31 digital hubs launched to boost internet access in public schools
In a major step toward closing the digital divide in education, the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) are ramping up efforts to connect all public schools to the internet by the end of 2025.
The launch of 31 new digital connection points under Phases 2 and 3 of the National Fiber Backbone (NFB) is seen as a key driver in this push, expanding access across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. led the official launch of the NFB expansion on July 7 in Leyte, affirming the administration's goal to bring affordable, fast, and reliable internet to underserved communities and schools, especially in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs).

(More than 600 government offices will have fast and reliable internet. Around 17 million Filipinos will benefit from this. And once the National Fiber Backbone is complete, we may even reduce costs with telcos and internet providers because we will have our own infrastructure. More affordable internet means more Filipinos connected.)
Among the top beneficiaries of the expansion are public schools, many of which still struggle with poor or no internet connection. Of the nearly 47,000 schools nationwide, thousands remain unserved or underserved, especially in remote provinces.
With the addition of 31 new connection hubs, more schools will gain access to critical bandwidth for learning, teaching, and administration.
DepEd said the fiber backbone is already transforming learning environments under its Digital Bayanihan Project, launched in partnership with DICT. The program targets last-mile schools with free WiFi, mobile data, and digital support.
One such success story is Bay-ang National High School in Ajuy, Iloilo. Previously labeled a 'dead spot,' the school now has working internet access for the first time. Teachers are able to submit online reports, conduct ICT classes, and access e-learning tools on campus.
Aside from fiber expansion, the government is deploying short-term digital solutions. The Bayanihan SIM Program began its rollout on June 27 in Bulacan, Zambales, and Quezon, providing free SIM cards with mobile data to over 113,000 learners, 3,800 teachers, and 357 public schools.
Looking ahead, the PSIP Connect project—part of the broader PPP for School Infrastructure—will deliver devices, solar-powered internet solutions, and satellite connectivity to underserved schools beginning in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Education Secretary Sonny Angara emphasized that digital connectivity is a non-negotiable part of delivering quality education in the 21st century.
'Hindi natin mapapalago ang kalidad ng edukasyon kung hindi konektado ang ating mga paaralan sa mundo. Sa direktiba ni President Marcos at sa tulong ng DICT at ng buong pamahalaan, isinusulong natin ang digital inclusion na tunay na may malasakit,' said Angara.

'We encourage our Filipino sailors to avoid sailing in the Red Sea while the situation remains dangerous,' Lazaro said in a press briefing. All 17 Filipino seamen from the Magic Sea survived the assault, while eight were rescued from the Eternity, including the Filipino captain. The fate of the rest of the 13 of the 21 Filipinos from the Eternity was unknown amid reports that the rebels took several hostages from the sunken vessel. Houthis have repeatedly targeted ships it claims have links to Israel and have vowed to step up attacks until the country ends its aggression in Gaza. Lazaro said the DFA and its diplomatic posts, along with the Department of Migrant Workers, are coordinating with relevant agencies for the rescue of the missing Filipinos. Manila is also in touch with Saudi Arabia and the UK, as well as the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO), she added. 'The DFA continues to advocate for the rights, safety, and decent conditions for our seafarers,' Lazaro said. Piracy and ransom kidnappings of Filipino sailors, particularly in waters off Africa, have long been a problem for the Philippine government, as it cannot monitor their movements when at sea. The Philippines is one of the world's largest providers of shipping manpower. Marcos to stay at historic Blair House during summit with Trump in DC
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will stay at the historic Blair House across the White House in Pennsylvania Avenue during his three-day visit to Washington for his first-ever meeting with US President Donald Trump later this month, Foreign Affairs Secretary Theresa Lazaro said Monday. The famous residence is the official guest house of the US President for visiting heads of state and other dignitaries and has hosted notable world leaders, including Queen Elizabeth II and Nelson Mandela, according to the White House website. Heads of states and governments are usually invited to the guest house "at the pleasure of the President," it added. Blair House also serves as the temporary home of the president-elect before the inauguration ceremonies in preparation for the administration's move into the White House. "Just wanted to say that it is President Trump who invited President Marcos to this meeting and probably the first if I am correct the first among the ASEAN leaders who have been invited by the president to the White House. It is an official visit, but he will be staying in the presidential guest house, the Blair House, so that means something," Lazaro told reporters in her first press briefing as Secretary of Foreign Affairs. Philippine Ambassador to Washington Jose Manuel Romualdez, in a separate interview, said Marcos' official working visit was relayed to the Philippine Embassy in Washington with the invitation for him to stay at Blair House. The Blair House complex has approximately 109 rooms, including 15 guest rooms, each with a full bathroom, three formal dining rooms, two large conference rooms, a hot and cold kitchen, a beauty salon, an exercise room, and an in-house laundry facility. Details of the summit between Marcos and Trump are still being finalized, Lazaro said, but defense and security amid increasing Chinese aggression in the disputed South China Sea, US tariffs and economic cooperation are likely to figure in their discussions. America has repeatedly vowed to defend the Philippines - its long-time treaty ally in Asia - against armed attacks on Philippine forces, vessels, or aircraft, including those of the coast guard, anywhere in the South China Sea, The US, Japan, and the Philippines forged a trilateral bloc to boost security, economic and investment engagements. Such alliances would help Japan and the Philippines, which both face similar territorial disputes with China, diversify their trading engagements as a buffer in case the disputes spill into the economic front. Marcos commits to further opening PH to foreign tourists
President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. on Monday vowed to further open the Philippines to international tourists. Marcos made the remark during the groundbreaking ceremony of the Caticlan Passenger Terminal Building in Nabas, Aklan. He underscored that the influx of travelers would be a big boost to the local and national economy. ''Tourism right now contributes close to eight percent to our GDP. And that is something that we want to increase and that is why these projects that we have are also very important,'' Marcos said in his speech. ''We are doing the same things for many regional airports. We have been talking about the Iloilo. We have made agreements in Bohol, in Siargao, and there will be others more. Ngayon ay pinag-uusapan pa lang. So, I don't want to let the cat out of the bag because they are still in discussions,'' he added. Marcos said the idea is to open up the country, not only through Manila, but also through international flights coming from Europe and other Southeast Asian countries. ''And in this case, maganda — tama 'yung nabanggit kanina that it is better here because the ferry experience is very important and very much part of the experience of a… I remember coming here as a vacationer. And pagsakay mo sa bangka, ito na, bakasyon na ito. This is where the vacation starts,'' he shared. Marcos said the administration wants to bring the Philippines to the top of mind of the rest of the world, that this is a place where people can invest and have their vacation. The two-storey Passenger Terminal Building will have a total floor area of 36,470 square meters with six passenger boarding bridges and 36 individual check-in counters. It is projected to accommodate seven million passengers per year, with a simultaneous capacity of 3,000 passengers at any given time. The target completion date for the project is 2027.
