A former Aston Villa youngster has admitted he turned down a move to Wrexham – but he now can't actually recall the reasons for his decision.
Jamie Ward came up through the youth ranks of the Premier League club during the early 2000s before turning professional in 2005. Despite captaining Villa's reserves, the forward did not make a single first-team appearance for his boyhood team and was loaned out to League Two's Stockport County in March of the following year.

Ward's performances in the fourth tier were impressive enough to attract the attention of several teams following his release by Villa in the summer of 2006. The decision sparked a battle between Wrexham, Stockport and Torquay United to secure his services.

The ex-Northern Ireland international, who spent most of his career in the Championship with the likes of Derby County and Nottingham Forest, took some time to consider his options. However, while Wrexham are now a highly attractive prospect under the ownership of Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, he decided a move to North Wales was not for him at the time, opting for Torquay instead.
Ward showed signs of regret over the choice during a recent appearance on the Undr The Cosh podcast after admitting he'd been impressed by the Red Dragons' home stadium.
"After the Stockport loan, I was done at Villa," he said. "Getting in that environment and knowing that I was actually capable of playing league football at a young age was the kick up the backside I probably needed.

"I had Stockport, Wrexham and Torquay after me, and I decided to go to Torquay. I was worried about Stockport struggling again, so that's why I didn't go there. I actually don't know why I didn't choose Wrexham, because the stadium was nice.
"I think the thing that swung it for me at Torquay is that the manager was from Birmingham, so he knew how far I was away from home. He said to me, 'Listen, if you're ever struggling and you want to go home for a few days, all you have to do is tell me.'

"That was a nice option to have where you can just get in the car, get up the road free and you're back with your family three hours later."
Ward's time at Torquay was short-lived following an ownership change and a new manager being brought in soon after he joined. He later put in a transfer request in December 2006, before moving to Chesterfield the following month.

Despite voicing some remorse at not going to Wrexham, Ward's decision turned out to be for the best. The 2006/07 season was a tumultuous one for the Red Dragons as they struggled for form and manager Denis Smith was sacked in January 2007.
His successor Brian Carey kept the club in League Two by the skin of their teeth with a 3-1 home win over Boston United on the final day of the season. However, their relief was only temporary as Wrexham dropped out of the Football League in 2008 and spent 15 years in exodus in non-league's top tier.
Ward was to enjoy a more positive trajectory after his impressive performances for Chesterfield caught the eye of Championship outfit Sheffield United. He later spent time with Derby and Nottingham Forest and also had a short spell on loan at Cardiff City in 2018, before turning out for several non-league sides in the twilight of his career.

Newcastle haunted by Alexander Isak U-turn as broken transfer promise emerges

Newcastle could lose Alexander Isak this summer with the striker eyeing up other options - just 12 months after the Swedish forward saw a contract promise broken Newcastle face the prospect of losing Alexander Isak this summer - with the Swede telling the club he wants to explore his options away from St James' Park. ‌ The forward has become one of Europe's elite No.9s and has spearheaded the Magpies' recent rise, but is now considering a move for pastures new - with Liverpool the favourites to land the £125million-rated star. It comes a year after he thought a new contract was coming his way, only for those talks to be shelved in a move that still stings. ‌ Even before his record-breaking recent season, Isak was clearly heading towards top-class status and former co-owners Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi reassured the forward and his camp in March of last year that improved terms were on the way. ‌ However a change to the hierarchy meant that promise was broken and that stung Isak. Now, with the club wanting to reward his importance with a new contract, the player is instead looking at what could be on the horizon for him away from Newcastle. It all comes back to the decision taken by former sporting director Paul Mitchell, who has since left after only spending a year in his role. The ex-Monaco and Tottenham chief told Isak that he would not be offered a new deal with the salary he wanted potentially leading to Profit and Sustainability breaches, as reported the Daily Mail. ‌ Mitchell felt that the Swede still had four years left to run on his contract - now three - and was already among the club's highest earners. It has been claimed that the decision upset Isak, with his frustration impacting on the dressing room as a whole. In light of his stellar season, where Isak scored 27 times in all competitions, including one in the Carabao Cup final, the club are ready to offer him a huge pay increase but it may be a case of too little, too late with the player making rumblings that he wants a new challenge elsewhere. Eddie Howe has confessed that any decision must benefit Newcastle, with the club potentially landing a British-record fee if Isak does leave, with the hierarchy ultimately making the final call on his future. He said: "The club will make the right decision with all the information that it has, and ultimately to try and move the club forward in whatever way that is. "But I think there's a wider picture here. There's a whole football club that has to make the decision. The ownership, together with the board of directors, especially with the money involved in modern day transfers. The manager of course has an opinion, but ultimately the decision will rest with the board." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Wrexham headed Down Under to prepare for Championship season

After spending two summers touring the United States as part of their preparations, the Reds have spent this year in Australia and New Zealand. Matches against Melbourne Victory, Sydney FC and Wellington Phoenix have helped Wrexham for their first season in the second tier in over four decades. Boss Parkinson told the club's YouTube channel: "The tour's been amazing, it really has. The experience we've had, I don't think anyone who's on the tour will ever forget. "Obviously, Melbourne was, you know, a great experience for us. The first few days, obviously, everyone's recovering from the jet-lag! "But training was good there, despite that. The game was decent. "Obviously, we had a bit of free time and then, obviously, Sydney, you know, really blew everybody away being in the city and, again, the welcome we had there, like Melbourne, was extraordinary. "Over to New Zealand and we've come to this facility, which is used by the All Blacks, and what an honour that is to be using the same pitches and the gym as (such) a prestigious team as the All Blacks. "The pitches are really quality. The gym facilities and everything, and these surroundings, has been outstanding for us. The sun's been shining as well, which we didn't expect here at Wellington. So, yeah, that part of it has been great." Wrexham opened their tour with a comfortable 3-0 triumph over Melbourne Victory, confirmed by goals from Tom O'Connor, Ryan Hardie and George Evans. Despite taking the lead via an own goal, the Reds lost out 2-1 to Sydney and it was Wellington who prevailed 1-0 in the final friendly of the tour. These matches will work towards getting Wrexham ready for their Championship season, which begins with the trip to Southampton, relegated from the Premier League, on Saturday, August 9.
