When the Los Angeles Lakers acquired Luka Doncic in the blockbuster trade ahead of last year's deadline, it was a passing of the torch. LeBron James had been the face of the franchise for years, but now it's Doncic's turn.
It has become clear that the Lakers are focused on their future with Doncic. James is still on the team, but he is no longer the focal points of the franchise.
Doncic has been one of the NBA's biggest stars for years, but now his name has grown even bigger in Los Angeles. However, there are questions about his future.
Luka Doncic #77 of the Los Angeles Lakers warms up before the game against the Dallas Mavericks at American Airlines Center on April 09, 2025 in Dallas, Texas.

Right now, it remains uncertain when a contract extension could be reached. It is widely expected that the two sides will work something out, but there has been no rush to do so yet.
ESPN NBA insider Brian Windhorst has now spoken out with an update about Doncic's contract. He isn't expecting to hear anything about a new deal in the immediate future.
During a television appearance on ESPN, Windhorst revealed more details about a potential timeline for Doncic and the Lakers.
"I would not expect it to happen that early," Windhorst said. "He's playing for the Slovenian national team. Do not freak out if you do not hear from Luka contractually until September."
After being traded to Los Angeles in the middle of last season, Doncic played in 28 regular season games with the Lakers. He averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.5 assists, and 1.6 steals per game, while shooting 43.8 percent overall and 37.9 percent from three-point range.

He was a part of helping take the team to the playoffs, where they lost in the first round to the Minnesota Timberwolves. In the five postseason games he played, Doncic averaged 30.2 points per game to go along with seven rebounds, 5.8 assists, and a steal per contest.
Fans should expect to see Doncic work something out with Los Angeles. There is no reason to panic about his current contract status.
Expect to hear more about this situation as the season starts drawing closer. For now, there's simply no rush from either the Lakers or Doncic.

Nets' Drew Timme reacts to Kendrick Perkins' endorsement of his play

LAS VEGAS -- Brooklyn Nets center Drew Timme showed last season with the Nets that he had a place in the league as a big man who could score in the post. However, thus far in the Las Vegas Summer League, Timme showed that he could take over a game for Brooklyn and he even received some praise from former NBA player Kendrick Perkins. "Man, that's super cool. Especially from a guy who's played that long and been around the block. That's super cool. That's what I'm trying to get to," Timme said after dropping 30 points, five rebounds, and three assists in a 102-96 loss to Tre Johnson and the Washington Wizards on Sunday. Perkins, like many others, saw how Timme played in the game and thought that he proved he could be an impact player for some NBA team next season. "That's the dream and that's the goal. That hasn't quite been the narrative I'd say since I left college: that I can play in the league and deserve a spot or whatever," Timme continued. "The kind of sudden narrative change, it's good because you've seen what people said about you earlier. Now to see that narrative kind of flip, man, it's pretty cool. I'm just grateful for it." Through three games played in the summer league, Timme is averaging 25.3 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game while shooting 55.4% from the field and 21.4% from three-point land. Timme has already proven that he can play at the NBA level, but what he has done in Las Vegas could be showing others that he may be ready for a bigger role for a team that is looking for frontcourt depth. As of this writing, Timme is under contract with the Nets for the 2025-26 season at $1.95 million after having his team option exercised by Brooklyn. However, the Nets still have Nic Claxton as the starting center and brought back backup center Day'Ron Sharpe in free-agency so there is at least two players in the way of Timme as he seeks more playing time. The good thing is, he's proven that he belongs and that could be useful next season.

Former Sixers star Dikembe Mutombo ranked No. 81 player in NBA history

Former Philadelphia 76ers star Dikembe Mutombo is one of the best defenders in the history of the NBA. Mutombo won Defensive Player of the Year four times in his career and blocked 2.8 shots per game in his 18-year career. He led the league in blocks three seasons in a row from 1993 through 1996. When the Sixers acquired Mutombo at the 2001 trade deadline, he gave them that defensive presence to push them to the finals. He averaged 11.7 points, 12.4 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks with Philadelphia after the trade on his way to winning his fourth and final DPOY award. He was an All-Star in his lone full season with the Sixers when he averaged 11.5 points and 10.8 rebounds along with 2.4 blocks per game. Bleacher Report ranked the top 100 players in the history of the NBA with Mutombo coming in ranked No. 81 on the list: One of only three players to collect four career DPOY awards, Mutombo dominated the interior during the late 1990s with the Nuggets and Hawks. And he was a key member of the early-2000s Philadelphia 76ers that made the NBA Finals. Though not much of an offensive threat, Mutombo was the premier shot-blocker of his day and left the lasting legacy of the finger-wag celebration after particularly rude swats. He ranks second behind Olajuwon on the all-time blocks list and checks in at No. 20 in career rebounds. Mutombo is a Hall of Famer who played for the Denver Nuggets, Atlanta Hawks, Sixers, New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks, and Houston Rockets before retiring after the 2008-09 season. He passed away in September of 2024.

No one escapes scrutiny on the New York sports scene, especially these franchise linchpins

'Well, here you are, in the ninth, two men out and three men on. Nowhere to look, but inside, where we all respond to PRESSURE.' Now, I would have preferred to use lyrics from the better and more meaningful song — 'Under Pressure' by Queen and David Bowie — but the sports metaphor in Billy Joel's 1980s hit 'Pressure' was a better fit to get us into the following exercise for today's newsletter. Wednesday was that rare day on the yearly sports calendar with no games scheduled in MLB, the NBA, the NFL and the NHL. (Yes, there was a full slate in both MLS and the WNBA, so no angry emails, please!) But we decided to use the inactivity to break down those local sports figures facing the most pressure for the remainder of 2025, beginning with the second half of the baseball season for the Yankees and the Mets:
