MLC 2025: Aaron Jones and Shimron Hetmyer keep Seattle Orcas in the playoffs race; push Los Angeles Knight Riders to the bottom
The Seattle Orcas continued their resurgence in Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025, chasing down yet another 200-plus target to beat the Los Angeles Knight Riders by five wickets. This marked their second consecutive victory in the tournament.
Batting first after being asked to set a target, the Knight Riders got off to a sluggish start, with the ball gripping in the surface and making timing difficult. Andre Fletcher managed to find occasional boundaries to maintain some momentum during the powerplay. Harmeet Singh bowled three tidy overs upfront and was eventually rewarded when Fletcher picked out long-off.

In a surprising move,
Andre Russell
came in at No. 3 and initially played cautiously, especially against spin, while LAKR lost two quick wickets to slump to 48/3.
Russell then joined forces with Saif Badar to rebuild, and later Rovman Powell arrived to accelerate the innings. Badar was eventually dismissed for 41, caught by Klaasen off Salamkheil, but partnerships between Russell-Badar and Russell-Powell powered LAKR past 200. Russell notched up his first fifty of the season and stayed unbeaten on 65 from 39 balls, while Powell's quickfire 43* off 21 ensured they finished on 202/4.

Chasing 203, Seattle lost opener Josh Brown on the second ball, but
Aaron Jones
and Shayan Jahangir stitched together a brilliant 119-run stand for the second wicket. They took calculated risks to keep the scoreboard ticking. Jones brought up his maiden MLC fifty before falling to Schalkwyk off Holder for 73 (38 balls, 10 fours, 2 sixes).

carried on his blistering form from the previous match, hammering six sixes and four boundaries in a 26-ball 64* to guide Seattle home comfortably. Kyle Mayers played a steady supporting hand with 9 off 12.
Among LAKR's bowlers, Jason Holder impressed with 2 wickets, while Tanveer Sangha also claimed 2/39.
Andre Russell picked up one wicket for 29 in his four-over spell.

New Zealand Name Michael Bracewell As Replacement For Glenn Phillips For 1st Test vs Zimbabwe
New Zealand all-rounder Michael Bracewell has been named as the replacement for injured Glenn Phillips in their first Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, scheduled to begin on July 30. Bracewell was initially unavailable for the series due to his commitments with The Hundred. He was named in the squad for the first Test after his schedule allowed him to be available for the series opener. Bracewell is in Zimbabwe as part of New Zealand's T20I tri-series. Phillips was ruled out of the Tri-series and the two Tests after he suffered a right groin injury during the final of the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025 earlier this month. After the first Test, Bracewell will leave Zimbabwe and join the Southern Brave ahead of their first game. "Glenn's injury provided a gap in the Test squad, and Michael is the closest like-for-like replacement. Michael's experience and skillset will be a great asset and allows us to keep the same balance of the team," Blackcaps head coach Rob Walter said in a statement released by New Zealand Cricket. "Given he's here with the T20 squad and his availability aligned for the first Test, we're using the opportunity to include him in the squad. We'll get through the first Test and then we'll make a decision whether we'll replace him for the second Test," he concluded. After Phillips was confirmed to miss New Zealand's ongoing tour of Zimbabwe, Walter reflected on the impact of his absence and had said, "It's obviously disappointing to lose someone of Glenn's calibre. Much like Finn (Allen), we really feel for Glenn and that he misses out on this series. "We know he was eager to get out on the field for the Black Caps, and unfortunately, he won't be able to do that for this series. We know he'll work hard to get himself back onto the park, and I look forward to when that happens," Walter added.
