Ministry grants for 52 Sabah business women

Kota Kinabalu: A total of 52 women entrepreneurs under the Sabah Department of Women's Affairs (Jhewa) received product packaging and labelling grants since the programme was introduced in 2018. Minister of Community Development and People's Wellbeing, Datuk James Ratib, said the achievement reflects the strong entrepreneurial potential among women in the State. 'At the same time, we also celebrate the success of 32 participants who have earned the Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) across various fields. 'Congratulations to all recipients. You are role models for an independent and competitive generation of women,' he said when officiating the 2025 Jhewa Product Packaging Grant and SKM Certificate Presentation Ceremony. James said the State Government, through agencies including Jhewa, will continue efforts to build capacity, provide ongoing training and offer targeted support to ensure entrepreneurs not only sustain their ventures but also expand into broader markets, including international ones. However, he said long-term success depends on the entrepreneur's own commitment, discipline and determination to keep learning, innovating, and adapting to market needs. He added that the support given is not limited to physical assistance such as packaging or certification, but also serves as a boost of confidence and moral encouragement – a sign that the government stands firmly behind women entrepreneurs. Jhewa Director Haslina Ismail said the department remains committed to empowering women and targeted groups through capacity-building and skills development programmes. She said investing in human capital, particularly among women, single mothers and the B40 group, will generate sustainable economic benefits for the state. Landowner reluctance slows road project, says Rina

TAWAU: The reluctance of private landowners involved in the Jalan Utara development project to relinquish their land for development purposes has been identified as a key obstacle in expediting the completion of the project. Kukusan Assemblywoman Datuk Rina Jainal, said she was informed that some parties refused to release their land even though it was the government's responsibility to develop the area. 'However, this is currently being reviewed to speed up the development of Jalan Utara, which indeed has a significant impact on the residents of the Kukusan area,' she told the media on Thursday. According to her, the matter was raised during her meeting with Sabah Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Ir Shahelmy Yahya, and Kalabakan Member of Parliament, Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandi, at his office recently to discuss the development of Jalan Utara, which is crucial for the Kukusan area. During the meeting, she also raised concerns regarding heavy vehicle transportation along Jalan Kalabakan, particularly involving the palm oil industry. Rina noted that while there is no immediate need for a dedicated route, industry players should act more responsibly in their use of other public roads. In the meantime, Rina urged civil servants and all relevant parties to act with integrity and professionalism to ensure that government development initiatives are not hindered by internal weaknesses. 'The public is watching our work…therefore, I hope all parties will uphold integrity and competitiveness in delivering the best services,' she added. PENAMPANG: The annual Kaamatan-Gawai celebration again brought indigenous Sabah and Sarawak businessmen closer in terms of collaboration, cultural exchange and a shared vision for economic progress. Since its inception in 2007, the Kaamatan-Gawai celebration had symbolised unity between the two states, honouring East Malaysia's rich indigenous heritage. KCCI, established in 1996, and DCCI, founded in 2003, first forged ties during the Bumiputera Economic Congress in Kuala Lumpur. That connection laid the foundation for economic cooperation that continues to grow today. In fact, when DCCI was formalising its constitution in 2002, it modelled its structure after KCCI's, a gesture of shared purpose and mutual respect. Sabah emerge winner in Golf Friendship Challenge trophy

Kota Kinabalu: The Kadazandusun Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) emerged victorious, edging out their rivals narrowly on points in this year's Friendship Golf Tournament held at Sutera Harbour Golf Resort for the Datuk Dr Joachim Gunsalam Challenge Trophy. The trophy was last held by the Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI), who won it in Sarawak. The friendly golf match, a key highlight of the recent Kaamatan-Gawai celebration in Kota Kinabalu, brought together members of both KCCI and DCCI, reinforcing ties between the two Bornean states through sport and fellowship. According to KCCI President Datuk Ladislaus Maluda, this year's tournament saw one of the largest turnouts, with 130 golfers with 62 participants from each chamber. Highlights included special musical performances by bands from Kalimantan and Sarawak, which received enthusiastic applause for their lively showmanship.
