Days after row over mobile game, Kokate stripped of Agri portfolio, moved to Sports
Kokate, a senior leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), has now been assigned the Youth Welfare, Sports and Minority Development department, while NCP minister Dattatraya Bharne, who previously held it has been appointed agriculture minister.
The reshuffle came following mounting pressure from the Opposition, which had demanded Kokate's resignation over the viral video.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar submitted the reshuffle proposal to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis Thursday morning. Sources said the decision was expedited to contain further damage to the government's image.
The controversy also found a mention in Tuesday's state cabinet meeting, where CM Fadnavis issued a stern warning to his council of ministers. Without naming Kokate, he cautioned ministers against 'indulging in conduct that embarrasses the government' and added that repeated controversies were providing unnecessary ammunition to the Opposition and distracting from the administration's achievements.
On July 20, the purported video of Kokate playing an online card game on his phone in the Legislative Assembly was put out on social media by Nationalist Congress Party (SP) leader Rohit Pawar.
However, Kokate denied the allegation and said, 'I was not playing Rummy… I was trying to watch YouTube to find out what was happening in the Lower House. Someone had downloaded the game on the phone, and I was just trying to skip it. The video might be from when I was trying to close it.'
On Wednesday, Rohit Pawar claimed that Kokate played Rummy in the House for much longer than he had claimed.
In a social media post, Rohit Pawar said, 'The Agriculture Minister was not playing Rummy for just 42 seconds but for 18 to 22 minutes. This has become clear from the probe report of the state legislature. This report has been submitted to the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister. Will the government clarify about it?'
A day later, Kokate was removed from his post.

BJP criticises NCP-SCP over Jitendra Awhad's controversial remarks on Sanatan Dharma
New Delhi, Aug 3 (UNI) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today criticised Nationalist Congress Party–Sharadchandra Pawar (NCP-SCP) leader Jitendra Awhad over his remarks describing Sanatan Dharma as having 'destroyed India.' Such comments attack the very fabric of Indian civilisation, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said at a press conference here, and questioned whether such a position reflected the official stance of the NCP-SCP. Patra commented, 'We are a tolerant society, and that is precisely why we are expressing our protest through a press conference. Had such a statement been made about Islam and Muslims, the response would not have been as restrained.' Patra also directed pointed questions at NCP-SCP chief Sharad Pawar and party MP Supriya Sule, asking whether Awhad's controversial remarks represented the party's official ideology or were merely his personal views. 'He has spoken against the core values of India. I would like to ask Sharad Pawar and his daughter, Supriya Sule, if they endorse this statement,' he said. Patra further observed, 'nowhere else in the world do we see a situation where the majority population is openly accused and then simultaneously labelled as intolerant.' Awhad had sparked a controversy after stating that Sanatan Dharma had 'ruined India' and terming its ideology as 'perverted.' His remarks came in the aftermath of a special NIA court acquitting all seven accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case — a development that has reignited political discourse surrounding the notion of 'saffron terror.' It may be mentioned that, at a public interaction, Awhad had asserted that Sanatan Dharma had historically marginalised key figures of social reform. 'There was never any religion called Sanatan Dharma. We are followers of Hindu Dharma. This so-called Sanatan Dharma denied Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj his coronation and defamed Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Its followers attempted to assassinate Jyotirao Phule and humiliated Savitribai Phule,' he said. The BJP leader also referred to Dr. BR Ambedkar's criticism of the Manusmriti and the caste-based oppression allegedly embedded in Sanatan Dharma. 'It was this same tradition that denied Ambedkar the right to education and even access to water. It was Babasaheb who rose against Sanatan Dharma, burned the Manusmriti, and rejected its oppressive traditions,' Awhad said. The BJP has called for a clarification from the NCP-SCP leadership, maintaining that such remarks are inflammatory and disregard the sentiments of the Hindu majority. UNI AJ AKT SSP

Shiv Sena (UBT) & MNS tieup likely for Mumbai only & not for other civic bodies in Maharashtra, predicts Bhujbal
Nashik: Senior NCP minister Chhagan Bhujbal has said there is a "distinct possibility" that the Shiv Sena (UBT) and the MNS will join hands to contest the forthcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls only. "My assessment, based on the feedback that I have been receiving, is that the pre-poll understanding between the two Thackeray cousins will be only for the civic polls in Mumbai. It is unlikely that they will have a tie up for the civic polls in other cities like Pune, Nashik etc," Bhujbal told TOI. "At this juncture it is too early to predict whether the coming together of the Thackeray cousins would adversely impact the Mahayuti in the BMC polls. The top brass of the three ruling alliance partners in the state are aware of the developments. They need to quickly firm up their strategy to win the civic polls in the state as was the case during the last assembly polls," stressed Bhujbal, who had been the mayor of Mumbai twice in the past. The proximity between Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and MNS chief Raj Thackeray has been growing of late. Both had addressed a public rally in July and Raj recently visited Matoshree to greet Uddhav on the latter's birthday. A section of the Mahayuti politicians are apprehensive that the pre-poll understanding between Sena (UBT) and MNS could have an impact on the ruling alliance's prospects in the forthcoming civic polls, including BMC. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo These politicians are of the view that the two Thackeray cousins could consolidate the Marathi speaking voters that spell trouble for the ruling alliance in the local body polls. Bhujbal said, "In Nashik, the NCP would like to have an understanding with BJP and Shiv Sena both for Nashik Municipal Corporation and Nashik ZP polls. But if that is not possible then NCP would contest independently. Nashik NCP unit's initial preparations for the polls have started." BJP minister Meghana Bordikar threatens gram sevak at public event in Parbhani, claims he sought bribes from PMAY beneficiaries
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: A video of Meghana Bordikar, the BJP minister of state for public health, threatening a gram sevak at a public function in Bori, of Parbhani's Jintur taluka, has gone viral. NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar posted the video on his social media handles, criticising Bordikar as well as chief minister Devendra Fadnavis for his choice of "arrogant" ministers in state govt. He accused Bordikar of threatening a gram sevak for allegedly not bringing an adequate number of PMAY beneficiaries to the event. Bordikar, however, said the gram sevak was demanding bribes from widows and workers among other PMAY beneficiaries, and, therefore, she reprimanded him in the public interest. In the video, Bordikar can be heard saying: "If you work in this manner, remember these are Meghana Bordikar's words... I'll slap you. Who pays for your salary? You'll be dismissed immediately." She adds, "Don't try to be anyone's flatterer. Do you think I don't know how you function? If you want to work like this, quit this job."
