Opposition senses ‘opportunity' in electoral roll revision, frequently rakes up issue
, the opposition Grand Alliance (GA) missed forming the govt by a whisker. Five years later, the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls being conducted by the Election Commission ahead of the polls in the state has come as a blessing in disguise for GA, feel poll analysts.

GA is armed with a prominent issue that is supposedly causing confusion among electors, they said.
Cashing in on the 'opportunity', leader of opposition in the state assembly,
, along with INDIA bloc allies, is raking up the concerns of voters almost daily. So far, he has held around six press conferences over the issue, indicating the significance of the issue, while the NDA has held none. The opposition is finding it a major opportunity to reach out to a large number of voter, cashing in on the anger gripping them.
"First, your name will be deleted from the voter list, and in due course, you will lose benefits from all welfare schemes that you might be getting now, one by one," Tejashwi has repeatedly warned at press conferences.
Explaining how the deletion of names of the voter proves disastrous for the poor, RJD spokesperson Chitranjan Gagan said on Tuesday: "Deletion of names from the voter list means losing every govt facility."
He said the biggest loss the people could face is not getting 5 kg free ration. Of the total population of 10.41 crore, as per the 2011 census, the total number of beneficiaries under the Centre-sponsored Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana in Bihar is around 8.71 crore, which comes to 84% of the total population. They will also not be getting houses under PM Awas Yojana, pension and other such facilities.
Social scientist B N Prasad said the EC has launched such a big campaign, but the methodology remains unclear.

"It is not clear if the BLOs are visiting door to door to deliver/collect enumeration forms. No BLO has visited my home so far. Also, the voices coming from the grassroots do not appear fair or accurate," Prasad, who works with the AN Sinha Institute of Social Studies, told the TOI.
"This is a theatre of the absurd," said former principal of Patna College, N K Chaudhary, while reacting to the opposition's hullabaloo over the SIR issue.
"But EC should have given more time and increased the number of documents required to be submitted with the filled-up enumeration forms," he said.
The opposition has found a potent issue—much like in the 2015 Bihar polls, when NDA's lead crumbled after RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat called for a review of the reservation policy. RJD chief Lalu Prasad turned it into an 'opportunity', warning voters that the RSS-BJP aimed to dismantle the quota system.

Mamata leads protest march in Kolkata, warns BJP of ‘dire political backlash' if it doesn't stop 'harassing' Bengali-speaking people
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lashed out at the BJP-led Centre on Wednesday (July 16, 2025) for what, she called, its policy of harassing and mistreating Bengali-speaking people across the country and warned the saffron party of dire political consequences if it did not put an immediate stop to such actions. Ms. Banerjee also alleged that the ruling dispensation at the Centre was 'influencing the Election Commission of India' to achieve its political ambitions across states. She was speaking at a public meeting after holding a protest march in rain-drenched Kolkata against the alleged torture of Bengali-speaking people in BJP-ruled States. 'I will challenge the central government notices which were surreptitiously sent to BJP-ruled states to harass Bengali-speaking people and detain them at the slightest suspicion,' the Trinamool Congress supremo alleged at the rally, which terminated at the Dorina Crossing in central Kolkata. 'I am ashamed and disheartened at the Centre and the BJP's attitude towards Bengalis,' Banerjee claimed. Expressing her resolve to fight the BJP 'inch by inch' if it tried to "persecute" Bengali-speaking people, she said that the saffron camp should remain prepared for a fresh round of 'Khela Hobey' (the game-is-on slogan coined ahead of the 2021 state polls) during the assembly elections in 2026. 'I have decided to speak more in Bangla from now on, hold me in detention camps if you can,' she said while attacking the BJP. 'What right does the BJP have in harassing Bengalis like this, even arresting them and forcefully pushing them back to Bangladesh? Is West Bengal not part of India?' she asked. Stating that "extreme situations call for extreme counter measures", Banerjee said, "I will say this in the simplest of words. We will not fight you physically. But if the BJP doesn't put an end to its persecution policies immediately, then the Trinamool Congress knows how to make them stop."

Delhi govt launches overhaul of public transport network, ET Infra
Route rationalisation and smart travel card Advt Infrastructure upgrades and integration with Centre Advt By , ETInfra The Delhi government has begun a large-scale overhaul of its public transport system, with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta reviewing key reforms aimed at modernising the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), upgrading bus infrastructure and improving route to PTI, at a meeting with senior officials of the Transport Department, the chief minister said the administration is working towards building a sustainable and inclusive transport by the expertise of IIT Delhi, the government is rationalising bus routes across the city to improve connectivity in underserved areas and integrate them with the Delhi Metro and the upcoming Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS). A pilot restructuring plan is set to begin in Yamuna chief minister also reviewed plans for a unified smart travel card that would allow travel across DTC buses, the Metro and RRTS. A 'Pink Card' scheme is also being introduced to allow free travel for women and transgender commuters on DTC buses. Discussions with banks are ongoing for the existing fleet of 4,800 electric buses—comprising 660 small and 1,800 large e-buses—alongside 1,800 CNG buses, many continue to operate on outdated routes. Rationalising these routes is part of the broader effort to improve last-mile Delhi's 4,627 bus queue shelters (BQS), only 2,021 are currently operational. The government is upgrading the shelters with new designs under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, adding solar panels, digital boards, LED lighting and real-time arrival bus terminals (ISBTs) including Kashmere Gate, Anand Vihar and Sarai Kale Khan are also being redeveloped. Plans include upgraded amenities and improved infrastructure to enhance commuter access and chief minister noted that the transport overhaul is being conducted in coordination with the central government and supported by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 'We are determined to give Delhi citizens a travel experience that is safe, smart and sustainable,' she Minister Pankaj Singh said DTC is being restructured to become a revenue-surplus and efficient organisation. All future bus stop construction will follow the new rationalisation model. Upgrades to depots and terminals are also underway to support the electric fleet and improve working conditions for DEVI mini electric bus service, currently operating in densely populated areas, has received a strong public response and is contributing to last-mile connectivity, he added.
