TAWAU: The reluctance of private landowners involved in the Jalan Utara development project to relinquish their land for development purposes has been identified as a key obstacle in expediting the completion of the project. Kukusan Assemblywoman Datuk Rina Jainal, said she was informed that some parties refused to release their land even though it was the government's responsibility to develop the area. 'However, this is currently being reviewed to speed up the development of Jalan Utara, which indeed has a significant impact on the residents of the Kukusan area,' she told the media on Thursday. According to her, the matter was raised during her meeting with Sabah Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Ir Shahelmy Yahya, and Kalabakan Member of Parliament, Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandi, at his office recently to discuss the development of Jalan Utara, which is crucial for the Kukusan area. During the meeting, she also raised concerns regarding heavy vehicle transportation along Jalan Kalabakan, particularly involving the palm oil industry. Rina noted that while there is no immediate need for a dedicated route, industry players should act more responsibly in their use of other public roads. In the meantime, Rina urged civil servants and all relevant parties to act with integrity and professionalism to ensure that government development initiatives are not hindered by internal weaknesses. 'The public is watching our work…therefore, I hope all parties will uphold integrity and competitiveness in delivering the best services,' she added. Yayasan Sabah extends 30 pc Madani Loan Rebate to September

The initiative, launched on 1 April, allows borrowers who fully settle their education loans to enjoy the rebate on their outstanding balance. As of 20 June, 96 borrowers have benefited, with RM232,817 in rebates issued and RM651,680 collected in lump-sum repayments. 'This programme eases borrowers' financial burden while supporting the sustainability of our education fund,' said Director Dato' Sri Haji Gulamhaidar Khan Bahadar, urging eligible borrowers to act. To encourage participation, Yayasan Sabah is also offering lucky draw prizes, including a luxury stay at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge. In addition, enhancements to the Education Loan Repayment Portal will roll out in August, allowing users to manage deferments, rescheduling, salary deductions, and more. DBKK urged to tackle illegal STRA, review high hotel licensing fees

KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysia Budget & Business Hotel Association (MyBHA) has called on Dewan Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu (DBKK) to act urgently against illegal short-term residential accommodation (STRA) operators and review what it deems excessive hotel licensing fees. MyBHA President Dr Sri Ganesh said it is unacceptable that licensed hotel operators are burdened with high fees and strict compliance while unlicensed STRA units operate freely without regulation or accountability. 'This creates an unfair and unsafe tourism environment, not only for businesses but for the tourists themselves,' he said. The association proposed a tiered licensing system, lower fees for budget hotels, a tourist tax alternative, and better enforcement against illegal STRA. It also called for more transparency in how licensing revenue is used and urged DBKK to work with industry players to create fair, sustainable tourism policies. Sabah Publishing House leads 2025 Kinabalu Press Awards

The event at Magellan Sutera on Sunday evening reaffirmed the group's leading role in quality journalism across languages and platforms. Sherell Ann Jeffrey of Daily Express, continued her winning streak by bagging the top Feature Journalism Award (English) for the sixth consecutive year. Her series on "Dealing With Sexual Harassment" leaves a lasting mark in empowering Sabah's women. She also earned a Merit Prize in the Environmental Reporting category for highlighting conservation concerns over the Maliau Basin alongside senior writer Kan Yaw Chong. The duo also took home another merit for the Sikh temple's land dispute in Tanjung Aru that was built in 1924. Court correspondent Joan George Mool was also honoured with a merit in the News Reporting category for her piece on "Steps Taken After the Sulu Fiasco". Ricardo Unto secured a merit in Sports with his article on Sabah's e-sports potential. Special writer, Kan, emerged as business winner for his series on industrial tree planting. He is known as a consistent economic journalism contributor with a humanist style. Overseas Chinese Daily News' Bong Tze Pin earned two category wins in Business Reporting for his feature on SMJ Energy and another in Environmental Journalism on coral reef bleaching. He also received a merit in the Arts and Culture category, with a piece on traditional practice of sogit in conflict resolution. Reporter Gravin Wong Chian Kyun walked away with two merits. One was for a feature on early autism intervention and another in the Sports category for challenging stereotypes in fitness competitions. Harian Ekspres upheld its Bahasa Malaysia standard with Siti Kazalina Kamaludin winning the top prize in the Arts & Culture category for 'War Cry', a celebration of Sabah and Sarawak's traditional heritage.
