Ryan Greene of Paradise makes NHL debut with Chicago Blackhawks
Ryan Greene added his name to a list of dozens of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to play in the NHL on Monday, suiting up for the Chicago Blackhawks while facing off against fellow Newfoundlander Alex Newhook and the Montreal Canadiens.
Greene skated for just under 13 minutes in Monday's game against Montreal, blocking three shots and winning three face-offs. Chicago won 4-3 in a shoot out.
Greene, 21, signed a three-year contract with the Blackhawks on Sunday. The team drafted him 57th overall in 2022.
He most recently played hockey at Boston University, where he helped his team reach the national championship. Greene was among an initial pool of 100 players nominated for the Hobey Baker award, a prize that goes to the top men's collegiate hockey player.
He is expected to stay with the team for its final game of the season against Ottawa Tuesday night.
Greene is among four active players from Newfoundland and Labrador playing in the NHL this season — joining Newhook, Dawson Mercer of the New Jersey Devils and Clark Bishop of the Calgary Flames.

Cody Fajardo set to start for Elks against Riders
Former Saskatchewan Roughriders quarterback Cody Fajardo will start for the Edmonton Elks Friday night against the Green and White at Mosaic Stadium. Fajardo was listed as the starter on the Elks' depth chart, released Thursday morning. Trevor Harris will start for the Riders (5-1). Fajardo spent three seasons with the Riders (2019, 2021, 2022) emerging as the Green and White's starting pivot in 2019 when he led the CFL with 4,302 passing yards, 18 touchdowns and eight interceptions, helping the Riders to a 13-5 regular season record, losing just once at home. Fajardo then threw for 366 yards and an interception in the 2019 West Final in a losing effort to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Before departing Rider Nation in February 2023 Fajardo posted a heartfelt letter to Rider fans on social media. Fajardo signed with Montreal after departing Saskatchewan and went on to win the 2023 Grey Cup with the Alouettes. He was also named Grey Cup MVP in Montreal's 28-24 win over Winnipeg. Social Sharing When the clock hit zero, kicking off celebrations with his teammates after clinching the NBA title, Luguentz Dort's thoughts were dominated by his family and his memories growing up in Montréal Nord. "I was thinking about my whole — everything honestly, my whole childhood," Dort said. "My family got to come on stage with me and then celebrate that as well. It was a moment I'll never forget." Later this summer, Dort will be bringing the NBA trophy home to Montréal-Nord next month after winning an NBA title with the Oklahoma City Thunder in seven games versus the Indiana Pacers. "I feel like they deserve that because they've been supporting me all season," he told CBC's Daybreak Thursday morning. "Me and Ben, you know, spend a lot of time together during the off-season, we train together as well. So like, to be in there where like 'I'm not even talking to you,' like we was at that point like 'You not my friend no more,'" Dort said laughing. Earlier this year, Dort was also named to the NBA's All-Defensive First Team, an honour recognizing his skill as a defensive player during the regular season. Dort joined the Thunder in 2019 after teams passed up on him at the NBA draft — despite the fact he had been projected as a first-round pick. The hurt and disappointment from that night has helped develop into a key cog on a championship team. "That's a day that I will never forget," he said of the 2019 NBA draft. "It's always a motivation every time I face a team that had the chance to draft me. But at the same time, it shaped me as a player and helped me, you know, get to where I am today." Dort won't just be back in Montreal to celebrate the NBA championship win. He runs a basketball camp in the city, with hopes of giving potential future NBA stars opportunities he didn't have as a younger player. "Growing up, I used to travel a lot to go those elite camps in L.A. or Houston or all those big cities," he said.
