Fulton invited to Timberwolves pre-draft workout
Belfast basketball player CJ Fulton has been invited to a pre-draft workout camp with NBA side Minnesota Timberwolves.The 22-year-old guard becomes the third Irish-born player to earn the chance to compete at the highest level in the United States after Pat Burke and Susan Moran. Burke played for Orlando Magic and Phoenix Suns in the NBA between 2002 and 2007 while Moran was part of the New York Liberty squad during the 2002 WNBA season. Fulton will have the opportunity to impress the Timberwolves coaches before this year's NBA draft on 25-26 June.The son of former Ireland international Adrian Fulton, CJ formerly played for St Malachy's College and Belfast Star, helping the latter win the Basketball Ireland Super League title for the first time in 21 years in 2020. He moved to the Winchendon School in Boston before securing a collegiate scholarship with Pennsylvania-based Lafayette University.Following a move to Charleston Cougars, he made his debut in college basketball's 'March Madness' tournament in 2024 after helping his side win the CAA Conference Tournament.The Minnesota Timberwolves have reached the NBA's Western Conference finals in each of the past two seasons, losing the best-of-seven series to the Dallas Mavericks and Oklahoma City Thunder.The Timberwolves roster includes three-time All-Star guard Anthony Edwards, the NBA's number one draft pick in 2020.

It gives handouts to industries of the past while severely damaging industries of the future.' Trump's massive spending bill was notably the trigger for Musk and the president's dramatic fall out just three weeks ago, with Musk taking issue with the bill's estimated $2.8 trillion spending increases. Musk - who celebrated his 54th birthday Saturday as he slammed Trump's bill - also criticized the impact the bill will have on the energy industry, with Musk recently pushing for a sharp increase in solar energy in the US. Responding to a post that noted the Senate vote 'could wipe out 500 (Giga Watts) of potential energy generation' by 2030, Musk wrote: 'This would be incredibly destructive to America!' 'At the same time, this bill raises the debt ceiling by $5 TRILLION, the biggest increase in history, putting America in the fast lane to debt slavery!' he added in another post. Earlier this month, Musk's opposition to the legislation saw his time in Trump's White House come to an acrimonious end as he tore into the president. Musk had spent the start of the year slashing the federal government's programs through his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), but saw the $150 billion he claimed to have saved wiped out by the spending increases in Trump's bill. In a shock X post that captured international headlines, Musk vented his fury by writing: '(Trump) is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!' Musk also claimed that Trump couldn't have won the 2024 presidential election without him, and said in a post that Trump's bill showed 'such ingratitude.' White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told the Daily Mail at the time: 'This is an unfortunate episode from Elon, who is unhappy with the One Big Beautiful Bill because it does not include the policies he wanted.' Trump's sweeping Big Beautiful Bill encapsulates much of his domestic agenda, covering everything from tax breaks and immigration to national defense and energy. Democrats are united against the bill, with Congressional Republicans - who hold majorities in both the House and Senate - set to decide whether President Trump's signature's domestic policy package will become law. Trump told Republicans to skip their holiday vacations and deliver the bill by the Fourth of July. Republicans say the bill is crucial because there would be a massive tax increase after December when tax breaks from Trump's first term expire. The legislation contains roughly $3.8 trillion in tax cuts. The existing tax rates and brackets would become permanent under the bill. It temporarily would add new tax breaks that Trump campaigned on: no taxes on tips, overtime pay or some automotive loans, along with a bigger $6,000 deduction in the Senate draft for older adults who earn no more than $75,000 a year. It would boost the $2,000 child tax credit to $2,200 under the Senate proposal. Families at lower income levels would not see the full amount. The bill would also fund the hiring of 10,000 new Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers, and would provide Homeland Security with a new $10 billion fund for grants for states that help with federal immigration enforcement and deportation actions. For the Pentagon, the bill would provide billions for ship building, munitions systems, and quality of life measures for servicemen and women, as well as $25 billion for the development of the Golden Dome missile defense system. The Defense Department would have $1 billion for border security. To help partly offset the lost tax revenue and new spending, Republicans aim to cut back some long-running government programs: Medicaid, food stamps, green energy incentives and others. It's essentially unraveling the accomplishments of the past two Democratic presidents, Biden and Barack Obama.

Chelsea's bid to reach the Club World Cup quarter-finals was delayed as their clash with Benfica in Charlotte was interrupted by a thunderstorm on Saturday. It is the latest of a number of matches in the tournament to have been paused because of a thunderstorm. The winner of the game, when completed, will face Brazilian side Palmeiras in Philadelphia on Friday.

There's been a worrying update on Shedeur Sanders' NFL future as the Cleveland Browns prepare to name their starting quarterback later this summer. Sanders, who infamously fell to the fifth round of the NFL Draft before Cleveland selected him, is part of a crowded Browns' quarterback room which also includes Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel and the injured Deshaun Watson. But according to former wide receiver TJ Houshmandzadeh, Sanders is not even in the running to win the top job. 'I was told from somebody that is in the building that ain't a player, it's really coming down to Kenny Pickett or Dillon Gabriel,' Houshmandzadeh said on the Nightcap podcast. 'That's what I was told. But now when you get the reports that Shedeur's completing seven out of nine passes - is it against starters? 'Or is it against the threes and the fours, the guys that are going to get released? So it seems impressive when you see the graphic, but is it really if it's not against the starters or guys that are going to be on the team?' During a minicamp practice on June 10, Sanders reportedly completed 10 of 12 passes and threw two touchdowns. However, ESPN's Daniel Oyefusi previously reported that Sanders' roster spot isn't 'guaranteed' after the Browns were able to select him with the No. 144 pick. Additionally, Ashley Bastock previously opined that Sanders was fourth in the quarterback pecking order - behind Pickett, Gabriel and Flacco in that order - after observing minicamp. Nonetheless, head coach Kevin Stefanski was previously full of praise for both Sanders and Gabriel. 'Those guys are doing great,' Stefanski said earlier this month. 'They are both wired to get in early, stay late, put in whatever work is required. They're sponges in the meeting room, which I think is really fun for me.' Sanders' plunge in the NFL Draft came after he chose not to throw for teams at the Combine and reportedly rubbed teams the wrong way during interviews. And aside from the tricky situation Sanders now finds himself in, his draft freefall also cost him financially. He signed a four-year, $4.6 million deal with Cleveland that included his $447,000 signing bonus – which represents the only guaranteed portion of the deal. By comparison, Titans' No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward signed a four-year, fully guaranteed $48.8million deal with Tennessee. Sanders had long been expected to be an early first-round pick before his stunning draft slide. Following OTAs and minicamp this spring, Browns training camp will begin on July 25.
