2025 MLB power rankings: Astros, Blue Jays red hot; 1 first-half stat for every team
They're the hottest team in baseball, but they're not the best team in the league over the past month. That honor belongs to the Astros, who are 24-8 with a plus-57 run differential since the start of June. Their latest work this weekend in Los Angeles, pulverizing the Dodgers by 23 runs over a three-game sweep, was especially eye-opening.
Was it enough for them to take the top spot in the power rankings?
Here are this week's rankings, along with one stat to help explain every team's first half.
Their defense has the most errors in MLB. Their pitchers have the worst ERA and fewest strikeouts in MLB. That's the recipe for allowing the most runs in MLB.
Their offense has the lowest batting average and OPS in MLB.
Their pitching staff has the worst ERA in the American League. Sutter Health Park is doing no favors, but their pitchers have an ERA over 5.00 on the road, too.
Their bullpen has the worst ERA in MLB. The club's struggles, despite employing young standouts James Wood, MacKenzie Gore and C.J. Abrams, have led to a changing of the guard at general manager and manager.
This might come as a shock, but a Pirates offense that just got shut out over the entire weekend in Seattle has the fewest home runs in MLB and the lowest OPS in the National League.
Credit to manager Clayton McCullough. The Marlins are a more competitive club than anyone would have thought, and a scrappy offense that's tied for the fourth-highest batting average in the N.L. is a major reason why.
The litany of pitching injuries would have probably doomed them anyway, but their offense ranks 22nd in OPS. That's a lot harder to explain.
They've lost 10 straight and have the lowest expected batting average, expected slugging percentage and hard-hit rate in MLB.
A sweep of the Braves might have them believing again, but their pitchers have surrendered a .269 batting average this year. That's the highest mark of any A.L. squad.
There are only three batters in the lineup hitting above league average (Bobby Witt Jr., Maikel Garcia, Vinnie Pasquantino). It's hard to sustain success when that's the bleak offensive reality.
The Twins offense ranks in the bottom 10 in MLB in hits, batting average, on-base percentage, OPS and walks.
Their hitters have the most strikeouts in MLB…and the second-most home runs in the A.L. The do-or-die nature of the offense has the club hovering close to .500.
Their starters (4.50) and relievers (5.06) both rank in the N.L.'s bottom five in ERA.
They have the best starters' ERA, but their offense — a group many expected to bounce back — has the fourth-lowest OPS in MLB.
The offense is starting to wake up, but their defense still has the most errors in the A.L.
Their offense has the sixth-highest OPS in the National League. Their starters have the sixth-best ERA in the N.L. The result is a club that's slightly above .500.
By outs above average, they have the best defense in MLB. That defense has also committed the third-fewest errors in MLB. Unfortunately, the offense has been held scoreless in four of the last six games.
Their bullpen has, by far, the lowest ERA of any relief group in MLB. It takes a lot for a non-closing reliever to make the All-Star team, and it's a well-deserved nod for Randy Rodriguez.
They were 25th in slugging last year. This year, they're 11th. It helps having the top home run hitter in MLB in Cal Raleigh.
The Padres have a National League-best 2.96 ERA at home but a 4.32 mark on the road. That's reflected in the team's record (27-15 at home, 21-26 on the road).
Their opportunistic offense has the most stolen bases in MLB and the highest OPS with runners in scoring position in the A.L. Their pitching, though, has struggled of late, and they've now dropped three straight series since sweeping the Royals.
Sticking with AL East squads trending the wrong direction, the Yankees have now lost seven of their last nine games despite an offense that leads the A.L. in home runs and paces MLB in barrel rate.
They may lack star power, but they have an abundance of solid players. The Brewers don't have a single qualified hitter who ranks in the top 50 in MLB in wRC+, but they have seven hitters (min. 200 plate appearances) who are above league average.
Despite dealing with a litany of pitching injuries, the Mets have the second-lowest ERA in the N.L.
They're now riding a W8 after sweeping the Yankees and Angels in a perfect homestand. The Jays have the highest home OPS in the A.L., which helps explain their 32-16 record at Rogers Centre.
How dynamic is this offense? The Cubs rank in the top three in MLB in home runs, slugging, OPS and steals.
Their starting pitchers lead MLB in strikeouts and have combined for the lowest ERA in the N.L. Zack Wheeler (2.17 ERA) is basically unhittable right now, but Cristopher Sánchez (2.68) and Ranger Suárez (1.99) give opponents no space to exhale.
It wasn't just that they got swept by the Astros; it's that they got throttled, smothered and obliterated badly enough that it had to knock them down a couple rungs. This is still the top team and offense in the National League — the Dodgers lead the N.L. in every slash line category — but life will be tougher now with Max Muncy sidelined and a plethora of contributors banged up.
Apart from employing the most talented pitcher in the sport, it's hard to say the Tigers are the best team in any one area. But they're above average basically everywhere. Among AL teams, the pitching staff ranks second in ERA and the offense ranks third in OPS.
Since dropping two of three to the Rays from May 19-21, the Astros are 30-11 and haven't lost a series. They have the most wins and the best winning percentage against teams over .500 in MLB and are 18-8 in one-run games, a testament to the strength of the back end of their bullpen. That they're doing all this without Yordan Alvarez is all the more miraculous.

