These Whiskeys Honor Spirited Women's History

These Whiskeys Honor Spirited Women's History

I've been writing about whiskey for well over a decade, and every year the field grows more diverse with women owning brands and working throughout distilleries including in leadership positions like master blender and master distiller.
But it surprised me at a Compass Box tasting last month that while women have taken a part in distilling, since, well, distilling existed, the first time a female form was on a Scotch bottle was for Hedonism, the first blended grain Scotch to ever be released on the market in 2000.
It got me thinking — what other whiskeys could I think of that put women front and center on the packaging? Here are a few I thought of that had interesting backstories — and great liquid inside.
Jefferson's Marian McLain Bourbon
Marian McClain from Jefferson's
Jefferson's, known for its bourbon aged at sea, put out this limited release in 2023, and it's one of founder Trey Zoeller's favorites. It honors Zoeller's eighth generation grandmother, one of the earliest documented female bootleggers and whiskey runners in history, Marian McClain.
Whiskey expert Fred Minnick gives her a shoutout in his 2013 book 'Whiskey Women: The Untold Story of How Women Saved Bourbon, Scotch, and Irish Whiskey.' Minnick wrote she was arrested in 1799 in Georgia for illicit distillation. Zoeller said making whiskey — and not paying taxes — was a necessity born out of needing to support her five children after her husband Angus died during the Revolutionary War.
The bourbon is a blend of five different components, each honoring one of McClain's children. The brand is set to release the second edition in June of this year, with five different component whiskeys.
Zoeller told me it was important for him to honor the 'badass women' in his life and his lineage. One of those women was his grandmother.
'When you went to her house, she didn't ask you what you wanted to drink, she asked you how you take your bourbon,' Zoeller said, adding that his grandfather died when he was two months old, and his grandmother took over running the bowling alleys they owned, becoming the first female president of the Kentucky Bowling Association.
And while brands can sometimes target lighter blends for women, Zoeller said once women enter the category, they gravitate towards the stronger stuff.
'Women typically prefer higher proof bourbon and more flavorful bourbon,' he said. 'They've got a better palate. They are able to taste more flavors and articulate it.
Mary Dowling Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey finished in Tequila Barrels
Mary Dowling
Kaveh Zamanian, started deep diving into Kentucky bourbon history when he founded Rabbit Hole in Louisville in 2012. He came across a brief mention of Mary Dowling and a distillery in Juarez in an article and found her really intriguing. Mary and her husband John Dowling owned three distilleries, including Waterfill & Frazier. After her husband died in 1903, she took over running the distillery, and when she was deemed a credit risk she helped recharter a bank. Things get even more complicated during prohibition — dramatic enough that Zamaian patterned to write a book about her life with historian Eric Goodman, coming out in April. Eventually Dowling and her sons relocated the Waterfill & Frazier distillery to Mexico.
After Zamanian launched Rabbit Hole, a relative of Dowling purchased the Waterfill & Frazer mark, and reached out to Zamanain to find out what he knew about the brand. Zamanian doubled down on his research, hitting libraries and talking to local Kentucky families, and ended up purchasing the marks for Waterfill & Frazier and Dowling Brothers himself.
'When I started thinking about recreating or resurrecting the brands, I ultimately decided that it probably would be more appropriate to put her name on the bottle,' Zamanian said. 'The brand came to be as a way of trying to celebrate the person behind the brands that was never on the bottle as the marquee name because of the times.'
Zamanian said it took him a while to figure out what sort of whiskey they were producing at Waterfill & Frazier, but eventually learned that Robert Gould owned the distillery a bit, and that the recipe there eventually became Wild Turkey. He had already started planning the whiskeys for the Dowling brand, and the high rye bourbon that he ended up finishing in tequila casks as a nod to Dowling's ties to Juarez is only very similar to the mash bill at Wild Turkey. Two other expressions are wheated bourbons, one finished in toasted barrels and the other finished in two different oak barrels at cask strength. While Zamanian doesn't have evidence she produced wheated expressions, he thinks they are fitting.
'I felt she was not only such a strong and formidable person, but had such grace and character, and II wanted to bring a whiskey to the fold that was a little bit more sweet and softer in some ways to represent a feminine presence.'
Maker's Mark Spirited Women Initiative
Maker's Mark, Spirited Women's Initiative
When Maker's Mark was founded in 1953, 'Bill Samuels Sr. focused on crafting his premium bourbon, our co-founder Margie Samuels did just about everything else,' said Valerie Netherton, the Director of Higher Purpose at Maker's Mark.
'She wasn't just a visionary, she had the credentials to back it up, graduating top of her class from the University of Louisville with a degree in chemistry. But beyond science, she had an incredible eye for design and a deep appreciation for the arts,' Netherton said.
Margie is the one that came up with a lot of what Maker's Mark, well, Maker's Mark. She came up with the name, inspired by English pewter where artisans would stamp their 'mark' as an indicator of quality. She came up with the font, the hand torn label, and rather than a rectangular shaped bottle, she liked one that had a rounded shoulders and long neck to make the 'glug glug glug' sound when poured, Netherton said. To top it off, it was her idea to hand dip every bottle in red wax.
While Margie's face has appeared on some editions sold exclusively at the distillery, the largest large scale release the brand has done with a female form is a collaboration with Gayle Kabaker which buyers can personalize with the names of women in their lives who have inspired them. It debuted last year during Women's History Month and was popular enough to bring back for a second time.
'For every personalized label ordered through makersmark.com, we're donating $1 to Vital Voices, something we know Margie would have been incredibly proud of,' said Netherton. Vital Voices is a nonprofit that helps foster women in leadership positions.
Hedonism from Compass Box
In 2023, Compass Box, an independent bottler that blends existing whisky rather than distilling any of its own single malts, discontinued the ongoing release of Hedonism and now releases it once a year as a limited edition, along with a new twist on the blend and a new label from female artists.
For the 2025 edition, the bottle features artwork from Argentina Sofia Bonati, who drew inspiration from the magnetic fields that are integral to how a compass works. She layered pencils, watercolor and acrylic gouache to create a woman that's boldly staring out from the bottle.
The blend features single grain from Cameronbridge distillery that was aged an additional two years in a first-fill Marsala barrique and blended with two single grain whiskies from Girvan Distillery, that were from past vatted iterations of Hedonism (a 16 year old and 19 year old).
The result is a caramel whisky with notes of peach and pear, with more cocoa and vanilla on the nose.
"The way that Sofia has captured the essence of the original Hedonism woman in her own style is incredible,' said Assistant Whiskymaker, Michael Stephenson. 'She represented the unique elements of this edition's recipe and taste profile through color that really draws the eye.'
This is not an exhaustive list — and hopefully more will be added to it. It's also worth checking out Milam & Greene, named for it's female founders and Grace O'Malley, named for an Irish pirate queen.

I Threw My Teen a Surprise Party—and It Was an Epic Parenting Move

One mom shares why she threw her 15-year-old a surprise party at a hotel and how she pulled it off. Let's take a moment of silence for parents raising teens. These years are challenging. It's the hormones, their desperate need for independence, and our inability to let go. Our teens are pushing us away and calling our hugs cringe. But when it comes to their birthday, we still want to share it with them and make it special. When planning my 15-year-old's birthday, I thought a surprise hotel party was the perfect way to bring us closer together. And I felt it would be something he would truly enjoy. Surprise parties are not the easiest to pull off but here's what helped me give my teen the ultimate celebration. Find Your Why Before embarking on the party planning process, I think it's important to know your why. The truth is we only have a few years left with our teens until they're off to college or to start another new life experience. Some of us will be empty nesters for the first time and will miss them deeply. We start to wonder if we spent enough time with them or if they still remember the lessons we've taught them. We would love for them to have memories to hold on to that make them feel loved. The celebration I planned did just that. My son hugged me and thanked me so many times. And if you're with me in this parenting stage you know that hugs are so few and far between. Choose the Right Location We opted for a New York City staycation at the Loews Regency Hotel and booked two rooms. Homes in the Big Apple tend to be small and it's really hard to surprise a teen that lives with you. This hotel screamed luxury and that was the feeling that I wanted my son and his friends to experience. A hotel party also helps to make things stress-free. It's a controlled space and the staff is able to help with setup, catering, and cleanup. My advice is to provide the hotel with enough notice of the party so that they can also be on the ready to help or make it special. Our concierge provided us with 15-year-old-themed balloons which added a special touch. The Loews team often checked in to see if I needed anything for my setup and were kind enough to source the Scotch Tape (that I swore I packed) for the room decor. My son and his friends were able to be themselves, play video games, and eat pizza without me hovering because I knew they were just in the other room. This party could easily be pulled off at an event space or a public park, but there was something nice about not having to worry about the weather or cleaning up after teenage boys for the weekend. Keep It Intimate Large parties can be overwhelming for just about anyone. The celebrant has to divide their time between making sure they check in with each guest and trying to have fun. It becomes less about the person we're celebrating and more about the people who attend. For my son's party, we invited three of his closest friends who would stay overnight and a small representation of his village. It was very important that I spoke to each kid's parent to make sure they had my contact information and a detailed plan so that they felt safe leaving their children in our care. I was raised by a very overprotective mom, so I go out of my way to make sure the parents know that I care and want their children to be safe. Figure Out Your Lie We spend our kids' entire lives telling them to be honest, but for a surprise party, a good lie is a must. I am a part of a huge village, and we are constantly helping each other fulfill our dreams. So, when I told my son I was helping one of his aunties on a film shoot, it didn't throw him off one bit. I warned him the night before that we may need his help on set, but that I would give him a heads up. I left the house early that morning with my Hulken tote bag in tow, and I was off to 'set.' I kept my son busy that day by scheduling a haircut appointment because I wanted him to show up to his party looking fresh. On his way home from the appointment, I told him I needed him to run to the city with his PlayStation so we could use it as a prop for a scene where the actor was playing video games. He asked if it could be his dad's Xbox, but I told him the script specifically said PS5, and that he needed to bring it over at 2 p.m. When he arrived in the lobby, one of his aunties escorted him to the 'set.' Moments later, surprise! He was shocked! My son was grateful, and he felt loved. Personalize the Theme My son has an obsession with Epic: The Musical. In case you don't know, that's a concept album created by Jorge Rivera-Herrans. It's been hard for me to grasp this idea of a musical that isn't performed anywhere but has millions of TikTok fans. I had to remind myself that this party was not about me. It was an opportunity for me to learn more about my son. It was an opportunity for his family to learn more about what his current interests are and what he's become since that Thomas the Tank Engine-obsessed 5-year-old. I learned that Epic is an adaptation of Homer's Odyssey, mixing anime, video games, and musical theater. This allowed me to understand why my son was so into it—it blends all of his favorite things. Get Some Help When Needed Parents everywhere have been using artificial intelligence (AI) for help in their day-to-day. Now I understand why. I procrastinated on the decor because I didn't know where to start so I used ChatGPT as a resource. I uploaded a photo of the hotel room and provided the Epic theme. It delivered a rendering that allowed me to execute the vision without even having to explain what the musical was. Instant relief! I sent the ideas to my cake baker and purchased all the decorations online. The final result was, well, epic! Add Special Moments in the Itinerary Create a flexible itinerary that you share with everyone before the event. The first day, we stuck to the plan. It was the surprise party first, followed by the after party at Dave & Buster's, and then gaming in the hotel suite. The second day, the boys opted for brunch, walking around Times Square on their own, and then going to the movies to watch Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning in 4DX. One of my favorite moments was having breakfast with my son and his friends. I asked them to put away their phones so that we could have some meaningful conversations. I asked them what they're looking forward to most about college and what they dream of doing when they get older. I tried to ask about any crushes, but I was told that was off-limits. As my children get older, I realize that time is fleeting, and I want them to have celebrations they won't forget. So, if you're thinking about throwing your teen a surprise party, just do it. Are Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson the top NFL QBs? A look at the new Madden 99 club

