Congress urges State unit to launch protest against SIR in Bihar
The meeting, presided by Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, was attended by Rahul Gandhi, general secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal apart from State leaders, including Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief Rajesh Kumar.
Independent Lok Sabha member from Purnia, Pappu Yadav, was also part of the meeting.
Mr. Pappu Yadav' presence at the AICC meeting seeks to make a political point as he was not allowed to share stage along with Mr. Gandhi and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav's joint protests against the SIR in Patna on July 9.
The differences between the Purnia Lok Sabha member and the RJD leadership are well known. After the meeting, Mr. Pappu Yadav refused to acknowledge Mr. Tejashwi Yadav as the sole chief ministerial face of the RJD-Congress alliance in the State.
The PCC chief, however, played down the differences.
'There is no confusion within our alliance on any issue,' Mr. Kumar said, adding, 'All the leaders of the INDIA alliance said in one voice that we should constitute the campaigning, manifesto committee as soon as possible'.

Rahul Gandhi gets bail in controversial defamation case over remarks on Indian Army
A Lucknow court on Tuesday granted bail to Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha and Congress Member of Parliament Rahul Gandhi after he appeared in a defamation case filed over his purported remarks on Army personnel, his lawyer said. The case relates to alleged defamatory remarks against Indian soldiers made during his Bharat Jodo Yatra in 2022, his counsel, advocate Pranshu Agarwal, told news agency PTI. Following his appearance, the Additional CJM Alok Verma-led MP-MLA Court granted Gandhi relief on furnishing two bonds of ₹ 20,000 each. The bail was effected after Gandhi furnished a bail bond and sureties as directed by the court. Gandhi was summoned as an accused after the court took cognisance of the defamation complaint. The Congress leader had moved the high court but failed to get relief. Gandhi appeared in a courtroom full of lawyers. He was taken to the judge's chamber, where the formalities of filing bond and sureties took place. Congress party's state unit president Ajay Rai and in-charge Avinash Pande also accompanied Gandhi. "He (Gandhi) is scheduled to attend the court hearing and would return to Delhi later in the day. He is likely to come to Uttar Pradesh again to visit his constituency Raebareli over the next few days," Rai told PTI before the hearing. Security was beefed up along the route of his travel and in and around the court premises. The defamation complaint was filed by one Uday Shankar Srivastava, a retired director of the Border Roads Organisation (equivalent to the rank of colonel in the Army). The complaint alleged that on December 16, 2022, Gandhi, while addressing various media personnel and the public during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, mentioned the clash between the Indian Army and the Chinese Army on the border of Arunachal Pradesh on December 9 (2022) and said that "people will ask what all about Bharat Jodo Yatra, but will not ask even once about the beating of our soldiers by Chinese soldiers". The complainant alleged his sentiments were hurt by Gandhi's statement about the alleged beating of Indian soldiers by the Chinese soldiers. On February 11, the special court ordered Gandhi to be summoned on charges of defamation.

Opposition senses ‘opportunity' in electoral roll revision, frequently rakes up issue

Cashing in on the 'opportunity', leader of opposition in the state assembly, , along with INDIA bloc allies, is raking up the concerns of voters almost daily. So far, he has held around six press conferences over the issue, indicating the significance of the issue, while the NDA has held none. The opposition is finding it a major opportunity to reach out to a large number of voter, cashing in on the anger gripping them. "First, your name will be deleted from the voter list, and in due course, you will lose benefits from all welfare schemes that you might be getting now, one by one," Tejashwi has repeatedly warned at press conferences. Explaining how the deletion of names of the voter proves disastrous for the poor, RJD spokesperson Chitranjan Gagan said on Tuesday: "Deletion of names from the voter list means losing every govt facility." He said the biggest loss the people could face is not getting 5 kg free ration. Of the total population of 10.41 crore, as per the 2011 census, the total number of beneficiaries under the Centre-sponsored Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana in Bihar is around 8.71 crore, which comes to 84% of the total population. They will also not be getting houses under PM Awas Yojana, pension and other such facilities. Social scientist B N Prasad said the EC has launched such a big campaign, but the methodology remains unclear. Also, the voices coming from the grassroots do not appear fair or accurate," Prasad, who works with the AN Sinha Institute of Social Studies, told the TOI. "This is a theatre of the absurd," said former principal of Patna College, N K Chaudhary, while reacting to the opposition's hullabaloo over the SIR issue. "But EC should have given more time and increased the number of documents required to be submitted with the filled-up enumeration forms," he said. The opposition has found a potent issue—much like in the 2015 Bihar polls, when NDA's lead crumbled after RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat called for a review of the reservation policy. RJD chief Lalu Prasad turned it into an 'opportunity', warning voters that the RSS-BJP aimed to dismantle the quota system.

Congress draws parallels between the NRC, and the SIR in Bihar
Taking on the Election Commission of India (ECI) over reports that lakhs of illegal persons from Bangladesh, Nepal, and Myanmar had been traced in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, the Congress on Tuesday (July 15, 2025) asked if the poll panel would declare the previous elections 'null and void'. 'If this is true, then the elections in which the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) has won, they did it with the votes of people from Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Nepal. Those elections should be declared null and void,' Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar said during a press conference at the party headquarters. The ECI should not start an exercise like the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the name of revision of electoral rolls, Mr. Kumar said. The SIR should not be about verifying citizenship, which is the purview of the Ministry of Home Affairs, he added. The SIR of the electoral rolls in Bihar showed the poll panel had admitted to what the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, and the Congress party, had been saying — that there was a problem with the electoral rolls, Mr. Kumar said. 'If Rahul Gandhi is right, then the ECI should give the Congress the data it has been asking for. First, they should accept this, and then adopt the right method to rectify it,' he said. 'If they have to revise, it should be done with transparency and given proper time. What would be done in three months? It should be given 13 months or [carried out] over three years... They should revise electoral rolls and not ask for proof of citizenship. That is the job of the Union Home Ministry,' Mr. Kumar said. The Congress leader also expressed grave concern over 'the deteriorating law and order situation in Bihar', alleging that criminals had no fear of the law and were roaming around freely in the State. The education system in Bihar had collapsed under the Janata Dal-United (JD-U)-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regime, he alleged. 'I want to tell the youth that if those in power are not bothered about your future, and are only worried about their chairs (a reference to positions of power), then they should be removed from their chairs,' Mr. Kumar said.
