Joel Klatt sees Michigan football surging in 2025 with strong defense, favorable schedule

USA Today6 days ago
Most pundits are entering 2025 with Michigan football ranked in their top 25, yet, not many have faith in the Wolverines. With an initial over-under set at 8.5, it's been beyond tempting for many to take the under.
But not Joel Klatt.
The preeminent Fox Sports college football color commentator broke down the maize and blue and his expectations on his podcast on Monday, and he shared his enthusiasm for the defense, the chances of offensive improvement, and the schedule as reasons for why the Wolverines will look much better than last season's output.
"Michigan went 8-5 a year ago, several close games coming off that national championship the year before," Klatt said. "Of the teams not in the playoff, Michigan had the best -- easily -- last month of the season of anybody in the country. They were unbelievable on defense. They get wins against Ohio State and against Alabama, despite scoring only 32 total points in those games. Their defense was No. 1 in the country in scoring defense and total defense in the last four. And those last four, by the way? Not a cupcake schedule. They played three teams that were the top 15 -- Indiana, Ohio State, and Alabama. They gave up two total touchdowns over the last three and a half games.
"If they get any offensive contribution from Bryce Underwood or whoever plays quarterback, this team should be drastically better. This was an eight-win team with an offense that couldn't throw the ball at all.
"And then you actually have the schedule and the Big Ten. They actually have a decent schedule. They don't have to play Penn State, they don't have to play Oregon, they don't have to play Illinois, they don't have to play Indiana, and they don't have to play Iowa. So, what do they have? A huge game in Week 2 against Oklahoma that's on the road. If -- and I know that's a big if, because Norman's not an easy place to play -- if they were to beat Oklahoma, nothing looks daunting on the schedule. They have games at Nebraska, at USC, Washington before the huge game against Ohio State at the end of the year.
"I think this is a bounceback year for Michigan. I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that they go and win that game in Norman. I really don't. Look out for Michigan. I think that's a bounceback. I think that's a buy for next year -- Michigan is a buy."
The big thing for Michigan will be can it take the show on the road? At no point in 2025 will the Wolverines have two home games in a row, alternating between home and away throughout the season, minus the two straight road games at Northwestern and at Maryland before hosting Ohio State.
So, it's simple: if Michigan can play well on the road, as it had from 2021-23, then it will be good. If not? Then it could be another long season.

Slumping Tigers, Rising Challenges -- Meeting Adversity Head On

Manager A.J. Hinch #14 of the Detroit Tigers Slump! One of the words that bedevils teams at every level, but particularly in professional baseball, is in part because the season is so long. Players experience them individually. Teams go through them collectively. There's an old saying that says baseball is like life, only more so. And that's why watching how teams cohere, compete to win, and continue to persevere through the highs and the lows of the season makes it so instructive. And often it's when times are most challenging that the best lessons emerge. Slump in D-town Take the Detroit Tigers. After a surprising finish last season, which saw them make it to the Division playoffs, the Tigers maintained their pace, posting the best record in Major League Baseball until just before and after All-Star Game when they went won one game in 13 tries. What can be done? Evan Petzold, beat writer for the Detroit Free Press, did an extended interview with manager A.J. Hinch. His answers will reflect his long career in the game, as a World Series-winning manager with the Houston Astros, a catcher, and, yes, a psychology major at Stanford. Face reality Facing reality does not mean accepting it. 'You can write a laundry list of things when teams aren't going well about what's going wrong.' Knowing what's wrong does not mean you can fix it right away. "It's hard enough to press the reset button after a good time, where you win a series… The morale is good, but it's tough on these guys.' Competition is not going to make recovery from a slump easy. 'Baseball is going to push back a little bit and make you play the next day and the next day and the next day.' No teams 'we play [are] going to feel sorry for us. We've got to play better." Hinch likes what he sees in his players. "We're not pouting and sulking… There's a ton of togetherness. There's a ton of guys trying to find solutions." He adds something that every manager in any endeavor says: that it's not effort, it's "execution." And that is hard. Lessons to learn All of us face slumps, times when no matter how hard we try, we cannot seem to make a difference. And so, when that happens, it is essential, as Hinch reveals, to take stock of who you are, what you can do, and what you need to do to improve and make changes when possible. Above all, you need to believe in yourself. Losing confidence erodes your ability to bounce back. Hinch himself is no stranger to adversity. After winning the World Series with the Astros, he was suspended for one year for not doing enough to prevent his players from using video technology to steal signs from opposing teams. While he disapproved of what his players were doing, he accepted the consequences. 'Because wrong is wrong, and it was very wrong, and I'll make sure that everyone knows that I feel responsible. Because I was the manager and it was on my watch, and I'll never forget it.' That mindset no doubt gives Hinch a perspective on resilience that is essential for leading through tough times. As a fan, I hold out hope that the Tigers will regain their poise and continue on their winning ways. As a student of leadership, I am sure that the lessons managers like A.J. Hinch share will be valuable to anyone in management. After all, Hinch believes in his players. 'We're trying to keep our chins up, keep our chest out and realize we're still a first-place team. We're one good win away from potentially taking off again."

Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck praises former Nebraska wide receiver Malachi Coleman

A former Nebraska wide receiver is receiving high praise from his new head coach. Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck discussed the impact of Malachi Coleman on the Golden Gophers' offense while meeting with the press at Big Ten media days. Coleman transferred to Minnesota after spending two seasons at Nebraska. In 2023, he appeared in 11 games and had eight catches for 139 yards and one touchdown. He has three seasons of eligibility remaining after he redshirted in 2024. The Lincoln native was the No. 11 overall wide receiver in the 2023 class and the top player in his class from the state of Nebraska, according to the 247Sports Rankings. He committed to the Cornhuskers on December 21, 2022. Fleck opened his comments by mentioning Coleman's athleticism as reported by Clint Cosgrove of ProPath Management. 'You talk about a dynamic playmaker that can do things in the air that I haven't seen many people do at the wide receiver position throughout my entire coaching career. You talk about playing for the Niners, coaching for the Buccaneers, coaching all the receivers we have. He's got very rare attributes." Fleck has had success against the Huskers since becoming the head coach of the Golden Gophers, boasting a 6-1 record against the Cornhuskers, including a five-game winning streak in the series. Minnesota will host Nebraska on Friday, October 17. The kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. CT. Former Wisconsin basketball star Nigel Hayes-Davis officially joins Phoenix Suns

Former Wisconsin basketball star Nigel Hayes-Davis officially joined the Phoenix Suns on Friday. Roughly one month removed from the former Badger reportedly agreeing to a one-year deal with the franchise, Hayes-Davis' journey back to the NBA is now official. For the first time since the 2017-18 regular season, the Ohio native will lace up during an NBA regular season this fall. Hayes-Davis' return to the United States' most coveted professional basketball league follows his hectic spring and summer run as a member of Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul in Turkey. To conclude the 2024-25 EuroLeague campaign, Hayes-Davis helped guide Fenerbahce to an 81-70 victory over Monaco in the final with a 23-point, nine-rebound performance. The output netted him EuroLeague Final Four MVP honors and the club's first title since 2017. After the historic run, Boston Celtics' head coach Joe Mazulla traveled to Istanbul for the Bachesehir - Fenerbahçe game in early June, reigniting Hayes-Davis' reality of playing in the NBA once more. The previous summer, Hayes-Davis earned a Turkish League Championship and MVP honor in Turkey's Basketbol Süper Ligi Finals, where he averaged over 17 points per game to snag finals MVP honors. That pair of runs served as enough evidence for an NBA squad to take a chance on the decorated college and European basketball star. The 6-foot-8 forward suited up in nine games for the Kings, Lakers and Raptors during the 2017-18 slate. He will now return to the hardwood alongside players such as Devin Booker, Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks and Mark Williams. As a Badger from 2013-17, Hayes-Davis was named Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year (2014), a two-time third-team All-Big Ten (2015, 2017) honoree and an All-Big Ten first team selection (2016). He averaged 12.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists across 150 appearances.
