A rumor that started nearly 30 years ago in the hockey world still follows one woman today. Many fans of the Vancouver Canucks remember the heartbreaking 1994 Stanley Cup Final loss.
But what happened the next year changed more than just the team's record. A false story spread around a player's personal life and it stuck to someone who wasn't even involved at the time.
Jane Macdougall
reveals how a hockey rumour followed her for decades
In 1995, after the Vancouver Canucks were eliminated from playoff contention, fans were looking for someone to blame. A false rumour began spreading that defenseman Jeff Brown had an affair with Kirk McLean's wife. This was said to be the reason Brown was suddenly traded in the middle of the season.
Jane Macdougall, a Canadian writer and broadcaster, was not even part of McLean's life during that time. The story, however, somehow attached itself to her years later. She and McLean got married in 1998, after he had already divorced his first wife, Lesley Shaddock.
Jane spoke about the experience in 2024 on CBC Radio's Storylines, explaining how this rumor shaped her life for years.
'In some people's minds, I wasn't just a homewrecker. I was a franchise wrecker,'
she said.

Lesley Shaddock and Jeff Brown both denied the story. Shaddock, who now lives in Ontario, said, 'I actually laughed the first time I heard it. It was just so silly.' Jeff Brown also said he barely knew McLean's wives and believed his trade was because of issues with coach Rick Ley.
Jeff Brown Kirk McLean and Jane Macdougall speak on the lasting harm
After the 1994 Game 7 loss to the New York Rangers, fans expected the Canucks to return stronger in 1995. But when the team struggled, people looked for reasons.
The rumor, which spread through word of mouth and later on internet forums like Reddit, gave fans a story, one that wasn't true but easy to believe.
Macdougall says she hears comments even now.
'I had inherited the rumor,' she said. 'It's like a demon. It just needs a host.'
Her kids were bullied, strangers whispered, and even co-workers brought it up.

Kirk McLean, now a Canucks ambassador, said fans didn't understand the mental toll of the 1994 loss. 'You try to regroup, but it doesn't mean you get back to the finals,' he said.
Jane Macdougall says she's not a victim but has seen firsthand how harmful stories like this can be.
'We judge women very harshly,'
she said.

IND vs ENG: 'You cannot pick and choose' - Ex-India pacer takes a jibe at Jasprit Bumrah for skipping Edgbaston Test

BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND - JUNE 30: Jasprit Bumrah of India during a net session at Edgbaston on June 30, 2025 in Birmingham, England. (Photo by) Former India cricketer Irfan Pathan has slammed Jasprit Bumrah for not playing in the second Test against England at Edgbaston. 'If you are selected in the Indian team, you cannot pick and choose (which match to play) to manage your workload,' Pathan said on Sony Sports. 'There is no other bowler like him, he is world-class. But here, you are not missing the match because of injury but for 'workload management'. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! "Now Akash Deep will take his place and be expected to do well as soon as he comes in — and maybe he does — but any bowler needs time to settle in. That continuity is needed.' Pathan also requested the selectors to look past both Bumrah and Shami in the red-ball format. 'This is why I have been saying that Indian cricket has to start thinking about playing without Bumrah and (Mohammed) Shami. They have to start planning for playing without them in Test cricket,' said Pathan. EXCLUSIVE | David Gower on Shubman Gill, Jasprit Bumrah and India's England tour 'The main fast bowler of the lineup cannot play all five Tests overseas, so firstly, India don't have Bumrah's services throughout the series, and secondly, his replacement, a younger player, is only getting a chance to play when he doesn't. So he does not have stability,' he said. "This is the only overseas five-match series of the new World Test Championship cycle. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo This was the series in which Bumrah was needed most. If he had a niggle or an injury, I would understand. But just to manage his workload? Then I don't think this is coming to India's advantage,' he said. India captain Shubman Gill provided a detailed insight into the mindset behind India's approach and the host of changes his side has made for the contest during the toss. 'No Bumrah. Just to manage his workload. We did get a good break, and this is an important match for us. But with the third Test being at Lord's, we think there'll be more in that pitch, so we'll use him there. We were tempted to play Kuldeep, but looking at the last match, our lower order didn't do well, so we decided to add some depth to the batting,' Gill said at the toss. How Bill Zito pulled off the impossible: Panthers keep Brad Marchand, Sam Bennett and Aaron Ekblad under cap but lose key free agents

