MLC 2025: Andries Gous and Glenn Maxwell power Washington Freedom to six-wicket win over MI New York; finish top two

Andries Gous of Washington Freedom play a shot during match 29 of the Cognizant Major League Cricket season 3 between Washington Freedom and MI New Yorkheld at the Broward County Stadium, Florida, United States of America (USA). (Sportzpics) A composed chase led by Andries Gous and an excellent spell from Glenn Maxwell powered Washington Freedom to a six-wicket win over MI New York, sealing a top-two finish and a berth in Qualifier 1 of the 2025 Major League Cricket (MLC). Despite the defeat, MI New York also advanced to the playoffs, their vastly superior Net Run Rate keeping them ahead of the Seattle Orcas. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! After choosing to bat in a rain-affected match that was reduced to 18 overs per side, MI New York's reshuffled lineup struggled for fluency. Monank Patel fell early, and Nicholas Pooran's quickfire start — including two crisp boundaries — ended abruptly. First, Glenn Maxwell struck twice in a burst, and Glenn Phillips followed suit with a double-wicket over of his own. The pitch assisted spin with turn and variable bounce, and Washington's attack used it to full effect. Glenn Maxwell takes his third wicket of the game, dismissing Sharad Lumba lbw for a golden duck 🦆 — Cognizant Major League Cricket (@MLCricket) July 6, 2025 Amid the collapse, debutant Kunwarjeet Singh impressed with a composed 33 on his T20 debut, showcasing maturity against spin. But once he fell to Phillips, the innings lost steam. Sunny Patel and Heath Richards added some lower-order resistance, guiding MI New York past 100 to finish on 112/8. Maxwell returned figures of 3/29, while Phillips was tidy and incisive with 2/4 in his only over. Washington's chase began with the early loss of Mitch Owen, and Rachin Ravindra's departure followed soon after. But Mark Chapman's brisk 27 off 18 balls settled nerves. Though he and Maxwell fell in quick succession, Gous took command, striking three boundaries in the 14th over to break the back of the chase. He remained unbeaten on 46 from 34 balls, calmly steering his team home with 18 balls to spare. Major League Cricket 2025 Explained: Teams, Schedule & Where to Watch For Washington, the win ensured a top-two finish and a direct path to Qualifier 1 — a reward for consistent performances throughout the season. MI New York, meanwhile, completed the league stage in fourth place, their playoff hopes never really threatened due to a healthy NRR cushion over the Orcas. Their selection experiment may not have earned them a win, but it offered valuable exposure to help strengthen the bench heading into the playoff games. MLC 2025: All-round Kieron Pollard helps MI New York beat LAKR by 6 runs; stay in hunt for playoffs

Kieron Pollard of MI New York is congratulated for getting the wicket of Sherfane Rutherford of Los Angeles Knight Riders during match 27 of the Cognizant Major League Cricket season 3 between MI New York and LA Knight Riders held at the Broward County Stadium, Florida, United States of America (USA). (SPortzpics) Kieron Pollard 's half-century and game-changing penultimate over helped MI New York (MINY) beat Los Angeles Knight Riders (LAKR) by six runs in the ongoing Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025. The loss effectively eliminated LAKR's playoff contention, while MINY stayed in the hunt. In a match where momentum swung wildly at extremities, LAKR's inability to close out the chase proved costly. Jason Holder's men fell short despite needing just 29 off the last three overs with eight wickets in hand. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The slow pitch also challenged MI NY early. The men in blue suffered a shaky start, losing their top order in quick succession during the powerplay. Shadley van Schalkwyk provided key breakthroughs, removing Quinton de Kock and Tajinder Singh, while Corne Dry dismissed the tournament's leading run-scorer, Monank Patel, thanks to a stunning catch in the outfield by Saif Badar. Skipper Nicholas Pooran attempted to steady the innings with a cautious 30 off 24 balls before being dismissed via a juggling catch behind the stumps by Unmukt Chand off Sunil Narine. Michael Bracewell followed shortly after, holing out to Holder at long-on as Dry's clever change of pace paid off again. With half the side gone and the scoreboard barely keeping pace with the overs, Pollard began his assault in the 17th over, launching Andre Russell for back-to-back sixes. After a quiet over from Holder, Pollard went again—dispatching van Schalkwyk for two more sixes before falling for a vital 50 off 36, caught by Holder, whose brilliant final over helped restrict MINY to a competitive total of 142/9. In reply, LAKR lost their dangerous opener Andre Fletcher early in the second over, before Unmukt Chand and Alex Hales began to rebuild. Hales' lean run this season continued, making a labored 21 off 26, while Chand played anchor with a slow but steady knock as the Knight Riders chased their first win. MLC 2025: Unmukt Chand's road to redemption in America But MI New York's varied bowling attack kept things tight in the middle overs. Chand and Sherfane Rutherford struggled to find boundaries, and though LAKR were still in control needing just 29 off the last 18 balls, Pollard's tight penultimate over—conceding only 5 runs and claiming Rutherford's wicket—tilted the game dramatically. With 16 needed off the final over, LA Knight Riders made a debatable call to retire Chand and send in skipper Holder. But Ehsan Adil held his nerve brilliantly, sealing a 6-run win that knocked LA Knight Riders out of the tournament. Brief Scores MINY: 142/9 in 20 overs (Kieron Pollard 50, Nicholas Pooran 30; Shadley van Schalkwyk 3/24, Corne Dry 2/25, Jason Holder 2/28) LAKR: 136/4 in 20 overs (Unmukt Chand 59, Sherfane Rutherford 29, Alex Hales 21; Nosthush Kenjige 1/14, Kieron Pollard 1/12) For real-time updates, scores, and highlights, follow our live coverage of the India vs England Test match here. MLC 2025: Aaron Jones and Shimron Hetmyer keep Seattle Orcas in the playoffs race; push Los Angeles Knight Riders to the bottom

