Haridwar strengthens Ganga cleanliness with advanced sewage treatment
These include a 68 MLD STP at Jagjeetpur and a 14 MLD STP in the Sarai area. With these additions, Haridwar's total sewage treatment capacity now stands at 145 MLD, operating at peak efficiency.
The Jagjeetpur STP, based on Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR) technology, is the largest in Uttarakhand and holds the distinction of being India's first STP under the Hybrid Annuity Model. It is also the country's first 'Pink STP', with 50 per cent of its staff comprising women, promoting gender inclusivity in environmental management.
'Earlier, all domestic waste used to flow directly into the Ganga. The biggest achievement of our plant is that we are now able to treat all the sewage generated by our community effectively,' said Manoj Kumar Verma, in-charge of the Jagjeetpur STP.
Similarly, the 14 MLD STP in Sarai is effectively treating sewage using modern techniques. The treated water is being reused for irrigation, benefiting the local agricultural community and helping to mitigate groundwater depletion.
Sandeep Rathore, a local farmer, said that the change in groundwater is noticeable.
'The water from this STP is being used for irrigation, and the difference compared to groundwater is clearly noticeable. Crops irrigated with this treated water grow much better. The nutrient content and overall quality of the water are excellent; it truly nourishes the crops,' Rathore said.
These advanced facilities are future-ready, equipped to manage rising waste volumes stemming from the city's growing population and the increasing influx of pilgrims during major festivals such as the Char Dham Yatra. These initiatives mark important milestones under the Namami Gange Mission, launched by the Government of India to restore the Ganga to its pristine form. Apart from pollution abatement, the mission also aims to protect the religious, cultural, and ecological significance of riverside cities, such as Haridwar.
The progress in Haridwar reflects the collective commitment of stakeholders towards sustainable development and river conservation. (ANI)

A large portrait of His Holiness was placed before the temple's main altar, which features the thousand-armed Avalokiteshvara (Gwaneum Bosal), symbolising compassion--a virtue strongly associated with the Dalai Lama. The spiritual ceremony included mandala offerings, long-life prayers, and collective chanting of Guru Yoga by both Tibetan and Korean monks. Lay practitioners and attendees offered ceremonial white scarves, or khatags, to the portrait of the Dalai Lama, expressing their respect and prayers for his continued guidance. Leaders from the Korean Buddhist sangha delivered remarks highlighting the Dalai Lama's contributions to global peace and harmony. The atmosphere was both reverent and celebratory, with emotional moments during shared prayers and the symbolic uniting of Tibetan and Korean traditions. Following the ceremony, participants shared a vegetarian meal and enjoyed a three-tiered birthday cake inscribed with 'Happy Birthday to Your Holiness the Dalai Lama.' Group photos and warm conversations followed, strengthening bonds between the two communities. The term 'Dalai Lama' means 'Ocean of Wisdom' in Mongolian. Odisha: Jagannath temple's Ratna Bhandar work completed: Official
Puri (Odisha) [India], July 8 (ANI): The Archaeological Survey of India has completed the repair work of Jagannath temple's Ratna Bhandar (treasury) and the inventory-related work will begin after the valuables are shifted to the Ratna Bhandar, according to the temple's Chief Administrator Arabinda Kumar Padhee. Arabinda Kumar Padhee also told ANI that a high-level committee headed by Justice Biswanath Rath will assist the Jagannath temple managing committee in the inventory-related work of all the valuables. 'I am proud and privileged to announce the completion of the conservation and repair of both the inner and outer Ratna Bhandar. Now, as per the standard operating procedure approved by the government. Now, the valuables will be transferred from the temporary strongrooms to the original ones, and afterwards, the inventory work will begin. The government has already appointed a high-level committee headed by Justice Biswanath Rath. They will assist the Jagannath temple managing committee in inventorisation of all the valuables,' Arabinda Kumar Padhee said. According to the temple's chief administration, the Ratna Bhandar was opened after a gap of four and a half decades. He added that the valuables were moved to the temporary strongrooms, following which ASI started the repair work. 'The Ratna Bhandar of Shree Jagannath Puri Temple was reopened on July 14, 2024, after a 4.5-decade gap. Thereafter, the valuables and jewellery were shifted from the Inner Ratna Bhandar and Outer Ratna Bhandar to the temporary strongrooms. Thereafter, the Archaeological Survey of India conducted a laser scanning and penetrating survey... Following this, conservation and repair works commenced on December 17, 2024, and were carried out in two phases,' Arabinda Kumar Padhee. The restoration work was carried out in two phases by ASI, with the first phase lasting from December 17, 2024, to April 28, 2025 and the second phase from June 28, 2025, to July 7, 2025. 'The first phase lasted from December 17, 2024, to April 28, 2025. The second phase began on June 28, 2025, and continued until July 7, 2025... Warsaw [Poland], July 8 (ANI): The Tibetan diaspora in Poland commemorated the 90th birthday of the 14th Dalai Lama with a peaceful gathering and cultural programme held at Hoza 69, Warsaw, on July 6, according to reports from the Tibetan Association in Poland. The event, attended by around 15-20 people, including five to seven Polish nationals, began with a collective prayer for the long life of the Dalai Lama. Participants offered traditional white scarves, or khatas, as a symbol of respect and spiritual purity. The ceremony reflected the enduring reverence held for the Tibetan spiritual leader among the diaspora and supporters of Tibetan culture and Buddhism in Poland. Organised by the Tibetan Association in Poland, the celebration also featured the introduction of a book titled Voice for the Voiceless, authored by the Dalai Lama. The book was presented by Paulina Koniuch, a Polish student from the University of Warsaw, who emphasised the global relevance of the Dalai Lama's message of compassion and non-violence. A short documentary about Dolma Ling Nunnery in Dharamshala, India, was screened during the event, offering attendees a glimpse into the lives of Tibetan Buddhist nuns and the preservation of monastic education in exile.