Brewers outfielder Jackson Chourio placed on injured list with strained right hamstring
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers placed outfielder Jackson Chourio on the 10-day injured list Friday after evaluations of his strained right hamstring revealed more significant issues than expected. Chourio was injured Tuesday while running the bases on a triple in the fifth inning. The move to the IL was made retroactive to Wednesday. Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy said the 21-year-old Chourio will likely require more than a minimum stay on the injured list. 'It won't be anytime soon,' Murphy said before the Brewers' series opener against Washington. 'He was diagnosed a little more severely than we initially thought. To what extent, I'm not exactly sure. Nor are they. We're just going to have to rehab it.' Murphy said Chourio will receive a platelet-rich plasma injection. Chourio is hitting .276 with 17 homers, 67 RBIs and 18 steals for Milwaukee, which entered Friday with the best record in the majors at 64-44. He was replaced on the active roster by outfielder Brandon Lockridge, who the Brewers acquired Thursday from San Diego for pitcher Nestor Cortes, infielder Jorge Quintana and cash. Lockridge, who hit .216 with five RBIs in 47 games with the Padres this season, was inserted into the leadoff slot Friday against the Nationals. ___ AP MLB:

The crazy list of prospects — and eventual stars — Padres GM A.J. Preller has traded
The Padres were one of the most aggressive buyers in the 2025 MLB trade deadline. They added seven MLB players to their roster Thursday, including star reliever Mason Miller and slugging lefty Ryan O'Hearn. 10 Padres GM A.J Preller. USA TODAY Sports But to get names like those, the Padres had to give away players from their farm system — something the team hasn't been shy about over the past few years. Here is a list of some of the prospects that general manager A.J. Preller traded away in his tenure as Padres general manager. Leo De Vries 10 Leo De Vries at the All-Star Future Game Getty Images The crown jewel in the trade with the A's for Miller and starter J.P. Sears was the highest-ranked prospect traded at the deadline. According to Pipeline, De Vries — shortstop — ranks as the third-best prospect in the league. In High-A ball, De Vries has a slash line of .245/.354/.408. He is also a switch-hitter and is regarded as a good fielder and baserunner. He is only 18 years old, so there is still a lot more time to develop before his arrival in the big leagues. Trea Turner 10 Trea Turner of the Philadelphia Phillies high-fives teammates in the dugout after a run in the first inning against the Boston Red Sox. Getty Images Turner was involved in a three-team trade in 2014 that sent him to the Nationals for 2013 American League Rookie of the Year Wil Myers. At the time of the trade, Turner was the fifth-best prospect in San Diego. Today, Turner is a three-time All-Star playing in Philadelphia. He helped the Nationals win the World Series in 2019. James Wood 10 Washington Nationals James Wood after striking out. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect James Wood was the lowest-ranked piece in the trade deadline deal for Juan Soto in 2022. But it turns out that rankings don't always mean everything. At just 22, Wood is now arguably one of the best players on the Nationals today and was selected as an All-Star this year. He has 24 homers and 71 RBIs entering Friday. MacKenzie Gore 10 Washington Nationals pitcher MacKenzie Gore AP Gore was also a part of the Soto trade in 2022. This year, with the Nationals, he has the seventh-most strikeouts in MLB with 148. He also holds an ERA of 3.80 that earned him his first All-Star nod this year. CJ Abrams 10 Washington Nationals' CJ Abrams walking off the field after striking out. AP Another piece acquired in the Soto deal, Abrams has become the everyday shortstop for the Nationals. He was an All-Star in 2024, and this season he has a .275 average, 14 home runs, and an .817 OPS. Max Fried 10 New York Yankees pitcher Max Fried IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect Fried was traded to the Braves in 2014 for Justin Upton. At the time, Fried was a top-50 prospect in MLB, but was recovering from Tommy John surgery. Today, the three-time All-Star is pitching with the Yankees and is a likely Cy Young candidate. Before wearing the pinstripes, Fried was a two-time All-Star and a World Series winner in 2021 with the Braves. Andres Munoz 10 Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Andres Munoz on the mound. AP Munoz was part of a trade that sent Austin Adams, Dan Altavilla and Austin Nola to San Diego from Seattle. Today, Munoz is considered one of the best closers in the league. The two-time All-Star with an ERA of 1.32 and 24 saves. Emmanuel Clase 10 Cleveland Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase Denny Medley-Imagn Images In 2018, the Padres made a small trade with the Rangers to receive Brett Nicholas for Emmanuel Clase, who is on non-disciplinary paid leave by MLB as part of a gambling investigation. Before this, though, Clase has been one of the best relievers in the game. He was an All-Star from 2022 to 2024, and in each of those years, he was the leader in saves in the American League. Josh Naylor 10 Josh Naylor AP Naylor — along with pitcher Luis Castillo — was acquired from the Marlins in 2016 for Andrew Cashner and Colin Rea. However, Castillo was just a Padre for two days as an injury to Rea forced him back to the Marlins. Naylor, however, was traded away to the Guardians in 2020 for Mike Clevinger and Greg Allen. Naylor was an All-Star in 2024 and was traded to the Mariners by the Diamondbacks before the 2025 trade deadline.
