SEMPORNA: The state government continues to strengthen Sabah's tourism products on the international stage, said Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan. According to him, various measures and initiatives have been implemented to highlight and promote the uniqueness of Sabah's culture, religion, and natural environment to the global community.
Advertisement The Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development roadmap, introduced by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor, identifies tourism as one of the key sectors capable of generating economic returns for the state, alongside agriculture and industry. Therefore, the state government is formulating and implementing various strategies and initiatives to further enhance and promote the tourism sector. Among these efforts is the organisation of the Regatta Lepa, which showcases a variety of unique elements , not only in terms of religious diversity but also cultural heritage and natural beauty and to the international community. 'We view the Regatta Lepa as a tourism product that has clearly received the government's attention, and I would like to commend the Ministry of Tourism for its consistent efforts in organising this event every year. Their dedication continues to introduce the state of Sabah , especially the Semporna district to the international community,' he said to the media during the Lepa Parade in conjunction with the 30th Semporna Regatta Lepa celebration here. In this regard, Nizam also revealed that his ministry has submitted a request for increased funding to further strengthen the tourism sector. The government has also requested additional allocations, and we hope that the Ministry of Tourism, as the responsible authority, will ensure that all tourism-related infrastructure can be further improved. 'I am confident that if all such requests are based on solid foundations and given priority, with the state's revenue increasing day by day, we will also ensure that allocations for tourism can be further enhanced and strengthened,' he explained. Regarding the Bajau Laut community, Nizam stated that their culture has also been utilised as a tourist attraction to encourage visits to the islands in the district. 'The Bajau Laut community has long existed in the waters of Sabah and naturally represents a significant tourism attraction. Therefore, I hope the Ministry of Tourism will take this into consideration and study whether it can yield positive tourism outcomes. We must establish Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) that everyone will be required to follow.' 'We want to make sure the ocean stays clean and protected, so it's important to have clear rules and laws that everyone respects. Since this community doesn't always fall under any one country's laws, we need to carefully figure out the legal side of things. If everything aligns with our national regulations, then I truly believe there's great potential to develop tourism in Sabah and create income for the local people,' he shared. A total of eight lepa boats competed for the Traditional Lepa championship, including Lepa Abisa, Lepa Legasi, Lepa Dorogaan, and Lepa Makasali, successfully attracting more than 50,000 visitors to the festival. Also present to watch the parade were District Officer Alexander Liew, who also chairs the committee organizing the 30th Regatta Lepa celebration, and Deputy Minister of Finance II, Datuk Tan Lee Fatt. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Published on: Saturday, July 05, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jul 05, 2025 By: Hayati Dzulkifli Text Size: Abidin (middle) representing the Chief Minister doing the launching gimmick with Dr Yusof (3rd right) and others at the event. Kota Kinabalu: The State Government is committed to strengthening infrastructure delivery with the official launch of the Sabah Utility Corridor (KUS), a strategic initiative that will serve as a key catalyst for systemic development in Sabah. Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor said the establishment of KUS is not just an introduction of a new entity but reflects the State Government's determination to accelerate development, coordinate utilities and attract new investments to the state. Advertisement 'KUS is mandated to be a One-Stop Agency to expedite utility work permit processes and comprehensively develop the state's utility asset database,' he said at the KUS official launch at the Marriott Hotel on Friday. His speech was delivered by the Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Abidin Madingkir. Also present were KUS Chairman Datuk Dr Johnson Tee, KUSSB Executive Chairman Amir Yazzed Abdul Hadi, KUSSB Director Dato Lion Peh, QSB Group Chief Executive Officer Datuk Ahmad Rizal Dahli, and the Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Local Government and Housing, Datuk Dr Jamili Nais. Hajiji said this aligns with the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) roadmap, which emphasises comprehensive development and the delivery of efficient, transparent, and future-oriented services. He said the use of digital technology and integrated utility maps through KUS can expedite project approvals, reduce overlapping work, and enhance fieldwork safety. Hajiji said this approach will give a significant impact not only on the smooth implementation of government and private projects but also supports the state's digitalisation agenda, investment competitiveness, and smart city development. 'This is an example of public-private sector synergy that can produce high-impact solutions for the people,' he said. He also emphasized that the coordination of utility processes will open up more new areas for development, thereby stimulating economic activity and generating job opportunities, particularly in the rural areas. 'Projects like this will strengthen industrial logistics and expand access to essential supplies such as electricity, water, and telecommunications to rural communities,' he said. Hajiji also called on all employees of KUS Sabah Berhad (KUSSB) and Qhazanah Sabah Berhad to continue their efforts with professionalism, and commitment to ensure that this facility truly benefits the people. 'We have laid a solid foundation. Now is the time to implement it boldly and earnestly,' he said. Meanwhile, Qhazanah Sabah Berhad (QSB) Chairman Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob said the official launch of the Sabah Utility Corridor (KUS) on Friday marks a significant step in the State Government's efforts to strengthen the development of utility infrastructure in a more structured, transparent, and efficient manner. He described the launch of KUS as the starting point for a new approach in Sabah to strengthen utility capabilities for the well-being of the people and to support sustainable future development. He said the KUS initiative represents the start of a new phase in the State's strategic development. 'KUS is not just an implementing agency, but also reflects the State Government's broader vision to transform the utility and infrastructure ecosystem through a comprehensive and integrated approach. 'As a wholly state-owned investment company, QSB has been mandated to lead the establishment and implementation of KUS Sabah Berhad (KUSSB), in line with our commitments under the state's development agenda, Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ),' he said. Dr Yusof said QSB views KUS as a strategic catalyst not only to accelerate utility applications and implementation, but also as a foundation for sustainable, competitive, and long-term economic growth for the state. He added that strategic investments like KUS directly benefit the people and the State by driving high-impact investments in the utility, technology, infrastructure, and digitalization sectors. 'The digital platform introduced by KUS is also expected to speed up approval processes and improve the efficiency of public service delivery, thereby promoting more organized development,' he said. At the same time, Dr Yusof assured that utility mapping work will be carried out by certified local surveyors in Sabah, as an effort to empower local talent and provide opportunities for local professionals to contribute to the industry. 'We believe the collaboration between the State Government, technical agencies, and industry players will ensure that the implementation of state development policies is carried out consistently and effectively,' he said. According to KUSSB Joint Chief Operating Officer Michael Chung told reporters that KUS is a web-based platform and the URL is which has started operating from Friday (July 4). He said this platform enables the applicant, which is the utility provider, and if they want to apply for permit to do utility project, they will come to this portal and apply for it. 'So the utility provider can start to register in our website and then they can start to apply for the app. They can have the choice now. 'So in this portal, we will handle the applications from the utility provider such as Sabah Electricity (SE) and Sabah Water Department while utility involves electricity, water, gas, and telecommunication fibre. 'Last, we will deal with the process in terms of liaising with the local authorities. So when application comes in, we take the application and we then bring it to the local authorities to apply for the permit,' he said, adding that KUS can be likened to MyEG concept that provides online government and commercial services to the people including business community. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
