Bahrain Space Agency participates in Middle East space law launch event
The event discussed the Middle East's role in global space governance, the potential of legal frameworks to support strategic opportunities, and the importance of space law in fostering international cooperation.
Representing the agency, Rasha Al Emad, Head of Strategic Planning, delivered a presentation outlining the Kingdom of Bahrain's efforts in developing a national regulatory framework for space. She highlighted the importance of such frameworks in shaping Arab space governance and concluded with insights to support Arab countries in drafting their own national legislation.
Mohamed Ibrahim Al Aseeri, CEO of the Bahrain Space Agency, noted the agency's ongoing efforts to raise awareness on space law in the Arab world and to foster knowledge exchange in line with its strategic objectives.
Al Emad added that the evolving global space sector now includes a wider range of actors beyond major powers, stressing that legal framework are central to innovation, investment, safety, and international cooperation. She highlighted Bahrain's progress, from the royal decree establishing the agency, to ratifying UN treaties, joining international agreements such as the Artemis Accords, and drafting national legislation covering licensing, liability, insurance, spectrum use, and orbital debris.
The Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences (AUASS), founded in 1998 in Amman, Jordan, works to advance space and astronomy sciences in the Arab world by organising workshops and seminars, and strengthening collaboration with academic and research institutions.

Kuwait To Replace 591 Street Names With Numbers Under New Naming Policy
Kuwait has approved the replacement of hundreds of street names with numerical identifiers, phasing out personal names from most roads and squares across the country. The decision aims to implement a uniform and depersonalised system for naming public areas. The initiative was formally endorsed by Kuwait's Committee for Studying Proposals and Requests for Naming Cities, Suburbs, Districts, Streets, and Public Squares during a meeting held on June 23. The meeting was chaired by Acting Director-General of the Municipality, Engineer Manal Al Asfour. According to local media reports, the committee approved the renaming of 591 streets to numerical labels. An additional three streets will be named after Arab capitals or cities, in accordance with the latest Cabinet directives. The effort stems from a May 20, 2025, Cabinet decision that mandates the use of numbers instead of personal names on streets and public locations. While the Cabinet guidelines allow for some flexibility, including naming public spaces after historical figures, Kuwaiti ruling family members, or leaders of allied nations, such cases will now be subject to stricter scrutiny and will generally require reciprocity from the countries involved. Naming public areas after individuals will be significantly limited going forward. Instead, a default numbering system will be applied to new and existing roads, with exceptions granted only for cases deemed diplomatically or historically significant. Existing names that do not reference individuals are expected to be retained. The Cabinet has formally approved the proposed naming framework and has directed the Minister of State for Municipal Affairs to present the amendments to the Municipal Council for final adoption.

Arab Youth Rising Bahrain urges cooperation
TDT| Manama Bahrain has called for stronger Arab unity and deeper investment in youth empowerment as countries across the region mark Arab Youth Day on Saturday. The annual occasion is seen as a chance to recognise young people's role in shaping the region's future. Minister of Youth Affairs Rawan bint Najeeb Tawfiqi said the Kingdom is guided by the vision of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister. She noted that youth form the core of any true renaissance and are essential to sustainable national progress. 'All institutions in Bahrain are working to create an environment where young people can realise their full potential and contribute meaningfully to society,' the minister said. Tawfiqi also highlighted the leadership of His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, HM the King's Representative for Humanitarian Work and Youth Affairs. She credited his youth-driven vision and programmes for unlocking innovation, leadership, and social responsibility across Bahrain and the Arab world. The minister called for closer Arab coordination to align policies, share knowledge, and foster a new generation equipped to lead with confidence and vision. She expressed pride in Bahraini and Arab youth who are committed to building communities, serving others, and advancing their nations.

Arab Students Access China's MIT
TDT | Manama Six students from Arab League nations have been awarded places at China's top-ranked Tsinghua University through a landmark new scholarship programme, marking the first time the prestigious institution has offered a dedicated scholarship exclusively for Arab students. The Hazem Ben- Gacem Arab Scholars Program, officially launched at a ceremony in Beijing on Monday, will support up to 15 students each year over the next five years for both undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Tsinghua, widely regarded as the 'MIT of China,' is known for its elite engineering and technology programmes and its alumni include many of China's current leaders. Historic initiative The scholarship was launched in the presence of diplomats and senior officials, including Bahrain's Ambassador to China, H.E. Dr Mohamed Shaikho and Professor Yang Bin, Vice Chancellor of the Tsinghua University Council. Organisers say the initiative aims to promote academic excellence, build cross-cultural ties, and enhance the strategic relationship between China and the Arab world. 'This programme reflects more than just academic support,' said Hazem Ben-Gacem, the founder of the scholarship and Chief Executive of BlueFive Capital. 'For more than a thousand years, the Arab region and China have been bound by a vibrant exchange of goods, knowledge, and cultural dialogue. We aim to cultivate leaders who will carry forward this agelong spirit of curiosity and collaboration.' Ben-Gacem, who formerly served as co-CEO of Investcorp, has previously established scholarships at Harvard, Oxford, and other top global institutions. His latest effort is seen as part of a growing trend of Arab investment in education diplomacy and global talent development. Shared values Tsinghua University officials described the programme as a milestone in the institution's global engagement. 'This initiative not only motivates recipients to pursue academic excellence but also strengthens the friendship between Tsinghua and the Arab world,' said Professor Yang. 'It embodies the shared values of openness, inclusiveness, mutual respect, and the pursuit of common progress.' Established in 1911, Tsinghua has 20 colleges and 90 undergraduate programmes.
