Man guilty of all charges in 2023 DUI crash on E Belle Terrace that killed passenger
Court records show Cristian Escobar-Rodriguez was convicted Thursday of the manslaughter charge, two counts of DUI causing injury and driving without a license for the single-vehicle crash just east of Bunting Drive which killed a woman and injured three other occupants, including himself.
Sentencing is set for July 1.
At about 1:50 a.m. on April 3, 2023, California Highway Patrol officers responded to the crash scene and found a black Dodge Charger lying on the driver's side with four people inside.
A 30-year-old woman in the back seat was pronounced dead at the scene.
Escobar-Rodriguez was seated in the driver's seat, reports say. Removed from the car and placed on a stretcher, Rodriguez said, 'I'm sorry, I'm sorry,' according to court documents.
An officer noticed an 'overwhelming' odor of alcohol coming from Escobar-Rodriguez, and that his eyes were red and watery, documents said.
Interviewed at Kern Medical, Escobar-Rodriguez told an investigator he'd been driving 60 mph and failed to negotiate a curve in the road. He told an officer he'd drunk five Dos Equis beers.

CHP investigating Highway 4 road rage shooting near Concord
The California Highway Patrol said a driver on Highway 4 near Concord was shot at while driving Wednesday afternoon. Around 2:20 p.m., the victim called 911 and reported a shooting during a road rage incident on eastbound Highway 4, between Willow Pass Road and San Marco Boulevard, the CHP said. The victim then used San Marco Boulevard to get off the highway and waited for first responders at a gas station. The CHP said they victim had an injury that was not life-threatening. The victim was taken to the hospital, and the CHP said it does not yet know if the victim was shot or grazed by the bullet. Detectives with the Golden Gate Division Special Investigations Unit will be at the scene.

CHP officer dies on duty after suddenly losing control of cruiser, smashing into tree
CHP Officer Miguel Cano was on duty in the wee hours of Wednesday morning. He and his partner were en route from an arrest, taking a DUI suspect to the West L.A. CHP Office, which was a few blocks away. But Cano didn't make it. Moments after telling his partner that he didn't feel well, he lost control of his patrol cruiser and smashed into a tree in Culver City. He was killed. His partner and the suspect they were transporting were injured. 'We are devastated by the loss of Officer Cano, who gave his life while serving the people of California,' said California Highway Patrol Commissioner Sean Duryee in a statement. 'His dedication, courage and commitment to public safety will never be forgotten. We stand with his family and our CHP family during this incredibly difficult time.' It was not immediately clear what caused the crash and what medical emergency Cano experienced. Duryee said the officer did not have any known health issues. Cano, a 34-year-old from Moreno Valley, had been driving south on Bristol Parkway, north of Green Valley Circle at 12:28 a.m. Wednesday, alongside his partner, who was not immediately identified. They had taken into a custody a person allegedly in possession of a firearm, possible cocaine and drug paraphernalia. They feared the suspect could be OD'ing. Cano administered Narcan as a precaution. Then the partners were headed back to the office when Cano said he didn't feel well, Duryee said. Their vehicle went off the roadway and struck a tree. Cano was rushed to UCLA Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead around 1:40 a.m. On Wednesday morning, a solemn cadre of Cano's fellow officers took part in a procession as the body was transported to the medical examiner's office. Cano's partner sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene, the CHP said. The person in custody was transported to Cedars-Sinai in Marina Del Rey by the Culver City Fire Department. Duryee said their injuries were not severe. The department's accident investigation team is leading an investigation into the incident, the CHP said. But investigators have already ruled out a possible exposure to drugs. 'We do not think this was an exposure to drugs,' Duryee said. 'The other officer and the subject did not experience any signs or symptoms related to that.' Cano, who graduated from the CHP Academy in November 2023, is survived by his wife and parents. California Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a statement that Cano's 'passing is a heartbreaking loss for the state and the California Highway Patrol.' The governor noted that this was the first line-of-duty death for the CHP since 2020 and that flags at the State Capitol would be flown at half-staff.

After all, these guys shut down busy intersections like they own the city, snarl up traffic while doing all kinds of damage, all so their buddies can record videos for TikTok and Instagram. When the trooper first happens upon the takeover in Atlanta, he encounters pedestrians standing in the intersection, as well as the Lexus ripping a smokey donut. Those people on foot smartly jump out of the way. But as the trooper starts chasing the fleeing IS 300, one pedestrian makes like he's going to jump in front of the patrol car. We can imagine he was trying to help out his buddy, but the guy apparently doesn't know that could come with serious criminal charges, not to mention he might get run over. Needless to say, even as far as takeover crowds come, these kids aren't the brightest crayons in the box. That's evident as the driver thinks his little Lexus can outrun a Dodge Charger with a Hemi. Then again, the street takeover crowd tries to act like car enthusiasts, but we've found they know little about cars. If they did and valued them, they wouldn't be trashing their rides for cheap thrills. Maybe this guy thought his experience doing tricks in intersections would make him a better driver than a member of Georgia State Patrol. But the trooper keeps up no problem. In fact, we're pretty sure he doesn't have to push his cruiser all that hard. But it's apparent the suspect is planting his foot down in the little Lexus while his hazard lights are flashing. Finally, after trying to use the might of all six cylinders of his car, he finally realizes that's not going to cut the mustard. That's when the guy starts making quick turns, but he still can't outhandle the trooper who PITs the IS out. As the suspect drives out of that, another trooper comes along and PITs the Lexus again. Surrounded by at least three troopers, the kid and his passenger give up. Hopefully they both realized street takeovers are a dumb idea.
