Nelson, 2 relievers combine for 11-inning 1-hitter in Diamondbacks' 1-0 victory over Pirates
Nelson surrendered a triple by Tommy Pham off the Clemente Wall in right field with two outs in the second — the ball glancing off right fielder Corbin Carroll's glove before hitting the wall and bounding away — during his six innings of work.
Anthony DeSclafani (1-1) followed with four hitless innings of his own. Kevin Ginkel left the tying run on third in the 11th for his third save.
Suarez, who is the subject of active trade speculation with the deadline approaching next week, lofted a fly ball of Braxton Ashcraft (2-1) just deep enough near the line in right in the top of the 11th to score Carroll.
The Pirates wore a throwback uniform combination to honor former outfielder Dave Parker, who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame this weekend. Their performance at the plate didn't exactly bring back visions of 'The Cobra' as baseball's lowest scoring team saw its three-game winning streak end.
Pittsburgh starter Mike Burrows retired the first 10 batters he faced and allowed just three singles over six scoreless innings of work before giving way to the bullpen.
Key momentLourdes Gurriel Jr. made a diving grab on a sinking liner by Pittsburgh's Bryan Reynolds with Liover Pegeuro on third and one out in the 11th.
Key stat
Arizona second baseman Ketel Marte went 0 for 2 with three walks while becoming the third Diamondback to appear in 1,000 games with the franchise, joining Paul Goldschmidt and Luis Gonzalez.
Up next
Arizona's Merrill Kelly (9-5, 3.32 ERA) will look to stay undefeated against Pittsburgh, opposing Andrew Heaney (4-9, 5.03) on Saturday.

Lionel Messi, wife Antonela Roccuzzo 'caught' on Coldplay 'Kiss Cam'
Lionel Messi and his wife get the Coldplay spotlight, not like that other couple. Messi and his wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, were briefly serenaded by Coldplay during a concert in Miami on Sunday, July 27. Messi and his wife attended the show at Hard Rock Stadium, and found themselves in the spotlight – far from that one viral Coldplay moment. "Well, Leo, my beautiful brother. You and your wife are looking so fine," Coldplay frontman Chris Martin sang. "Thanks for coming today, to see our band play. The No. 1 sports person of all time." Messi, who doesn't speak English, appeared to understand Coldplay's tribute. He smiled, waved and clapped in response with his arm around his wife. They attended the concert with their three sons Thiago, Mateo, and Ciro. Messi, the Argentine World Cup champion playing with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, returns to action on Wednesday, July 30, when his team begins the 2025 Leagues Cup tournament against Mexican club Atlas at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Chicago Cubs ‘Desperately' Targeting Specific Position at MLB Trade Deadline
The Chicago Cubs have missed out on playing postseason baseball for the past four years. They're doing everything in their power to make sure that streak doesn't stretch to five seasons. Yet, this year's Cubs team is already on track for a playoff spot, sitting in first place of the National League Central. However, the Philadelphia Phillies are just a half-game behind, meaning the Cubs can't afford to rest on their early success. If anything, they need to capitalize and shore up any weaknesses. According to USA Today's MLB expert Bob Nightengale, the Cubs have been an active team ahead of the July 31 MLB trade deadline. Nightengale describes the Cubs as 'desperately' wanting another starting pitcher before Thursday's deadline passes. 'The Cubs desperately want another starter at the deadline, targeting Mitch Keller of the Pirates, and would include outfield prospect Owen Caissie to make it work.' Bob Nightengale on Chicago Cubs Keller is a one-time All-Star who's still just 29 years old. Plus, he's under contract through 2028, so it's not hard to see how the Cubs would have interest. He's also in the midst of one of his best seasons yet, with a career-low ERA of 3.53 to go with an ERA+ of 120. Though, as Cubs fans know, Caissie is no slouch either. He ranks 36th on top prospects list and is the top-ranked player in the organization. If the Cubs really are willing to give up Caissie, it would send a strong signal to the fanbase that this regime is ready to win and win now.
