Karishma Nair appointed Kumbh body commissioner
Nashik: Additional commissioner of the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) Karishma Nair has been given an additional responsibility as commissioner the Kumbh Mela Authority.
She will continue to serve in her role as additional NMC commissioner alongside this new appointment. The newly formed Kumbh Mela Authority, recently established by state govt, aims to accelerate development projects for the religious event, mirroring a similar body in Prayagraj. The Authority's first meeting is set for next week.
The committee is chaired by divisional commissioner of Nashik Praveen Gedam. Nashik district collector Jalaj Sharma and Inspector General of Police (Nashik Range) Dattatray Karale serve as vice-chairpersons.
Other members include NMC commissioner Manisha Khatri and other officials.
Nair, while speaking to TOI, said the first meeting of the Kumbh Mela Authority will be held next week and the date will be finalised in the next two to three days. "During the first meeting we will discuss the appointment of staff, new office, and other issues," she said.
The Kumbh Mela is scheduled to take place between 2026 and 2028. The flag hoisting of the Mela will occur in Oct 2026, while the first three Amrit Snans (holy baths) will take place during the Aug-Sept period in 2027. Sadhus will take a holy dip at Ramkund in the Godavari river on Amrit Snan days.
All the authorities concerned have outlined Kumbh Mela plans worth Rs24,000 crore, including a Rs15,000 crore plan by the Nashik Municipal Corporation alone.

Nashik: State minister for food and civil supplies Chhagan Bhujbal on Friday expressed the need to conserve Godavari river and make it pollution-free ahead of upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela. "Hence, we should first stop the release of effluent into Godavari river," he said. "There is a need to conserve the river and make it pollution-free ahead of forthcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela," said Bhujbal. On June 14, Bhujbal visited Dwarka Circle along with officials from various departments. He blamed both Nashik Municipal Corporation and the police authorities for not taking initiatives for traffic management at Dwarka Circle. Bhujbal also warned that he would sit there if things did not improve. A day after Bhujbal's visit, Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) conducted a drive against encroachment on both sides of the service roads in Dwarka Circle towards Mumbai Naka and towards Ozar from June 15 onwards. The minister said things were improving as he did not find any traffic at Dwarka Circle on Friday. Bhujbal also expressed the need for the civic body to ensure that encroachment does not create hurdles for vehicular traffic on various city roads and junctions. Bhujbal also said NMC should focus on smooth functioning of the traffic signals which should change to red or green as per the flow of vehicles. Stating that Nashik city does not need vertical growth, Bhujbal said that instead of going for vertical development like Mumbai and Pune, focus should be on horizontal development of Nashik city. Instead of bringing in polluted industries, focus should be on developing Nashik as a tourist destination, he said.

NMC seeks disbursement of Rs4,000 crore for Kumbh Mela works
Nashik: The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has formally requested Rs4,000 crore from state govt to fund major projects ahead of the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela. The civic body has asked for these funds to be allocated by the end of March 2026. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In a letter sent to state govt, the NMC emphasized on the urgency of the funding, stating that the proposed works require a two-year time frame for completion. To facilitate this, the civic body has urged the govt to include the provision for these funds in its supplementary demands during the upcoming monsoon session of the state legislative assembly, which is scheduled to begin on Monday. Municipal commissioner Manisha Khatri confirmed the demand and said, "We have already sent a letter to state govt in this connection. We hope the funds will be approved in the supplementary demands during the upcoming monsoon session of the state assembly being held in Mumbai." The civic administration has prepared a Rs15,000 crore plan for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela, slated to be held between 2026 and 2028. The major three amrit snans (holy bath) will take place in Aug and Sept 2027. The NMC needs to start all major works which require around two years. The civic body is also in the process of starting works for land acquisition at Sadhugram, construction of bridges, construction of new sewage treatment plants (STPs), sewage network, among other works. In the first phase, the NMC will undertake works worth Rs 7,779 crore, of which around Rs 4,000 crore are to be spent by March 2026. Keeping this in mind, the civic body has written to state govt, seeking funds.

Nashik civic body plans to raise Rs100cr through green municipal bonds
Nashik: The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) is set to raise Rs100 crore through the issuance of municipal green bonds. This move mirrors a similar initiative undertaken by the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). The funds secured from these green bonds will be dedicated to various environment-friendly projects in preparation for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela. These initiatives will encompass crucial areas such as water supply management, waste management, and other related environmental efforts. Municipal commissioner Manisha Khatri , while talking to TOI, said, "We are working in that direction to raise the funds as we will need funds for various green projects in view of the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela. We will raise around Rs100 crore through the green municipal bonds." She also highlighted that central govt offers incentives to municipal corporations that raise funds for green projects through such bonds. The PCMC recently raised Rs200 crore through green municipal bonds and became the first municipal corporation in Maharashtra to do so. The bond issue witnessed substantial investor interest, being oversubscribed by 5.1 times. The bonds were floated via private placement on the BSE's Electronic Bidding Platform and attracted bids worth Rs513 crore, oversubscribing the offer by 5.13 times. The base issue of Rs100 crore was fully subscribed within just one minute of opening, indicating strong investor confidence.
