Navy staffer arrested for allegedly leaking Operation Sindoor details to Pakistan
Vishal Yadav, an upper division clerk in the Directorate of Dockyard, is from Rewari in Haryana. He was arrested in Rajasthan's Jaipur on Wednesday.
Yadav had allegedly shared information about Operation Sindoor with the handler.
The matter will be jointly investigated by several security agencies.
Vishnu Kant Gupta, Jaipur's inspector general of police (Crime Investigation Department-Security) said that Yadav had allegedly leaked the classified details to a female Pakistani handler who was posing as an Indian woman, PTI reported.
'Yadav confessed to receiving approximately Rs 2 lakh in total for the information he passed on,' Gupta was quoted as saying. 'This included Rs 50,000 for leaking information related to Operation Sindoor.'
Some of the payments were through cryptocurrency, said the police officer.
Yadav was approached by the Pakistani operative through the social media platform Facebook, PTI quoted unidentified intelligence officials as saying. The handler had sent a friend request using a fake profile with the name Priya Sharma.
The two communicated regularly on WhatsApp and later Telegram, which offers end-to-end encryption.
End-to-end encryption refers to a method of secure communication in which only the sender of the message and the receiver can access the content. No one in between, including the service provider, has access to the communication.
Yadav initially received payments of Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,000 for lower-grade information, the police were quoted as saying. He was subsequently encouraged to provide more valuable intelligence in exchange for higher payments.
The forensic examination of his mobile phone uncovered extensive evidence, including financial transactions, sensitive messages and confidential data that he had sent to the Pakistani handler, PTI quoted the police as saying.
Since May, several persons, including two YouTubers, have been arrested on allegations of spying for Pakistan.
The Rajasthan Police had also on June 3 said that a state government employee was arrested for allegedly spying for Pakistan. The person, Shakur Khan, had been in regular contact with persons associated with the Pakistani High Commission, the police said.
The arrests came amid heightened military tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad that escalated on May 7 when the Indian military carried out strikes – codenamed Operation Sindoor – on what it claimed were terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
The strikes were in response to the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, which killed 26 persons on April 22.
On May 30, the National Investigation Agency conducted raids at 15 locations in eight states that were suspected to be linked to alleged Pakistani intelligence operatives.

iStock With the fall semester about to begin in under two weeks, American universities are bracing for a steep drop in Indian student arrivals. Education consultants in Hyderabad estimate up to a 70% decline, citing a freeze in US visa appointment slots and a spike in rejection rates as the key reasons. 'By this time usually, most students are done with their visa interviews and are preparing to fly. This year, we're still refreshing the portal every day hoping for a slot to open. It's the worst in years,' Sanjeev Rai of Hyderabad Overseas Consultant, told TOI's Amisha Rajani. While the US State Department earlier indicated that student visa appointments would be released in phases, consultants say the process remains inconsistent and lacks transparency. With many students unable to secure interview slots or receive confirmation after booking, withdrawals are rising and alternative destinations like Germany are gaining attention. 'Even when a few slots opened midweek, those who managed to book haven't received confirmation.' He suggested the US authorities might be testing their systems, adding, 'There's no logical reason to open a handful of slots without confirming bookings,' Ankit Jain from Window Overseas Education Consultancy noted. Several consultancies report a sharp increase in panic calls from students and parents alike. 'If slots aren't released in the next few days, thousands of dreams will be shattered. We are seeing about an 80% drop. We're getting panic calls every day,' said Arvind Manduva of I20 Fever. Adding to the uncertainty is a high rate of rejections under Section 214B of the US Immigration and Nationality Act. This clause is typically used when applicants are unable to demonstrate strong ties to India and prove their intent to return after studies. 'Many students who usually would have had smooth approvals are being turned away. Their social media was also clean. The only reason that everyone seems to be receiving is 214B,' said Jain. India sent over 3.3 lakh students to the US last year, surpassing China for the first time. But this year, even those who began visa processes early are being turned down. 'Many students who have been preparing for months are seeing their dream crash. However, what the US authorities are doing is not new. The rules, vetting, and scrutiny were in place for years; it is just effectively implemented now. This will filter out applicants,' said Ravi Lothumalla from US Admission, an immigration consulting firm based in Dallas. Meanwhile, the US Consulate General in Hyderabad confirmed that visa slots have resumed. 'We're working to fully vet visa applicants to ensure they do not intend to harm America or our interests, and that they credibly establish their eligibility for the visa sought, including that they intend to engage in activities consistent with the terms of their admission. We encourage applicants to apply as early as they can and to anticipate additional processing time for these visa categories,' said a spokesperson from the US Consulate General in Hyderabad. Monuments stand in silence
It was another Sunday – May 10, 1857 – at the Delhi Telegraph office, nestled beside the British Magazine. The sun was just starting to heat the streets, and as per the custom, the office was to close by 9am. However, this Sunday was not like any other. The needle of time had shifted. Major Charles Todd, the British commander on site, stood by the telegraph machine, waiting for news to flash in from Meerut. Two Eurasian signallers, William Brendish and John Pilkington, bent down to read — the transmission was short and ominous. Meerut, 70 kilometers away, was distraught. Earlier in the day, sepoys (Indian troops in the British army) had rebelled, refusing to salute a foreign crown. Following this, the British officers issued a warning that any soldier backing the rebellion would be disarmed and chained. In Delhi, the message reachednot via horse or any other mode, but via a pulse in copper wires and tapping keys. By nightfall, when the connection with Meerut conked out, Todd sent his aides to survey the damage. When they did not return, he went himself and never returned. Hours later, an urgent message was tapped out to the Telegraph Office in Ambala: 'We must leave office. All the bungalows are on fire, burned down by the sepoys of Meerut. They came in this morning. We are off. Mr. Todd is dead, I think. He went out this morning and has not returned yet. We heard that nine Europeans were killed.' This was perhaps the last message wired from the telegraph office and possibly the first about freedom from oppressive British rule. The 1857 rebellion had lit the fire of mutiny awakening the people to the path of independence. Barely a 100 metres away opposite to the Telegraph office, the Mutiny Memorial was built in 1863 to honor soldiers of the British Indian Army who died during the revolt. In 1972, on the 25th anniversary of Indian independence, the Indian government renamed the Mutiny Memorial as 'Ajitgarh', the place of unvanquished. A plaque in memory of the officers and soldiers of the Delhi Field Force, whom the British considered rebels, was also installed. Today, the Telegraph Memorial stands not in silence, but in silent remembrance of the place as an enduring symbol of courage and where once wires shook with urgency for a nation's awakening. In that final message, the British heard the end of their rule and heard the start of the Indian voice. Not every revolution rages, some start as a whisper through copper, bearing the burden of a people poised to rise.

On Thursday, Vadra's office said that the present proceedings were 'nothing more than an extension of the political witch hunt by the present government.' 'Vadra is aware of reports suggesting that the Directorate of Enforcement has filed a Prosecution Complaint naming him as an accused before the Rouse Avenue Courts, Delhi. As the Court is yet to even take cognizance of the matter, he has not had the opportunity to examine the Prosecution Complaint. As a law-abiding Indian citizen, he has always and will continue to extend his fullest cooperation to the authorities and he is confident that at the end of it all, the truth will prevail and he will be cleared of any wrongdoing. He is looking forward to the opportunity to defend himself and clear his name in Court,' it stated. The ED investigation was based on an FIR, registered on September 1, 2018 by Gurgaon police, alleging fraudulent purchase of 3.53 acres of land situated in village Shikohpur, Sector 83, Gurgaon by Vadra through his entity M/s Sky Light Hospitality Pvt Ltd from M/s Onkareshwar Properties Pvt Ltd on February 12, 2008.
