amrish Patel and senior officers from various departments. CM Fadnavis said that while extending the interest subsidy scheme on loans to cooperative spinning mills, they should be modernised and graded. A report should be prepared on the reopening of closed mills under the National Textile Corporation in the state. On that basis, action should be taken to submit a proposal to the Central Government for the reopening of closed mills. "Necessary amendments should be made in the Integrated and Sustainable Textile Policy 2023-28. Along with this, a policy should be prepared regarding the recovery of government dues from cooperative spinning mills and cooperative power loom institutions. Further, the process of registering all power looms in the state should be completed. The process of obtaining a no-objection certificate from the Maharashtra State Khadi Village Industries Board for the repair of the building used by the Silk Directorate in Pune and the creation of other facilities should be completed immediately," instructed CM Fadnavis. He also reviewed various issues relating to the creation of a new Maharashtra State Textiles Development Corporation, merger of Textiles Commissionerate and Silk Directorate to form Textiles and Silk Commissionerate, plan to allow sale of additional land from cooperative spinning mills, preparation of a new scheme for providing rehabilitation loans to spinning mills and a scheme for leasing spinning mills, action to revise the project report value of cooperative spinning mills from Rs 80.90 crore to Rs 118 crore and permanent acquisition of leased land from the Red Cross Society at Wai in Satara district for the District Silk Office. --IANS sj/uk

Over 14,000 men received payout under Maharashtra's women-only Ladki Bahin scheme
More than 14,000 men have fraudulently claimed benefits under Maharashtra's women-only Ladki Bahin Yojana, a state government report has shown, highlighting massive systemic failures in a scheme credited with helping the Mahayuti coalition secure electoral victory last year. The Ladki Bahin Yojana was a game-changer for the Mahayuti coalition, helping them sweep to power in last year's assembly election.( Praful Gangurde /Hindustan Times) The Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Scheme, which provides ₹1,500 monthly to eligible women aged 21-65 from low-income families, has lost ₹1,640 crore to ineligible beneficiaries over the past 12 months, according to the latest scrutiny report by the state women and child development department. Of this staggering amount, ₹21.44 crore went to 14,298 men who misrepresented their identities to enrol in the scheme designed exclusively for women's health, nutrition and general well-being. These fraudulent male beneficiaries received payments for 10 months before being detected and had their accounts frozen. The scheme, announced on June 28, 2024, ahead of the November assembly elections, proved politically transformative for the Mahayuti government. Before the polls, the state had already disbursed ₹7,500 to 23.4 million women, helping the coalition sweep to power. However, the programme's rapid implementation has come at enormous cost. The state currently spends ₹3,700 crore monthly to support 24.1 million beneficiaries, while struggling with widespread eligibility violations that have exposed serious governance gaps. The largest fraud involves 797,000 women who enrolled as third family members despite the scheme limiting eligibility to two women per household. This violation alone cost the exchequer ₹1,196 crore over the past year. Additionally, 287,000 beneficiaries were over 65 years—who should have been enrolled in different schemes—received payments for 10 months, causing a ₹431.70 crore loss. Another 162,000 women from families owning four-wheelers were incorrectly enrolled despite income restrictions. Concerns about the scheme's integrity emerged soon after implementation. In December 2024, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered a comprehensive review of beneficiary lists. This was followed in January by women and child development minister Aditi Tatkare announcing that the government would begin weeding out ineligible beneficiaries. The clean-up gained momentum in February when the department dropped 500,000 ineligible beneficiaries. The latest scrutiny report covering the past 10 months has now revealed the full extent of fraudulent enrolments across multiple categories. Department officials acknowledge the scale of fraud is 'shocking' and attribute much of it to the online registration process that enabled fraudulent enrolment without adequate verification. 'Physical scrutiny of applications at the ground level is necessary,' said one official, speaking on condition of anonymity. The department now plans to engage the income tax department to cross-verify eligibility, as only families earning up to ₹2.5 lakh annually qualify for benefits. Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar has promised strict action against male fraudsters. 'The Ladki Bahin scheme is for needy women from lower income groups, not for men. The state government will recover the money from men who received benefits. If they don't cooperate, we will take strict action,' he said. Women and child development minister Aditi Tatkare said, 'As of now payment benefits to 2.6 million ineligible beneficiaries have been stopped... The nature of action against those who misled the government to take benefits will be decided after discussion with chief minister and the deputy chief ministers.'
