The Edmonton Oilers have made a big move right before the free agent window opens. Fans were wondering what the team would do next. The news came out on Monday, but not directly from the team at first.
Reports started spreading quickly online. Everyone began talking about one name, Evan Bouchard. His future with the Oilers was uncertain, but now a big decision has been made that surprised many fans and experts.
Evan Bouchard signs long-term deal to stay with Edmonton Oilers
On Monday, July 1, 2025, Evan Bouchard, a top defenseman for the Edmonton Oilers, signed a four-year contract worth $42 million. This was confirmed by trusted outlets like Sportsnet and TSN. The deal comes just one day before the NHL free agent market officially opens on Tuesday.
Bouchard was about to become a restricted free agent.
The 25-year-old player from Oakville, Ontario, will now earn an average of $10.5 million each season, a major increase from his last contract's $3.9 million cap hit. Bouchard was drafted 10th overall by Edmonton in 2018 and has become a key part of the team's success. He helped lead the Oilers to back-to-back Stanley Cup Final appearances.
Last season, Bouchard had a career-best performance with 18 goals and 64 assists in 81 games.
He followed that with 32 points in 25 playoff games. Only one defenseman in NHL history, Bobby Orr, has a higher average for points per playoff game than Bouchard's 1.08.
Evan Bouchard's playoff success and team future
Evan Bouchard's strong shot from the blue line, known as the 'Bouch Bomb,' has become one of Edmonton's best weapons. After the deal, many fans and experts praised the team's decision to keep him long term. Bouchard has not made a public statement yet, but Oilers insider Mark Spector tweeted, 'Big win for the Oilers.
Bouchard is a core piece.'
Also on Monday, the Oilers signed winger Kasperi Kapanen to a one-year, $1.3 million deal. Kapanen had 13 points in 57 regular-season games and added 6 in the playoffs. The team also signed Noah Philp, a center, to a one-year, two-way contract worth $775,000.
Edmonton forwards Corey Perry, Connor Brown, and Jeff Skinner, and defenseman John Klingberg, are still not signed. Star player Connor McDavid becomes eligible to sign an extension on Tuesday. His current contract has one year left.

'We judge women very harshly': Jane Macdougall exposes lasting damage from fake NHL affair rumor with Kirk McLean

Jane Macdougall exposes lasting damage from fake NHL affair rumor with Kirk McLean (Image via Getty) A rumor that started nearly 30 years ago in the hockey world still follows one woman today. Many fans of the Vancouver Canucks remember the heartbreaking 1994 Stanley Cup Final loss. But what happened the next year changed more than just the team's record. A false story spread around a player's personal life and it stuck to someone who wasn't even involved at the time. Jane Macdougall reveals how a hockey rumour followed her for decades In 1995, after the Vancouver Canucks were eliminated from playoff contention, fans were looking for someone to blame. A false rumour began spreading that defenseman Jeff Brown had an affair with Kirk McLean's wife. This was said to be the reason Brown was suddenly traded in the middle of the season. Jane Macdougall, a Canadian writer and broadcaster, was not even part of McLean's life during that time. The story, however, somehow attached itself to her years later. She and McLean got married in 1998, after he had already divorced his first wife, Lesley Shaddock. Jane spoke about the experience in 2024 on CBC Radio's Storylines, explaining how this rumor shaped her life for years. 'In some people's minds, I wasn't just a homewrecker. I was a franchise wrecker,' she said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Lesley Shaddock and Jeff Brown both denied the story. Jeff Brown also said he barely knew McLean's wives and believed his trade was because of issues with coach Rick Ley. Jeff Brown Kirk McLean and Jane Macdougall speak on the lasting harm After the 1994 Game 7 loss to the New York Rangers, fans expected the Canucks to return stronger in 1995. But when the team struggled, people looked for reasons. NHL Rumors: Corey Perry's future with Oilers in serious doubt as cap crunch threatens veteran's return

Corey Perry's time with the Edmonton Oilers may be nearing its end, not because of performance, but due to a tight financial squeeze. While the 39-year-old winger is eager to return for another run at the Stanley Cup, the Oilers' current salary cap situation makes a new deal increasingly complicated. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Cap space clash may force Corey Perry onto the open market insider Pierre LeBrun recently revealed that although Perry wants to re-sign, progress has stalled. 'Corey Perry still hopes to re-sign in Edmonton, but the pathway to common ground on a deal has been difficult with the Oilers' cap situation,' LeBrun said. 'It's very possible Perry ends up on the free-agent market on Tuesday, but the door remains open with Edmonton.' The Oilers currently sit with just $12.3 million in cap space and multiple pending free agents to address. One of the biggest priorities is locking up young star defenseman Evan Bouchard to a long-term extension — a move that may leave little room for Perry's desired raise. According to team insider Bob Stauffer, Perry is looking for a two-year deal worth between $2 million and $2.5 million annually. 'I'm hearing Perry's looking for 2 (years) and 2.5,' Stauffer noted. 'Given where Edmonton's at, could they go there on Corey Perry, at 2 to $2.5M for a 40-year-old player?' Corey Perry's impact goes beyond stats While Perry played under 12 minutes per game last season, he still tallied 19 goals and 30 points in 81 regular season games — plus 10 more points in the playoffs. But it's not just the numbers that matter. His leadership, veteran presence, and playoff experience have been invaluable to Edmonton's locker room. 'This is a good team, and there are some good things ahead,' Perry said after Edmonton's Stanley Cup Final loss to Florida. 'Hopefully it's here, and hopefully we can figure something out and get something done.'
