
From lab to market: ATRC entities turn breakthrough research into real-world technologies
SARA ALZAABI (ABU DHABI)Fuelling the UAE's push for innovation and a knowledge-based future are local labs and institutions that transform cutting-edge research into homegrown technologies.The Advanced Technology Research Council's (ATRC) key entities - TII, ASPIRE, and SteerAI - are translating advanced science into real-world solutions that serve communities and national priorities, from AI to robotics and automation.
"We are helping the UAE shift from adopting technologies to building them - delivering real economic and strategic value," said Dr. Najwa Aaraj, CEO of TII, in an interview with Aletihad . "Whether it is AI, quantum, robotics, or advanced materials, we are working on scalable, secure systems that support industrial resilience and self-reliance."Radar systems, edge AI tools, and impact-responsive body armour are some of the technologies that are moving "steadily from lab to market", supported by TII's commercialisation partner VentureOne, Dr. Aaraj said.Collaborative ProjectsTII has been working with major government entities to advance next-generation technologies across sectors, from aerial systems and quantum-secure space communications to AI-enabled healthcare."Our robotics centre worked with the GCAA on autonomous aerial corridors. In quantum, we are partnering with the UAE Space Agency on secure communications for space infrastructure," Dr. Aaraj said."In AI, we enable edge-based models for healthcare and government, while in autonomous robotics, we are advancing GPS-free navigation for logistics and inspections."TII also invests in local talent. "Programmes like NexTech embed top Emirati STEM students in international universities and bring them back to our research centres to build the next generation of UAE scientists," she said.Tech with Real-World ImpactATRC's ASPIRE also seeks to "bridge the gap between breakthrough research and tangible, real-world impact", turning lab ideas into deployable tech across key sectors.
Speaking to Aletihad , Stephane Timpano, CEO of ASPIRE and A2RL, said: "From tackling carbon storage monitoring to shaping air corridors for autonomous mobility, our work ensures that emerging technologies meet real industrial and societal needs." ASPIRE focuses on "dual-use, high-impact technologies", including AI, robotics, and advanced materials."We are proving high-performance systems can be designed and built in the UAE," Timpano said, highlighting projects like A2RL's EAV-24 autonomous racecar.ASPIRE's lab-to-market process starts by identifying real-world challenges in priority sectors, he said."Then, we invite global and local innovators to solve (these challenges) through competitive, milestone-driven programmes. Once a solution proves viable, we help de-risk and scale it."The goal, Timpano added, is to "forge new collaborations and show how the UAE is not just buying innovation but building it"."Everything we do is designed to grow the UAE's intellectual capital," he said.Autonomous SolutionsSteerAI, on the other hand, seeks to drive the UAE's shift from tech importer to innovator through sovereign autonomous mobility solutions.Furthermore, Michael Sonderby, Acting CEO of SteerAI, told Aletihad that the company is helping drive the UAE's shift from tech importer to innovator through sovereign autonomous mobility solutions."SteerAI is a direct product of the UAE's ambition to become a global leader in advanced manufacturing and AI innovation," said Michael Sonderby, Acting CEO of SteerAI.For an instance, its autonomous GPS-free system, CoreX, was developed at the Technology Innovation Institute (TII) and is now being deployed with partners like A2RL and Milrem Robotics."CoreX allows our vehicles to navigate unmapped terrain in real time without relying on GPS or maps," Sonderby said. "It has huge implications for defence, ISR, search and rescue, and more."
SteerAI's CoreX system is designed to keep humans out of danger zones, he said. "It does not tire, get distracted, or miss signals. We detect and avoid obstacles faster than human drivers."
By supporting the country's autonomous tech ecosystem, SteerAI's "goal is to contribute to the UAE's vision of becoming a global tech hub", Sonderby said.

The company revealed it is now the first Internet infrastructure provider to block AI crawlers by default. This move aims to stop AI companies from accessing web content without permission or compensation. Starting immediately, website owners can choose whether AI crawlers can access their content and how it can be used. AI companies must now clearly state if their crawlers are used for training, inference, or search. This transparency helps content creators make informed decisions. Cloudflare reported that this new setting marks a step toward a more sustainable future for both creators and AI innovators. For years, search engines directed users to original websites, generating traffic and ad revenue. That model is now disrupted. AI crawlers collect content like text and images but often provide no referral traffic. This change, Cloudflare warned, risks removing incentives to produce high-quality content. Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare, stated, 'If the Internet is going to survive the age of AI, we need to give publishers control and build a new economic model.' He emphasized that original content powers the Internet and must be protected. Prince added, 'Our goal is to put the power back in the hands of creators, while still helping AI companies innovate.' Several publishing and tech leaders voiced strong support for Cloudflare's move: Roger Lynch, CEO of Condé Nast, called it a 'game-changer' for publishers. New domains must choose whether to allow AI crawlers during setup. This removes the need to manually opt out later. Cloudflare also announced new protocols to help AI bots authenticate themselves. These protocols will make it easier for website owners to identify AI crawlers and control access. MOCCAE bolsters UAE aquaculture with focus on exports, sustainability and food security

Now, locally farmed fish not only cater to domestic demand but are also part of a broader push to boost exports and tap into high-potential global markets, according to an official from the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE). In an interview with Aletihad , Dr. Ebrahim Abdulla Husain Al Jamali, Director of the Fisheries Sustainability Department at the MOCCAE, said the ministry is actively working to expand aquaculture exports to meet rising global demand. 'This strategic push includes expanding access to new global markets, with a particular focus on regions demonstrating strong demand for high-quality, sustainably farmed seafood. The strategy also involves promoting species with proven market acceptance and significant export potential,' he said. In 2022, aquaculture production in the country reached 3,526.5 tonnes, with ongoing efforts to increase this figure through farm expansion and improved goal, he added, is to 'position the UAE as a leading regional exporter of premium aquaculture products, while simultaneously supporting broader economic diversification and sustainable growth objectives'. Boosting National Food Security Within the country, fish is a key part of the National Food Security Strategy 2051. Recent studies on consumer behaviour have found that the UAE's per capita seafood consumption —26.4kg in 2022 — exceeds the global average, underscoring the importance of this sector within the country's food system. The ministry has been leveraging such insights to tailor strategies, as it works towards enhancing aquaculture's contribution to building a stable and resilient national food supply. 'The ministry is actively streamlining aquaculture development by significantly simplifying licensing procedures, eliminating unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles, and prioritising environmental sustainability,' Dr. Al Jamali said.'Complementing these regulatory efforts, comprehensive support programmes are in place to support local farmers.'Technical expertise and advisory services have been been made available to farmers, while investors benefit from dedicated guidance being provided throughout the licensing process, he added. In support of efficient farm operations, MOCCAE has launched an integrated suite of smart digital services that streamline aquaculture-related processes, including licensing and the importation of live fish and broodstock. Among these services is an advanced permitting system for importing live aquatic organisms, ensuring rigorous inspection at entry points to uphold biosecurity system enhances transparency and speed, with permits valid for up to three months and additional services available for exporting and re-exporting aquaculture products. 'These smart services foster a business-friendly environment… encouraging private sector engagement within the aquaculture industry,' Dr. Al Jamali said. Responsible GrowthIn a bid to innovate and expand production, MOCCAE is also investing in research and development with private sector partners, focusing on the commercial viability of new local species, Dr. Al Jamali said. A pivotal collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) led to the creation of the UAE Aquaculture Toolkit, which provides a scientific and operational foundation for modern aquaculture practices. Key components of the toolkit include an 'Atlas of Potential Offshore Aquaculture Zones', a 'Consumer Preferences Study,' and comprehensive biosecurity guidelines for disease prevention at the farm level. Consumer studies conducted as part of the Aquaculture Toolkit have provided valuable insights that guide production, marketing, and policy decisions within the UAE's aquaculture sector, Dr. Al Jamali said.'These consumer insights directly inform policy, guiding the sector to focus production on high-demand species that exhibit excellent taste, texture, and growth performance. They also highlight the need to invest in modern production systems, such as Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) to maintain consistent quality.'With insights gathered through this toolkit, a National Aquaculture Development Plan is in the works, Dr. Al Jamali said. This plan aims 'to expand farms, diversify production, ensure sustainability (environmental, social, economic), improve investment, boost GDP contribution, and create export opportunities', he added. Sustainability remains at the core of the UAE's aquaculture expansion. MOCCAE's efforts are underpinned by Federal Law No. 23 of 1999 on the Exploitation, Protection, and Development of Living Aquatic Resources and Federal Law No. 24 of 1999 on Environment Protection and Development. 'Together, these laws form a comprehensive and strong legal foundation that ensures the responsible growth of the aquaculture sector, effectively balancing industry expansion with the protection and conservation of the natural environment,' Dr. Al Jamali said.