Shimron Hetmyer of Seattle Orcas is congratulated by Kyle Mayers of Seattle Orcas for reaching his fifty during match 20 of the Cognizant Major League Cricket season 3 between LA Knight Riders and Seattle Orcas held at the Grand Prairie cricket stadium, Grand Prairie, United States of America (USA). (Sportzpics) The Seattle Orcas continued their resurgence in Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025, chasing down yet another 200-plus target to beat the Los Angeles Knight Riders by five wickets. This marked their second consecutive victory in the tournament. Batting first after being asked to set a target, the Knight Riders got off to a sluggish start, with the ball gripping in the surface and making timing difficult. Andre Fletcher managed to find occasional boundaries to maintain some momentum during the powerplay. Harmeet Singh bowled three tidy overs upfront and was eventually rewarded when Fletcher picked out long-off. Shimron Hetmyer takes Stake Player of the Match for the second night in a row ‼️ @StakeIND x @stakenewsindia — Cognizant Major League Cricket (@MLCricket) June 29, 2025 In a surprising move, Andre Russell came in at No. 3 and initially played cautiously, especially against spin, while LAKR lost two quick wickets to slump to 48/3. Russell then joined forces with Saif Badar to rebuild, and later Rovman Powell arrived to accelerate the innings. Badar was eventually dismissed for 41, caught by Klaasen off Salamkheil, but partnerships between Russell-Badar and Russell-Powell powered LAKR past 200. Russell notched up his first fifty of the season and stayed unbeaten on 65 from 39 balls, while Powell's quickfire 43* off 21 ensured they finished on 202/4. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Bitcoin vs Gold: Which Is the Better Investment for the Next 1–3 Years? Chasing 203, Seattle lost opener Josh Brown on the second ball, but Aaron Jones and Shayan Jahangir stitched together a brilliant 119-run stand for the second wicket. They took calculated risks to keep the scoreboard ticking. Jones brought up his maiden MLC fifty before falling to Schalkwyk off Holder for 73 (38 balls, 10 fours, 2 sixes). Major League Cricket 2025 Explained: Teams, Schedule & Where to Watch The Orcas then suffered a mini-collapse, losing Jahangir, Klaasen, and Sikandar Raza in quick succession. MLC 2025: Mitchell Owen stars in Washington Freedom's win, ends San Francisco Unicorns' unbeaten streak

Mitchell Owen of Washington Freedom celebrates getting the wicket of Brody Couch of San Francisco Unicorns during match 19 of the Cognizant Major League Cricket season 3 between Washington Freedom and San Francisco Unicorns held at the Grand Prairie cricket stadium, Grand Prairie, United States of America (USA). (Sportzpics) The San Francisco Unicorns' unbeaten streak in MLC 2025 finally came to an end, though they remain at the top of the points table, now holding their position only on the basis of a superior net run rate. Mitchell Owen's sensational five-wicket haul led Washington Freedom to a 12-run victory in Dallas on Saturday. Unicorns skipper Matthew Short continued his strong form with the bat as his side chased a modest target of 170—a score that looked manageable given recent high-scoring games. Despite little support from Finn Allen and Jake Fraser-McGurk, Unicorns reached 52 for 1 during the powerplay. Short eventually found some backing from Sanjay Krishnamurthi, but after Short fell in the 11th over for a commanding 67—out of the 97 total—the chase quickly unraveled. With only 73 required, the Unicorns' middle order appeared to be in control. That was when Owen took charge with the ball. He removed Short in his first over and then dismissed Hassan Khan and Romario Shepherd in successive deliveries soon after. Assisted by wickets from Jack Edwards and Ian Holland, the Unicorns collapsed to 113 for 7 by the 16th over. Owen returned in the 19th over to clean up tailenders Haris Rauf and Brody Couch, finishing with remarkable figures of 5 for 17. With 27 needed off the final over, Jahmar Hamilton fought valiantly with an unbeaten 31 from 18 balls, but Saurabh Netravalkar held his nerve, conceding only 14 runs to seal the win. Earlier, after choosing to bat, Freedom were in deep trouble at 13 for 3 inside three overs, courtesy of a fiery opening burst from Xavier Bartlett, who removed Owen (first ball), Rachin Ravindra, and Andries Gous. Glenn Maxwell fell cheaply, but Jack Edwards and Glenn Phillips steadied things with a 71-run stand off 64 balls. Phillips then shifted gears during a 31-run partnership in just 12 deliveries with Obus Pienaar. After Phillips departed for a 39-ball 58, Pienaar finished with an unbeaten 37 off 16 balls alongside Mukhtar Ahmed. Major League Cricket 2025 Explained: Teams, Schedule & Where to Watch Both teams now share six wins in seven matches, though the Unicorns boast a commanding net run rate advantage—2.016 compared to Washington's 0.603. Brief Scores Washington Freedom: 169/6 in 20 overs (Glenn Phillips 58, Jack Edwards 42, Obus Pienaar 30*; Xavier Bartlett 32/4, Romario Shepherd 28/1) San Francisco Unicorns: 157/9 in 20 overs (Matthew Short 67, Jahmar Hamilton 31*, Sanjay Krishnamurthi 24; Mitchell Owen 17/5, Ian Holland 23/1, Amila Aponso 23/1) Game On Season 1 continues with Mirabai Chanu's inspiring story.
