Mohan Majhi govt. to upgrade Puri into municipal corporation

The Hindu7 hours ago
The Bharatiya Janata Party government in Odisha on Friday (July 4, 2025) announced that Puri Municipality will be upgraded to a municipal corporation by merging several adjoining villages with the holy town.
The announcement comes in the wake of a tragic stampede near the chariots during the ongoing Rath Yatra festival, which claimed three lives.
Chief Minister Mohan Majhi said the decision was taken keeping in mind the town's growing population and the increasing influx of devotees over the years. 'The government has decided to upgrade Puri to a municipal corporation. The new corporation will include Puri town and seven to eight panchayats from the adjoining Brahmagiri block. Residents of these areas will be able to access urban-level services,' he said. The process for upgrading the municipality to corporation will begin from Saturday (July 5, 2025).
Mr. Majhi reiterated the government's commitment to transform Puri into a leading religious and tourist destination by 2036. 'To achieve this vision, we must invest in both new infrastructure and the upkeep of existing facilities. A prosperous Odisha is not possible without making Puri a prosperous, beautiful, green, and well-developed city,' he added.
In addition, the state government has announced plans to establish a world-class Shree Jagannath Museum, Library, and Research Centre. The institution will focus on preserving the historical, cultural, and religious heritage surrounding the Shree Jagannath Temple and its associated rituals.

Iskcon Rath Yatra allowed in Anantapur with riders

VIJAYAWADA: The AP High Court on Friday made it clear that Iskcon Rath Yatra in Anantapur district, scheduled for July 5, can be held subject to restrictions imposed by police to ensure law and order. Since Muharram also falls on the same day, the court directed Iskcon representatives to strictly adhere to the conditions laid down by police to avoid any disruption to public peace. The division bench comprising Chief Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur and Justice Cheemalapati Ravi, issued orders noting that the matter pertains to sensitive law and order issue. Earlier, a single-judge bench had allowed Iskcon to conduct the Rath Yatra, but the police challenged that order through an appeal, citing concern over potential law and order problem as Muharram procession and Rath Yatra take place on the same route. The police informed the court that preparations for the Muharram procession would begin around 2.30 pm, and suggested that Rath Yatra be conducted between 10 am and 1 pm. However, Iskcon representatives stated that they planned to start Rath Yatra at 1 pm and cross the Old City by 2 pm. Taking note of the sensitive nature of the situation, the High Court said both events should take place under strict adherence to the conditions set by the police to ensure law and order.

BJD demands judicial probe into Rath Yatra ‘mess', stampede deaths

BHUBANESWAR: The BJD on Friday demanded a judicial probe, monitored by a sitting judge of the Orissa High Court, into the mismanagement of Rath Yatra which led to the stampede near Gundicha temple and death of three devotees on June 29. In a memorandum submitted to Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, a delegation of senior party leaders said the administrative inquiry ordered by development commissioner Anu Garg was grossly inadequate and not commensurate with the seriousness of the tragedy. They alleged that the Rath Yatra this year was marked by gross mismanagement in conduct of rituals as a result of which Nandighosha, the chariot of Lord Jagannath, could not be pulled till 7.45 pm. The BJD leaders also demanded constitution of the managing committee of Shree Jagannath temple without further delay. 'The temple has been functioning without the statutory managing committee (MC) for the past eight months, disrupting key administrative and policy decisions. As mandated under the Shree Jagannath Temple Act, 1954, the MC is crucial for approving matters related to rituals, finance and temple management. Its absence has led to the mess and chaos,' they said. They also brought to the Governor's notice the severe traffic and crowd mismanagement during Rath Yatra and alleged that distribution of over 10,000 cordon passes by the ruling BJP to its supporters was the major cause behind the disruption. They urged the Governor to personally intervene and ensure that the remaining rituals of Rath Yatra are conducted smoothly.

Pushkar Singh Dhami: Longest serving BJP CM of Utttarakhand

Pushkar Singh Dhami As Pushkar Singh Dhami completes four years in office this July, he has emerged as the Bharatiya Janata Party 's (BJP) longest-serving Chief Minister in Uttarakhand — a notable achievement in a state known for frequent leadership changes. From being a relatively untested choice in 2021 to gaining national attention with the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Dhami's tenure has been marked by high visibility and legislative activism. When Dhami took charge in July 2021, just months ahead of the state assembly polls, political observers saw the decision as a gamble by the BJP leadership. At the time, no incumbent government had returned to power in Uttarakhand. However, Dhami led the party to an electoral win, and the BJP broke the trend of anti-incumbency. His reappointment as chief minister was seen as an endorsement from the party high command, signalling continuity and trust. Over the past four years, Dhami has positioned himself as a proactive administrator closely aligned with the Centre's agenda. His government introduced and passed several legislations including anti-conversion laws, anti-cheating measures, and most notably, the UCC. One of Dhami's key strengths has been his ability to interpret and act upon policy signals from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The chief minister's swift legislative actions, coupled with an image of modesty and firmness, have been part of what state leaders describe as a governance model built on responsiveness and ground-level engagement. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo His performance during events such as the Silkyara tunnel rescue operation and his involvement in major sporting events have also been highlighted by the BJP as evidence of his crisis management skills and public outreach. During his tenure, Prime Minister Modi has visited Uttarakhand several times. Within party circles, Dhami is now regarded as a reliable leader with full backing from the central leadership. As the BJP prepares for upcoming electoral challenges, Dhami's extended tenure — in contrast to earlier phases of political instability in the state — is being projected as a sign of institutional stability and policy continuity. Party sources suggest that the central leadership remains committed to removing hurdles in governance and ensuring Dhami's momentum continues.