Panthers shut down free agency rumors by locking in Marchand, Bennett, and Ekblad (Image via: Getty Images) The Florida Panthers have successfully retained Brad Marchand, Sam Bennett, and Aaron Ekblad before the 2025 NHL free agency window opened. With just $19 million in available cap space, GM Bill Zito faced serious doubts. But the Panthers managed to secure long-term deals with their core stars, though not without losing important contributors from their championship-winning roster. Florida Panthers re-sign Marchand, Bennett and Ekblad Despite NHL free agency speculation Despite public skepticism, GM Bill Zito stayed true to his word about spending to the NHL salary cap to keep his core intact. Brad Marchand, coming off a Conn Smythe-winning postseason, signed a six-year deal worth $5.25 million annually. Sam Bennett agreed to an $8 million AAV deal, while defenseman Aaron Ekblad committed to an eight-year extension. Marchand and Bennett were both linked to the Toronto Maple Leafs during early speculation, while reports also suggested the Boston Bruins were interested in bringing Marchand back. Ekblad was rumored to be a target for the Utah Mammoth. But all three made their intention clear—they wanted to stay in Florida. Bill Zito: Florida Panthers GM Talks Signing the Big 3, Free Agency, Where He's Taking the Cup Zito downplayed his role in the deals, saying it was the players who made the choice. 'It was those guys,' he told reporters. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 모공각화증, 자꾸 긁지말고 '이렇게' 해보세요 현명한소비자 Undo The front office's ability to retain its core sets the Panthers up to challenge for a third straight Stanley Cup. The Panthers lost two key depth players—Nico Sturm and Nate Schmidt—who played important roles in their 2025 Cup run. Sturm, a two-time Stanley Cup champion, returned to the Minnesota Wild, the team where he began his NHL career. Schmidt signed a three-year, $10.5 million contract with the Utah Mammoth after joining Florida on a one-year, $800,000 deal. Both losses hurt Florida's depth, but the top-heavy strategy reflects a win-now mindset. The Panthers are aiming to become the first team in the salary cap era to win three straight Stanley Cups. Only the Pittsburgh Penguins (2009, 2016, 2017) and Chicago Blackhawks (2010, 2013, 2015) have won three during this period—though never in consecutive years. Also Read: Alex Delvecchio, Detroit Red Wings legend and 3-time Stanley Cup champion, dies at 93 The Panthers' cap management, star loyalty, and proven leadership give them a real shot at history, even if depth remains a question heading into the 2025–26 season. Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav and Sai Sudharsan are not in the squad for the 2nd Test (Image via Getty Images) India have rung in the changes for the second Test against England at Edgbaston, with batter Sai Sudharsan dropped and the exclusion of Kuldeep Yadav stirring debate among fans and pundits alike. England, who lead the five-match series 1-0, won the toss and opted to bowl first on a pitch expected to assist early seam movement. Sudharsan, who scored 0 and then 30 in the first Test at Headingley, has made way as India sought to recalibrate their top order. The 23-year-old's debut outing was underwhelming, and with the pressure of a must-win encounter, the management opted for a reshuffle. 03:31 Late selection meeting between Gautam Gambhir, Shubman Gill and Ajit Agarkar near pitch? Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has also been rested, as part of his workload management. His absence has opened the door for the inclusion of Akash Deep, with Shardul Thakur also making way. The duo's exit has seen Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy included in the XI, bringing in both versatility and fresh energy. Poll Do you agree with India's decision to drop Sai Sudharsan for the second Test? Yes, he needed more time No, it was the right call However, what has caught the most attention is the continued omission of wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav.
