Balasore: A grieving tribal man was forced to carry his daughter's body on a trolley rickshaw for nearly 6 km due to financial constraints in Bindhani Sahi village under Baliapal police limits in Balasore district.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with photos and videos of the body being transported on the trolley going viral on social media. The visuals have triggered sharp criticism over the alleged apathy of the police and local administration.
According to reports, 19-year-old Nandini Bindhani died by suicide following a domestic dispute. She had reportedly left home in distress and was later found hanging in a nearby village on Thursday evening.
Upon receiving information, Baliapal police reached the spot and seized the body. However, instead of arranging transportation for the post-mortem, police allegedly left the responsibility to the bereaved family.
Madhu Bindhani, the victim's father and a daily-wage labourer, said he could not afford the Rs 1,200 required to hire an ambulance. Left with no alternative, he borrowed a trolley from a villager and transported his daughter's body to the Baliapal community health centre, located about 6 km away.
However, Panimani Soren, the investigating officer in the case, claimed that it was Madhu Bindhani who expressed his willingness to transport the body on a trolley when no ambulance was available.
In response to the controversy, collector (Balasore) Suryawanshi Mayur Vikas stated, "Upon receiving information about the incident, the tehsildar and BDO of Baliapal coordinated with the sarpanch and PEO of Deula to arrange a vehicle for the cremation." He said financial assistance of Rs 10,000 has been provided to the bereaved family under the Harishchandra Yojana through the Red Cross Fund.
