The pair had been driving to Santander from Portugal on their way to catch a ferry to the UK as the Liverpool star had been advised not to fly following lung surgery.
The funeral takes place this morning at 10am local time, which is the same as UK time, in the brothers' home town of Gondomar, Porto, close to FC Porto's Estadio do Dragão.
Many of Jota's Liverpool teammates and former teammates, including Alexis Mac Allister, Darwin Nunez, Curtis Jones, Jordan Henderson, Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson and Federico Chiesa are also attending the sombre event.
Fernandes and Dalot are joined by former United manager, José Mourinho. Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez and former head coach Fernando Santos are also in attendance along with City stars and Portugal teammates Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias.
The United skipper left a moving tribute on Instagram yesterday, saying 'Friend, colleague and comrade through many battles.

'It is difficult to understand how it is possible that someone could leave so soon.
'May you and your brother find the peace you need to look after those you lost so soon and suddenly.
'My condolences to your whole family.'
Everyone at The Peoples Person would also like to extend their condolences to his widow Rute, the children, parents Isabel and Joaquim and the whole family on their unfathomable loss.

Released Arsenal 20yo on trial in Portugal

Midfielder Jimi Gower trains with Portuguese top-flight side after leaving Arsenal at end of contract Photo via Jimi Gower, the 20-year-old midfielder released by Arsenal this summer, is currently on trial with Primeira Liga side Moreirense as he seeks to secure a contract after leaving north London. Advertisement Gower was a surprise inclusion in Vasco Botelho da Costa's first pre-season training session of 2025–26, joining a group of 24 players at the club's training ground. He is being formally assessed by the Portuguese club following the expiry of his deal with Arsenal on 30 June. Having joined Arsenal from Southend United's academy as a teenager in 2017, Gower progressed steadily through the ranks, helping the club reach the final of the 2022–23 FA Youth Cup and making 22 appearances for the under-21s last season. He scored once and registered three assists, earning a senior bench appearance for a Premier League win over Fulham and another in the Champions League against Real Madrid. Photo via Gower on Instagram Despite his consistent development and versatility – he is comfortable as a No. 8, No. 10 or deeper midfielder – the club opted not to extend his deal. Advertisement Moreirense, who finished 10th in Portugal's top tier last season, are now exploring whether the midfielder can adapt to the demands of Liga Portugal. A move to Portugal would mark his first experience abroad and could offer the technical, possession-based environment in which his attributes may flourish. No decision has yet been made on whether he will be offered a permanent contract.

(AP Photo/Alessandra Tarantino) LUCERNE, Switzerland (AP) — Netherlands great Vivianne Miedema scored her 100th goal in international soccer against Wales at the Women's European Championship on Saturday. Playing in her 126th game for the Dutch, the 28-year-old Miedema extended her national team scoring record in first-half stoppage time. Advertisement The captain curled a right-foot shot from just outside the penalty area that dipped into the far corner of the Wales net leaving goalkeeper Olivia Clark with no chance. Miedema created the space to shoot with clever skill by twice deceiving a defender when faking to strike the ball. It was a standout moment in Miedema's performance when her first touch was often heavy and she seemed to lack match fitness after an injury-hit season at Manchester City. The 2017 European champion took the lead into halftime in the opening game in Group D. ___ AP soccer:
