Shohei Ohtani co-writes children's book starring his dog Decoy
Ohtani posted a photo of Decoy, a Dutch Kooikerhondje, sitting next to the book on his Instagram account on Thursday. The cover of 'Decoy Saves Opening Day' features a drawing of the pup with a ball in his mouth and Ohtani in his baseball jersey.
It tells the story of how Decoy is supposed to throw the first pitch on opening day but realizes he left his lucky baseball at home and scrambles to retrieve it in time.
The book will be released on Feb. 3, according to publisher HarperCollins.
Ohtani co-wrote the book with Michael Blank, and Fanny Liem did the illustrations.
Ohtani told The Associated Press last year that he hoped Decoy's popularity would increase the profile of the Kooikerhondje (pronounced COY-ker-HUND-che) breed.
'The number of the breed has kind of dwindled, so by him gaining a little bit of popularity hopefully that brings up the number of his breed,' Ohtani told the AP through a translator. 'I do feel like we were able to, in a small way, contribute to the popularity of the dog and I'm sure Decoy himself would be happy about that.'
Ohtani had his dog throw out a first pitch and he brought Decoy to the Dodgers' victory parade after the team's World Series win over the New York Yankees last year.

Shohei Ohtani ties Dodgers record with 5th HR in 5 games before Freddie Freeman walks it off
There was a lot of excitement at Dodgers Stadium on Wednesday. First, Shohei Ohtani tied a Dodgers record with his fifth home run in five games. Then Freddie Freeman walked it off with a ninth-inning bases-loaded knock to secure a 4-3 Dodgers win over the Minnesota Twins. Ohtani got the scoring started in the second Dodgers at-bat of the game. With an 0-2 count, Twins starter Chris Paddack didn't attempt to induce a swinging strike 3 with a pitch off the plate. Instead, he left a 79 mph curve ball hanging over the heart of the plate. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] It was an invitation for Ohtani to swing. And swing he did, for a 411-foot blast over the centerfield wall to secure a 1-0 Dodgers lead. Ohtani's fifth home run in five games tied him with six other Dodgers players for the longest such streak in franchise history. He joins Max Muncy, Joc Pederson, Matt Kemp, Adrian Gonzalez, Shawn Green and Roy Campanella in achieving the feat. With a home run on Friday against the Red Sox at Fenway Park, Ohtani would claim the Dodgers record as his own. The home run extended Ohtani's NL-best tally to 37 for the season and left him just two behind MLB home-run leader Cal Raleigh in what's shaping up to be quite the race for the 2025 home run crown. Aaron Judge and Eugenio Suarez sit just behind Ohtani with 36 home runs each. And it was his second home this week that played a significant role in a win after his two-run blast Monday in a game that he started on the mound put the Dodgers ahead in a 5-2 win over the Twins. On Wednesday, Ohtani got some help from fellow All-Star and reigning World Series MVP Freddie Freeman to secure the victory. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, Freeman took the plate with two outs and the Dodgers trailing, 3-2. Twins reliever Griffin Jax fired a 96 mph fastball over the plate on a 1-2 count. Freeman hit a line drive to left field that just snuck under the glove Harrison Bader for a base hit. Mookie Betts scored from third base. And Ohtani, appropriately, came around from second to score the game-winning run for a 4-3 Dodgers victory. Cue the Randy Newman.

Yankees' Luis Gil allows 5 runs in first rehab start at Triple-A level
Associated Press ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — New York Yankees injured right-hander Luis Gil allowed four hits and five runs in 3 1/3 innings in a rehab start with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday. Gil allowed a home run to the first batter he faced, outfielder Robert Hassell III, in his outing against Rochester, the Nationals' top minor league team. Gil walked three and struck out four. He threw 67 pitches, 44 strikes. Gil strained a lat in spring training and has not pitched in the majors this season. The 2024 AL Rookie of the Year was 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA with 171 strikeouts in 151 2/3 innings last season. Gil made two rehab outings at Double-A Somerset, one on July 13 and a second July 18, before moving up to Triple-A. There's a possibility his next start comes in the majors. 'Definitely getting there,' New York manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday before the Yankees' game in Toronto. It's been a good build up for him. We get through this one and see where we're at.' ___ AP MLB: recommended Item 1 of 3