In what's become an annual conversation piece around this time of year, EA Sports released the latest class of the Madden 99 Club. The Madden 99 Club is a group of players who earn the exclusive '99' rating in the video game. Since 2002, 99 is the highest rating a player can achieve (there were a few 100s awarded by the game in its earlier days). Here's the 99 Club Class of Madden NFL 26: For five of the seven players, it's their first time receiving the honor. It's the second time for Garrett, who also received the top rating in Madden NFL 23, and the second time for Jefferson, who was part of the club in Madden NFL 24. Introducing your official #Madden26 99 Club Class! Sundays Start Early! 7 Days Early Access Begins 8/7*. 🔗: | #Madden26Ratings — Madden NFL 26 (@EAMaddenNFL) July 28, 2025 One distinction for this year's class is that there is no carryover from the previous year. For context, this is the first time since Madden NFL 2002 that there was not at least one member carried over from the last iteration of the game. Through the years, some dominant runs by individual players have helped keep that streak alive. Advertisement No player in the league received a 99 rating in Madden NFL 2001. However, from Madden NFL 2002 through Madden NFL 06, Ray Lewis received a 99 rating for five consecutive years. From Madden NFL 06 through Madden NFL 11, Peyton Manning carried a 99 rating for six straight years, until he missed a full season due to injury. Darrelle Revis had three consecutive top-rated years from Madden NFL 11 through Madden NFL 13. Calvin Johnson carried the torch from Madden NFL 13 through Madden NFL 15. J.J. Watt went four straight years, from Madden NFL 14 through Madden NFL 17. Then came the longest stretch in the history of the game, when Aaron Donald received a 99 rating every year from Madden NFL 18 through Madden NFL 24 (Von Miller helped keep the streak alive of having at least one player carry over by appearing at the top in Madden NFL 17 and Madden NFL 18, before Donald took off). Last year's class of the 99 Club featured Miami Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey, 49ers tackle Trent Williams and Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Hill dropping out is not a surprise. Although the receiver is supremely talented, he had a down year in 2024. After consecutive years of over 1,700 yards receiving, Hill had just 959 yards receiving in 17 games last season. His six touchdown receptions also were tied for the lowest in his career, which first occurred in his rookie season in 2016. Despite playing in 16 games, Kelce had 823 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Both figures are the lowest of his career, not counting his rookie season in 2013, in which he only played one snap. Injuries hurt the cases of both 49ers stars on last year's list. McCaffrey played just four games in 2024 while Williams played in 10. Advertisement That leads us to Mahomes, who is widely regarded as the best quarterback in the NFL. Mahomes received a 99 rating in four of the last five Madden NFL games before this year, missing the cut only in Madden NFL 23, where he had a 95 rating. That ensuing season, Mahomes threw for a career-high 5,250 yards, 41 touchdowns, claimed league MVP honors and led the Chiefs to a Super Bowl victory over the Eagles. Now, coming off a Super Bowl loss to the Eagles, Mahomes drops from the top rating while two quarterbacks, Allen and Jackson, get their first-ever 99 rating. In last year's NFL Top 100 list, which the players vote on, Jackson was the top-ranked quarterback at No. 2 overall, while Mahomes came just behind at No. 4 overall. In 2020, Jackson was the top overall player on the NFL's Top 100 list, while Mahomes was No. 4. Mahomes has been the top player on the list twice, in 2021 and 2023. So, this isn't foreign territory for Mahomes, especially as it relates to coming behind Jackson in a league-wide ranking. Jackson and Allen being the highest-rated quarterbacks in the game this year is well-deserved and shouldn't come as a surprise after the two had a tight race for league MVP honors last season, which Allen narrowly won. However, Mahomes' ability to perform in the most significant moments is indisputable, as evidenced by his dominance in the AFC. Even in a down year in 2024 as a full-season starter, Mahomes' 3,928 passing yards were the lowest of his career, and his 26 touchdown passes were tied for the lowest of his career. However, Mahomes led his team to the Super Bowl. The Chiefs beat Allen's Bills in the AFC Championship Game, after the Bills defeated Jackson's Ravens in the round before. The year before, Mahomes beat Allen's Bills in the divisional round before taking care of Jackson's Ravens in the conference championship. Overall, Mahomes' presence has given the Chiefs a stranglehold on the AFC, a conference that also features Allen, Jackson and Joe Burrow. Aside from a one-year Burrow cameo in the Super Bowl, it's been Mahomes on the biggest stage for more than half a decade.

Minnesota Vikings' Justin Jefferson joins exclusive club for Madden 26

The Madden video game has become a staple and one of the most culturally significant video games in the industry's history. So many others have come and gone, but the game that dons the name of the legendary coach and broadcaster remains the king of the sports video game mountain. Now, a fun aspect of the game that has become a special time for fans and players alike is when the game unveils its highest-rated players. The highest rating a player can achieve is 99 overall, the same applies to their traits. In one instance, Devin Hester earned a 100 speed rating, but other than that, no one has touched the triple digits, so 99 overall remains an achievement each player in the NFL holds dear. For Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson, he is a member of the 99 club for the third time in his career. Jefferson is joined by Lane Johnson, Lamar Jackson, Saquon Barkley, Josh Allen, Ja'Marr Chase, and Myles Garrett. While Jefferson may be missing time during training camp and the preseason, he is at least making his impact felt on video game players on the virtual field.
